Cynopsis: Kids!

11/12/07

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 12, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

Vuze, the online entertainment platform, has inked a content deal with PBS to provide selected PBS programming on a download-to-own basis.  Vuze is now offering PBS programs including PBS Kids programs such as Caillou and Teletubbies, as well as History Detectives, NOVA, and Scientific American Frontiers, as well as programming from selected local PBS stations.  This deal comes just as PBS enters into a similar deal with BitTorrent.

NATPE ’08 – THE U.S. Multiplatform Video Marketplace – Jan28-31 – SPECIAL RATE Code: CYN08

Once there was just the “Me” generation, now there is the “Mii” generation  you know the customizable cartoon-like Nintendo Wii characters (like avatars).  Well, know what I’m talking about or not, yesterday Nintendo launched the Check Mii Out Channel, where folks can show-off their Mii creations and vote on those showcased there.  Wii users, with units connected to the internet, can download the free Mii channel from WiiWare section of the Wii Shop Channel.  Some of the celebrity Mii characters that I’ve seen in the past and over the weekend are pretty funny, and oddly accurate.

Atari releases the new videogame Asterix at the Olympic Games for PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, Wii and PC in Europe.  Based on the upcoming live-action Asterix movie of the same name, the game features live-action elements from the movie and CG animated content as well.  Developed by Etranges Libellules, in collaboration with Asterix licensor Les Editions Albert Rene and the movie production company La Petite Reine, both the movie and game are, of course, based on the famous Asterix comics.  The Wii, PS2 and PC versions of the game features two gameplay modes, the adventure mode follows the story playing as either Asterix or Obelix, while the antique mode lets players play as any one of 12 characters and go head to head with other players (online or in-person).  The Nintendo DS game players take the role of either Asterix or Obelix through more than 120 sporting challenges to become the ultimate victor.  The movie, Asterix at the Olympic Games, is set to open in Europe in early 2008.

Correction : The new series, Dad’s In The Attic, is actually a Breakout Films, Muse Entertainment, and Summit Crescent Productions co-production produced in association with Canada’s YTV and France 2.  It was incorrectly listed here last week.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment completes a deal to acquire UK-based TT Games, which is comprised of game developer, Traveller’s Tales, as well as TT Games Publishing, which publishes the LEGO Star Wars videogames and Bionicle Heroes among others.  TT Games’ first two LEGO video games, LEGO Stars Wars: The Videogame (2005) and LEGO Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy (2006), have sold 12+ million copies worldwide, and has just released LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.  TT Games holds the worldwide rights to develop LEGO video games, including LEGO Batman and LEGO Indiana Jones, both based on the respective movie franchises.

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products and Shutterfly, Inc. have entered into a license deal to create and distribute a new line of Shutterfly products, featuring Nickelodeon characters including those from SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Diego from Go, Diego, Go, featuring.  The new personalizable products, which begin rolling out this month include, photo books, adventure books, greeting cards and photo cards

MARKETING/LICENSING

Elmo will be shaking his … everything … again this holiday season as Fisher-Price Friends releases the limited edition TMX Elmo eXtra Special Edition at retail tomorrow, November 13, 2007.  So, what is different between T.M.X. Elmo eXtra and the original T.M.X. Elmo?  Well, visually, the new Elmo laughing plush sports a gold badge, but the rest comes when kids play with Elmo and through the right sequence of movements they “unlock” a few “surprises.”  Don’t worry; Elmo eXtra comes with a card featuring a clue, in the form of a limerick.  Now, for those who find themselves challenged and/or frustrated (no, not you of course), additional hints (also limericks), will be released weekly between November 19 and December 17 at www.fisher.price.com , with all of the correct sequences to be available on the site from January 2, 2008.  Fisher-Price Friends is a unit of Fisher-Price.
