Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

ABC is shifting two of its kid/family-targeted holiday specials by a week due to President Obama’s address that is now scheduled for Tuesday, December 1 at 8p.  ABC will now air A Charlie Brown Christmas (1×30) and premiere its new animated special Disney Prep & Landing (1×30) on Tuesday December 8, at 8 and 8:30p respectively.

  • Executive produced by John Lasseter, Prep & Landing is ABC’s first special produced by Disney Animation Studio. The holiday special follows an elite high tech unit of elves, which is responsible for making sure that homes are ready for Santa’s arrival.  A small group of these elves, one passed over for a promotion and an enthusiastic rookie and one other, team to guide Santa and his reindeer through a dangerous storm. The voiceover cast includes Dave Foley, Sarah Chalke, and Derek Richardson
  • Created by Charles M. Schulz, the holiday-themed Peanuts special, A Charlie Brown Christmas, made its premiere in 1965, with the digitally re-mastered special making its debut on ABC in December 2001.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) has reportedly jointed the cast of Marvel Studios‘ feature film Thor, per Variety.  Dennings takes on the role of Darcy in the movie, which will be directed by Kenneth Branagh.  Set for release on May 20, 2011, the Thor cast already includes Anthony Hopkins, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids and Scholastic Media will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day National Day of Service with Be Big with Clifford: Ten Days, Ten Ways, beginning Monday, January 18, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  The on-air event will feature ten days of favorite Clifford episodes focusing on his ten big ideas and showcasing social and character-building life lessons.  Additionally, the programming will be supported by on-air promotions and new online content at pbskids.org/Clifford and for parents and teachers at pbsparents.org/Clifford .  By the way, Clifford’s big Ideas are share, help others, be kind, be responsible, play fair, be a good friend, believe in yourself, respect others, work together and be truthful.  The Clifford series celebrates its 10th anniversary on PBS Kids in 2010.

Boomerang is celebrating the holidays with a month-long Christmas Party this December.  The network will feature two-hours of holiday specials every Saturday and Sunday at 4p, culminating in a marathon of Christmas classics beginning Christmas Eve at 9a and ending with a 90-minute block of MGM shorts from the 1930s and 40s on Christmas Day.  Special set to air during December include The Town That Santa Forgot, The Powerpuff Girls Twas the Flight Before Christmas, A Johnny Bravo Christmas, Yogi’s First Christmas, Casper’s First Christmas, A Flintstones Christmas Carol and specials featuring Popeye the Sailor, Papa Smurf and the Jetsons.

RDF Rights (RDFR) heads to ATF having inked a raft of new broadcast deals in Asia

  • In Thailand: broadcaster PBS picks up season one and two of the CBeebies series Big Barn Farm, as well as all three series of the preschool-aimed arts and crafts series Mister Maker; True Spark acquires season 5 of the ITV1 make-and-do show Finger Tips and both series 1 and 2 of Yo Gabba Gabba!, which is produced by the Magic Store and Wildbrain for Nickelodeon.
  • Yo Yo TV (Taiwan) picks up season 5 of Finger Tips along with re-licensing seasons 1-4.
  • In Singapore, Mediacorp acquires programming for its Okto Channel, including seasons 1 and 2 of Mister Maker, seasons 4-6 of Brilliant Creatures, seasons 3 and 4 of Finger Tips (series 3 and 4), and seasons 1 and 2 of Yo Gabba Gabba! and Tricky TV which broadcast on ITV (UK).
  • ATV (Hong Kong) takes Yo Gabba Gabba! seasons 1 and 2, and seasons 4 and 5 of Finger Tips.  TVB acquires series 2 of the BBC adventure game show for kids, Escape from Scorpion Island and series 1 of Big Barn Farm.
  • NTV7 (Malaysia) acquires the first two seasons of Mister Maker and Yo Gabba Gabba!

MARKETING/LICENSING

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products signs new licensing deals for MTV Networks International‘s Nickelodeon properties in France, the Nordic region and Israel:

  • NVCP France inks a new deal with local toy company, Jemini, to produce SpongeBob SquarePants branded plush and car accessories.  Launching in December, the products will be available from all mass market retail outlets as well as specialty shops.
  • NVCP brokers a sub-license two-year deal between Denmark’s KE Mathiasen Group, and global partner, Take Two.  Under the pact KE Mathiasen Group local gaming subsidiary launch Dora the Explorer branded games, including Dora Saves the Snow Princess, for Nintendo DS across Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
  • NVCP is partnering with one of Israel-based board game producer, Creative Toys Ltd, in a two-year deal that will see the launch of a line of SpongeBob SquarePants branded board games aimed at K4-10 beginning this holiday season.

Disney Media Sales and Marketing and Xbox 360 have teamed with the Jonas Brothers to star in a national campaign for Xbox 360 called It’s More Fun Time.  The campaign can be seen across multiple Disney platforms including Disney Channel, Disney XD, ABC Kids, Disney Online and Family.com’s Get Plugged In video portal.  The campaign also includes the It’s More Fun Time with the Jonas Brothers sweepstakes for K8+, which can be entered at Disney.com/MoreFunTime ( www.disney.com/morefuntime) or by texting Xbox to Disney (347639).  In conjunction with this campaign Xbox Live members will receive a single episode of the series Jonas free to view on Xbox Live Zune Marketplace through December 31, 2009.

Hachette Collections SNC signs on as a new publishing licensee for Dinosaur King, a 4Kids Entertainment International animated and trading card game brand.  Under the deal Hachette will launch the Dinosaur king partworks collection in France, UK, Eire, Australia/New Zealand, South Africa, Malta, Spain, Portugal, GAS, Italy, Greece, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, and Benelux.  Hachette joins a number of other Dinosaur King publishing licensees: Harper Collins is releasing a range of titles in the UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand; Artpeople A/S is set to launch storybooks in Denmark, Sweden and Norway; Tournon publishes an official Dino King magazine in France and are set to release an array of books next year, and Blue Ocean and Edizioni Playpress are also on board in Germany and Italy respectively.

Carson-Dellosa Publishing is launching a new teacher online resource specifically for author/illustrator Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar at www.carsondellosa.com/ericcarle.  The website provides teachers with a range of free ideas, including lesson plans, craft ideas, tools and printable classroom materials, and bulletin board display ideas all based around The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Q&A opportunities with Carle.  To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and the launch of the website, Carson-Dellosa partners with Chorion, which is the licensing representative for The World of Eric Carle brand, to offer a sweepstakes based on the property for teachers and their classrooms.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

KidsCo names Anna Pak as its Commercial Director for Western Europe.  Pak will be responsible for growing the channel’s presence in established KidsCo regions and closing carriage deals on various territories.  Pak, who will relocate from Paris to London, most recently was regional head of distribution for Euronews.

Funimation Entertainment, a subsidiary of Navarre Corporation, appoints Chris Moujaes as Director/Original Animation.  As part of Funimation’s new co-production initiative, Moujaes will focus his efforts on the acquisition and development of a slate of original anime titles based on intellectual properties.  An animation industry veteran, Moujaes most recently served as President and Chief Creative Officer for Texas-based animation studio Boomstar Inc.
