05/04/09

Good morning, it’s Monday, May 4, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Fears of online piracy’s adverse effect on Hollywood received a reality check over the weekend as X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed its way to $87 million at the box office in its debut, despite being widely available on P2P file sharing sites a full month before its release. The movie topped the first two X-Men installments (although not the third,) despite lukewarm reviews and off-the-cuff advise from Vice President Joe Biden to avoid confined and crowded spaces. Of course, the success doesn’t mean that Fox, the FBI and MPAA will give up its hunt for the leaker.

The New York Times Co. extended the deadline to at least Sunday for The Boston Globe and its unions to figure out a way to slash $20 million from its operating budget, per the AP. Negotiations between the Boston Newspaper Guild, the Globe’s largest union, and the Times Co. were scheduled to resume yesterday.

Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution is launching a newly expanded FoxFast.com today as a resource for its broadcast partners. The site combines Fox film and TV series catalogs, downloadable marketing and publicity assets and product and promo video viewing. Fox plans to utilize the site to distribute broadcast-quality digital files to clients beginning in 2010.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

The reinvigorated WhiteHouse.gov website is looking to increase its user base by tapping into social networks. The site created profiles on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, adding to existing shingles on YouTube, Flickr and iTunes. President Obama’s weekly online fireside chats have already helped spur rapid growth of video consumption on the site, according to Nielsen Online. Unique viewers of video content increased 236% month-over-month, growing from 75,000 in February to 252,000 in March 2009. Total video streams increased 350% during the same period.

Men’s online network Heavy.com is turning to Twitter to power an online dating contest beginning this morning. The third edition of the Massive Mating Game will lure in guys by posting new tweets on Heavy’s Twitter feed every time girls post a new home video. Contestants compete against each other by responding to tweeted questions.

Professional Role Playing Gaming web series Gold has figured out a way to solicit donations and keep fans interested during a production hiatus. Creator David Nett passes the hat by making a direct pitch to fans in an on-camera interview, including sneak peeks of the final two episodes of season 1 as a teaser.

In cinema ad company Screenvision struck a deal with candy manufacturer Wrigley to bring the first wave of 3-D ads to the big screen. In an exclusive partnership, Screenvision began distributing a 3-D Skittles ad to theaters exhibitor partners across the country from Friday with coverage in each of the top 10 DMAs. The 3-D ad will run for a five-week period on 762 3-D screens in 461 Screenvision represented theaters.

Facebook
is looking to harvest the popularity of its Facebook Connect sign-on service by constructing an ad network around the system, according to Alley Insider. Facebook would look to sell ads across third-party sites that use the service based on anonymous demographic and behavioral data.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The Washington Post Co. limped to a Q1 loss of $19.5 million for only the second time in its publicly traded history, weighed down by steep declines in ad revenue affecting the entire newspaper industry. Print ad revenue dropped 33% from a year ago to $74.3 million due to large decreases in classified, preprint, retail and zones advertising. Even online ad revenue - previously a source of rapid growth for the company – declined by 8%, its first drop in nearly a decade.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Nielsen
warned TV networks that its “People Meters” measurement service tends to undercount social viewing, per the WSJ. In an in-house study, Nielsen found that not everyone properly logged in to the measurement device, particularly during awards shows and sporting events when a large audience was present. Data showed that around 8% of audiences on average were undercounted.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Valleywag editor Owen Thomas is leaving parent company Gawker to become Managing Editor of NBC Bay Area, NBC Local Media’s regionally focused news site. Gawker night editor Ryan Tate will take his place as Editor at Valleywag.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

WordPress parent company Automattic launched its latest incarnation called BuddyPress, a new tool built on top of blogging network WordPress enabling members to construct their own mini social networks. Options include profile creation, grouping, customizable private messaging and real-time activity streams. Because it’s built expressly for WordPress, BuddyPress is designed to connect its bloggers in interesting ways; the “blogs” component aggregates all blogs, blog posts and comments a member makes across the entire environment, allowing members to easily track each other’s participation. Planned features include live status updates and photo albums. There are plenty of established social networks out there as well as other elegant social network creation tools (Marc Andreesen’s newly-revamped Ning probably being the best known of the lot.) But BuddyPress brings major new functionality to one of the top blogging platforms.
