Power your business with the leader in
original movie production.

Source:  Nielsen Galaxy Explorer 1/1 – 9/30/07 number of original movie premieres for all ad-supported cable networks (tied with Sci Fi).  Further qualifications available upon request.

Good Morning.  It’s Monday, November 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

As the writers’ strike continues, there’s a new bent to it you should be aware of.  CBS News and ABC News writers for both television and radio, are also members of the WGA East, and both have been working without a contract since 2005. Later on this week, Guild members will come together to vote to authorize a strike, which gives their union the authorization to call a strike if they choose too.  The Guild represents approximately 700 news writers at the two networks.  It should be noted that not all news writers are members of the WGA, but rather are represented by the NABET, both of which negotiate their deals separately with each network. And there are still others who are not members of any union, and may have instead personal services contracts with the networks.

Tonight’s Premieres:
IFC: Darkon at 9p
Tonight’s Finales:
BBC America: Top Gear at 8p
USA Network: Dr. Steve-o at 1105p

NATPE ’08 – THE U.S. Multiplatform Video Marketplace – Jan28-31 – SPECIAL RATE Code: CYN08

The WGA East issued a statement late Friday displeased with Ellen DeGeneres for apparently violating strike rules after staying out for the strike for just one day. The WGAE said they are “extremely disappointed to see that Ellen has chosen not to stand with writers during the strike.” Since Ellen has performed comedy on her show since the strike began, the WGAE is calling it “struck work” which means she is violating strike rules. The WGAE also said they will communicate their disappointment to her in person if she continues with plans of shooting upcoming shows in New York on November 19 and 20 or if she pre-tapes any segments on location.

AFTRA response to WGA East statement: “As you know, AFTRA members such as Ms. DeGeneres who are working under the AFTRA Network TV Code are legally required by the no-strike clause of that contract to report to work and perform their AFTRA-covered responsibilities. Ms. DeGeneres, along with thousands of entertainment-industry workers represented by AFTRA and other unions who are bound by similar no-strike clauses, are also reporting to work as legally required.”

Meanwhile, NBC announced to its non-writing staff of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that it will be laid off at the end of this week, because the show itself has shut down since the writers strike, according to Broadcasting & Cable. Since Jay Leno is refusing to cross the picket line, the show may return November 19 with guest hosts, so the nonwriter jobs can be salvaged. A similar announcement was made by NBC to staff at Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Many New York Theaters were dark this weekend as stagehands from the Local One union went on strike against the League of American Theatres and Producers. Shows from Wicked to The Phantom of the Opera to the holiday Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical were all closed. Both sides have been in heated negotiations for more than three months over work rules and staffing requirements pertaining to loading and setting up a show. According to reports, it’s considered unlikely a settlement will be reached soon.

Laila Ali will co-host NBC’s reinvented American Gladiators competition series together with Hulk Hogan. The show will be introduced midseason in primetime and is produced by MGM Television and Reveille.

BBC America will return with the time travel detective series Life on Mars about detective Sam Tyler surviving a near-fatal car crash and waking up decades in time earlier, for a second and final season starting December 11 at 8p with a two-hour premiere. According to BBC America, David E. Kelley is developing a U.S. pilot based on this storyline for ABC.

CBS Television Distribution has sold The Doctors, the new syndicated spinoff series from Dr. Phil in 75% of the U.S., for a fall 2008 debut. The show will appear now in all of the Top 25 markets.

In other syndication news, Twentieth Television, Inc. is launching Boston Legal into syndication and has sold the ABC drama in 46 markets so far, or 50% of the U.S. Stations carrying the show are from station groups including ABC O&O’s, NBC O&O’s, Scripps, Sunbeam, Allbriton, Meredith and Cox.

Litton Entertainment signed many top market stations to air Storm Stories for a fall 2008 launch. The local stations will be able to customized Storm Stories using their own Chief Meteorologists, as well as live local news and weather updates as an option available for upgraded local advertising sponsorships. Stations from the following station groups are represented: CBS, ABC, Gannett, Cox, Weigel, Media General, Clear Channel, Tribune and Scripps.

Just thinking out loud: Can you imagine if the writers weren’t on strike, what Conan’s monologue would be like following the arrest of his stalker?

Fox has cast Michael Rispoli and Romy Rosemont in its pilot project The Oaks from 20th Fox Century Television, reports THR. The story follows a house thru several decades, and the families that have lived in it.  Production is scheduled to begin later on this month.

Also from 20th Century Fox TV – pilot drama project Under for A&E has cast its lead with Henry Thomas. This story follows a young wiseguy who rats out his colleagues, enters the witness protection program, only to become a cop with the NYPD, per THR.   Signed on to direct the pilot is Charles S.
