11/03/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 3, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Bravo: Inside the Actor’s Studio at 8p; First Class All the Way at 9p

Tonight’s Finale:
TNT: Raising the Bar at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Wondering what the two Presidential candidates will be doing tonight on the eve of the election? Both will “appear” in separate pre-taped interviews on ESPN during halftime of Monday Night Football. Chris Berman will anchor the interviews, conducted earlier today, airing via satellite at approximately 1015p during the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Washington Redskins game.

ABC requested seven new episodes of comedy series Samantha Who? starring Christina Applegate. This order takes the total number of episodes this season to 20. Normally, a full-season order consists of 22 episodes, however ABC indicated it has enough episodes in the pipeline from other sitcoms, such as Scrubs and According to Jim and does not need as many episodes of Samantha Who?.

NBC approved nine additional episodes of its new comedy Kath & Kim, giving it a full-season order. To date, Kath & Kim, starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair has averaged a 2.6/6 among A18-49 and 6.0 million viewers.

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports Media Rights Capital is pulling the plug on its Sunday night shows – Valentine and Easy Money.  Last week we heard these shows had been put on hiatus while more scripts were being written, and that this hiatus was a planned and scheduled move.  Today, DHD is reporting this has now become a permanent hiatus.   MRC programs Sunday nights on The CW this season, and to continue to fill these two slots, will clearly have to come up with two new shows toot sweet.

Nielsen released findings from its new TV/Internet Convergence Panel, a service tracking both television and online usage in the same household. The results point to television viewing and online video streaming sync up as complementary activities. The panel found the heaviest users of the web also watch the most television, and conversely the lowest consumers of the internet watch the least amount of TV. The convergence panel consisted of 3,000 people in 1,000 households and additional information gleaned includes:

  • The top one-fifth of online users spent 250+ minutes per day watching TV, while people who do not use the internet at all spent 220 minutes watching TV per day.
  • 31% of in-home internet usage happens while watching TV and 4% of TV viewing happens while the user is online.
  • Nearly 50% of the panelists had viewed some streaming video content online and the most active demos were Female Teens at 82%; Male Teens at 64%; Men 18-34 at 57%; and Men 35-54 at 55%.
  • Almost 60% of the panelists and more than 80% of people watching TV and using the internet that month did so simultaneously. Teens and A35-54 tend to do more simultaneous TV/internet usage.

Finally, the case surrounding the “fleeting expletives” involving FOX vs. FCC is going to the Supreme Court, reports Variety. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments from both sides tomorrow morning. A ruling in favor of FOX could drastically reduce the FCC’s rights to monitor the airwaves for indecent content. On the opposite side, if the Court finds for the FCC, it could make appealing future indecency fines next to impossible for broadcasters.

Bluestreak, a marketing technology company and a unit of Aegis Media, introduces Bluestreak 5.0 a new advertising platform created to deliver, measure, de-duplicate and report anonymous consumer marketing results across multiple digital media outlets. The goal of Bluestreak 5.0 is to provide a higher level of data results and client support to upgrade digital marketing campaign performance, decrease media costs and increase value for advertisers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX is moving forward on a fifth season of American Dad. The show’s executive producers, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, have made separate new overall deals with 20th Century Fox Television allowing both to work independent of each other. Previously, the duo worked as writing partners with their own production company Underdog Productions and both confirmed they will continue working as executive producers on American Dad. Production for season four of American Dad will conclude soon and scripts for season five are in the works.

USA Network initiated production for a second season of In Plain Sight, the drama starring Mary McCormack about the Federal Witness Protection Program. Each of the 16 new episodes will be shot on location in and near Albuquerque, NM and Universal Cable Productions produces with show creator David Maples and Paul Stupin serving as executive producers.

Elsewhere at USA Network, the pilot project Operating Instructions has had the cast contingency on it lifting with the signing of Emily Rose in the lead role. The project is about a surgeon who has just completed her tour of duty in the military, and returns home to work in a military hospital.  The project is from Conaco Prods and Universal Cable Productions.

TNT announced plans to have at least seven 60m original dramas for 2009 and to spread first-run shows across three nights per week, cites Variety. Three established dramas, The Closer, Saving Grace and the recent pick-up of Raising the Bar are all set for next year. Leverage will open December 7 with Timothy Hutton starring as a modern-day Robin Hood, and in January, TNT will premiere Trust Me, an advertising agency drama set in Chicago with Eric McCormack and Tom Cavanagh in the leads. TNT also has other pilots in development:

  • Bunker Hill – starring Donnie Wahlberg as a Boston DEA agent
  • Time Heals – the hospital drama starring Jada Pinkett Smith
  • Night and Day – a drama about the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
  • Men of a Certain Age – the 60m comedy starring and produced by Ray Romano
  • Spinoff to The Closer – in development by writer/producer James Duff
  • Wedding Day – reality project from Mark Burnett

NBC tapped Bradley Whitford to star and produce a single-camera comedy pilot called Off Duty produced by Universal Media Studios, per THR. The buddy comedy also stars Romany Malco about a respected police detective on his way down played by Whitford who takes on a new partner (Malco) on his way up. Scot Armstrong and Ravi Nandan will executive produce with Jason Mantzoukas as writer/co-executive producer.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The FCC is receiving last minute pressure to suspend or delay to big votes scheduled for Tuesday. Despite pressure from broadcasters, the FCC appears to ready to rule on whether to allow unlicensed use of the “white space” – the unused portion of the public airwaves not allocated to TV broadcasters – when television goes digital in February. However another commission vote scheduled for Tuesday may in fact be tabled, according to the WSJ. This proposal would change the intercarrier compensation rules that specify how telecom providers pay each other to exchange voice and data communications traffic between systems. Consumer groups, rural phone carriers, congressional leaders and voices within the FCC are pushing for more public debate on the issue. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Sony may team with Paramount to provide financing for the Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson 3D motion capture CG movie series Tintin, based on the Tintin comics created by Belgium’s Herge, according the New York Times.  Spielberg and Jackson will each direct a movie in the series.  Tintin was dropped in September from Universal‘s slate, with the studio saying that the film project was “too risky.”  According to the report the main issue for Universal had been that Spielberg and Jackson had wanted a third of the movie’s gross receipts, which is not an easy give to being with, and add to that a troubled economy is not an easy give, and, well, no deal.  If the deal with Sony and Paramount goes forward, the first film in the series could be back underway, directed by Spielberg (who has already shot some of the picture), before years end for release in 2010, with Paramount distributing the Tintin movies across North America and select English-speaking territories, and Sony taking distribution rights for a range of international regions, including Europe and Latin America.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Japan’s Avex, a movie/talent/music company, acquired The World That They Live In, a new drama series from Korea’s YEG production house for $2.4 million.  A debut date has not yet been named. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
