Good morning. It’s Monday, November 6, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
In a new deal brought to us by the letters “S,” … New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. has inked a new four-year multi-million dollar deal with Sesame Workshop to be a sponsor (the “S”) in the US for both Sesame Street and Plaza Sésamo. Additionally, New Balance will serve as the exclusive national sponsor of Sesame Street Presents: The Body, an interactive touring exhibit, for 2007-1010. The TV sponsorship, which begins this month and runs through December 2007, launches with a New Balance Kids (:15) bi-lingual spot (English/Spanish) that will air at the top and bottom of the hour of the 1-hr series on PBS stations. Also included under the partnership, New Balance will be integrated into several online elements, including on sesamestreet.com, and print campaigns that will run in Sesame Street magazine and Sesame Street newsletters. New Balance will also be integrated into areas of Sesame Street Presents: The Body, which is part of Sesame Workshop’s Healthy Habits/Habitos Saludables para Toda La Vida initiative, and New Balance will also work with Ryan Partnership to mesh the sponsorship into activities at select retailers. A Spanish-language version of Sesame Street, Plaza Sésamo’s is co-produced by Sesame Workshop and Mexico’s Televisa, and airs in select PBS markets.
The BBC unveiled plans on Friday to revamp its kid-centric digital channels CBeebies and CBBC, the preschool (2-5) and K6-12 targeted respective channels, including new on-air looks for both and a shift audience. CBeebies, which according to its Creative Director Michael Carrington has been losing its four to five year old viewers, specifically boys, will now focus its programming on kids up to six years old with “fewer, bigger and better” shows. Those shows include In the Night Garden, from Ragdoll Entertainment, Tommy Zoom and a younger version of Jackanory amongst other shows. Meanwhile over at CBBC, Creative Director Anne Gilchrist aim is to produce more “ambitious programming” that includes shows like the spy series MI High, the newly redone CGI version of Jackanory and an epic style drama The Roman Mysteries that stars Simon Callow.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Sam Elliot has been cast in the New Line Cinema movie adaptation of author Philip Pullman’s book The Golden Compass, the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy. Elliot, who is playing Lee Scoresby, joins cast members including Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig and Eva Green. The Golden Compass is set for release just one year from now on November 16, 2007. Sorry, to me and other of my general age (22 ahem) Sam will always be Rick from the movie Lifeguard … so very pathetic, I know.
Teen actress Amanda Bynes will star in the movie Sydney White and the Seven Dorks, per Production Weekly. Joe Nussbaum will direct the movie that is set to begin filming at the top of 2007 in Florida. The movie follows college freshman sorority and fraternity rush, specifically one freshman who arrives on campus and challenges the school’s reigning fairest of them all, including stealing her boyfriend.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Spidey fans should plan to be home with their TV tuned to this week’s episode of MTV’s Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Duel this Thursday, November 9 at 10-10:30p, or program their DVRs, if they want to catch the premiere of Columbia Pictures’ new trailer for Spider-Man 3, according to the website Superhero Hype. The new trailer for Spider-Man 3 is set to run in movie theaters ahead of Casino Royale, also a Columbia movie, beginning November 17. Spider-Man 3 is slated to open May 4, 2007.
G4 debuts a new season of its series Cheat, beginning today at 4p. Hosted by Kristin Holt, provides gamers with strategies, tips and codes, for a range of game titles. Additional exclusive content videos and podcasts can be found at http://www.g4tv.com/cheat , where there is also an archive of game hints/cheats. New episodes of Cheat will continue to roll out weekdays at 4p. The series will feature a lot of games that are rated E (Everyone), E +10 (Everyone 10 yrs+), T (Teen 13+) as well as games for mature and adult only audiences.
Correction : The N will begin rolling out the Degrassi Minis, its short-form broadband series, beginning November 17 (corrected date). The first of the Degrassi Minis will be available after the final episode of Degrassi: The Next Generation (the last of the mid-season group of episodes from season six) runs on the network on Friday, November 17 at 8p.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Vivendi Universal Games will release the Eragon video game, based on Fox’s upcoming movie version of Christopher Paolini’s fantasy/adventure novel, for Xbox 360 on November 16. Published by Sierra Entertainment, a unit of VU Games, and developed by Stormfront Studios, a demo of the game was released last week on Xbox Live Marketplace. Versions of the Eragon title will also be released at the same time for PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC, PSP, DS and Game Boy Advance. The movie will be released nationwide next month on December 15.
Habbo will launch Habbo Home, a new feature that lets its members design and customize their personal pages, on November 27. To support the debut of Habbo Home celebrities including Nelly Furtado, Tony Hawk, New Found Glory, Ciara, Bowling for Soup, Chingy, Scream Tour, and Lady Sovereign will be among the first to launch pages. The teen-targeted social network will also include enhanced online safety features for members on Habbo Home pages.
