CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/02/05

Good morning.  It’s Monday, May 2, 2005, the first day of the May 2005 sweep, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox has replaced Life on a Stick for the remainder of the May Sweep with Stacked, airing Wednesdays at 930p.  Last week Fox announced it would replace LOAS for the first two weeks of the sweep, and has now upped that to all four weeks.  Fox’s Wednesday night schedule now goes likes this: That 70’s Show, That 70’s Show [r], American Idol, Stacked.  Last Wednesday, Stacked held 51% of its Idol lead-in, more than LOAS had the previous week (40%).

Also, this week Fox will double run The O.C. on Thursday night to make up for the preempted ep last Thursday. And then on May 12, The Simple Life has its scheduled finale at 9p, airing two back to back original eps (originally scheduled as one finale original and one repeat).

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

A bevy of development deals signed in recent days – and one thing they all seem to have in common – seven figures.  Used to be a big deal, but it seems not so much any more, unless of course you’re not getting seven figures ….

  • 20th has signed executive producer Evan Katz to a two year deal, with an additional option for a third year;
  • Touchstone TV signed Krista Vernoff to a two year deal.  Her deal includes her being tied to the drama pilot currently under consideration for next season called Introducing Lennie Rose.  If that doesn’t work out, she’ll stay on with Grey’s Anatomy, though be upped to co-exec prod status for the second season.
  • NBC Universal Studio has signed a two year development deal with writer/producer Gardner Stern, currently exec prod of NBC’s Las Vegas.  Stern will continue with Las Vegas while development new projects for the net.
  • Regency TV and 20th have signed producer/writer Alex Reid to a two year development deal.  Reid is currently an exec prod on Fox’s Malcolm in the Middle, where he will stay, while creating new projects beginning this summer.  Malcolm has been picked up for next year by Fox.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Turner Broadcasting has picked up four films from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution for air on TBS/TNT:  The Matrix Reloaded (network premiere); A Lot Like Love, Miss Congeniality 2 and Eight Legged Freaks. The estimated price tag for the four titles is $50 million, so says Variety.

Sundance Channel has acquired the U.S. pay TV rights to three seasons of the Australian comedy series Kath & Kim, the ABC’s (Australian Broadcasting Corp) most popular program for the past three seasons.  Sundance will premiere the third season beginning this December and reprise seasons 1 and 2 in early 2006.   Produced in a reality fashion, cameras follow this fictional family of Kath (Mom), her new husband, adult daughter Kim and her husband, and her second best friend.  This family is billed as a “suburban nightmare living in a suburban dream.”

The Tube Music Network will launch for the first time on a local station group in 29 Raycom Media markets in second qtr 2005 including Cincinnati, Cleveland, Memphis, Albuquerque and Albany, for a total of 10% of the country.  The Tube Music Network is a 24/7 digital network available to local stations to use on their digital channels. The Tube is sold to stations on a barter basis (5m barter time per hour / 1m to the local station).  Each hour consists of only 6m of commercial time.  Programming on The Tube includes classic videos (Duran Duran, Talking Heads), current videos (Dave Matthews, Los Lonely Boys), and catalog artists including Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, etc.  More info on The Tube Music Network available at: w ww.thetubetv.com.

So there you are, playing a game on your new Sony PSP, having fun and hanging out, when you think – gee, I wonder what’s going on in the world today …. ABC News has become the first news and information content provider to the PSP, with various ABC News programs available (or soon to be available) for downloading.  Currently the first program available for this use is the technology series Ahead of the Curve.

Sirius Satellite Radio has signed former MTVer Adam Curry to host a radio show made up entirely of amateur radio shows formatted for digital audio players – a format best known as “podcasting.”  While at MTV, Curry developed software that let’s people download a directly to their iPODs and other MP3 players.  Beginning on May 13, Adam Curry’s PodShow will debut on Sirius, air for four hours daily, utilizing podcasts provided by and created by listeners, on topics ranging from a conversation about a favorite music artist or movies to interesting hobbies and editorials. The show will include advertising, tho because of the irregular length of the podcasts, the format will be a little more liquid than the usual minute by minute formats. Curry’s show will be available on the services Talk Central channel 148.

Meanwhile, not to be outdone, Infinity Broadcasting is also taking a look at podcasts and according to The New York Times will convert San Francisco radio station KYCY 1515AM from syndicated fare to a predominately podcast lineup.  The lineup will also be available on the station’s website for folks outside the traditional listening area.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES*

Comcast Network Sales brought in Neil Baker as EVP/E! Networks & Comcast Network Sales, the division Comcast established last year to oversee advertising sales for its national networks – E! Entertainment Television, The Style Network, OLN, G4, AZN Television, and Sprout.   Neil will work closely with the senior management of these networks to support their unique advertising and strategic business objectives, placing a major focus with on-line sales activities, and collaborate with The Golf Channel’s advertising sales team, which has specialized, tournament-driven ad sales considerations.  Baker begins his new position immediately, is based in New York, and reports to Comcast Network Advertising sales President David T. Cassaro.

Mark Wilcox and Gregg Rawdin have been upped to the newly created ad sales positions of LSM/NSM at KUSI/San Diego.  Each will manage a team of local account execs, as well as being responsible for national spot sales.

NBC Universal has upped Kathy Kelly-Brown to SVP/Corporate Communications. Kathy begins her NY based stint on May 9, where she will report to Anna Perez, EVP/Corp Comm.  She steps in where Kevin Sullivan left off – Sullivan has been chosen by President George W. Bush to become US Assistant Secretary of Education.

* RATINGS *

Thursday – A18-49 Analysis – May Sweep Day #1:  Thursday night included the Presidential News Conference beginning at 8pm.  CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox all carried the 8-9p coverage live, while ABC continued its coverage with analysis until 10p.  The ratings here do not include the sustained news coverage for each of these networks.  With that said, CBS led the night with its 9-11pm programming slate, averaging an 8.0/20 A18-49, according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research. NBC was five share points behind with a 6.1/15, followed by ABC 2.0/5, UPN1.9/5, Fox and WB 1.6/4.  The  face off of the evening was between Mark Burnett’s Survivor and Mark Burnett’s The Apprentice, which ended up with a win for Mark  Burnett.  Survivor surviving against the Donald 7.8/20 vs. 5.5/14. Fox’s Simple Life didn’t survive its Presidential lead-in terribly well with an average of a 4 share.  CSI and ER also went head to head, with CBC again out front with CSI’s 8.3/21 over ER’s 6.6/17.

As for news coverage, according to preliminary time period averages from Nielsen Media Research, CBS had 15.2 million viewers tuning in (perhaps mistakenly thinking they would see Survivor), NBC 6.8m, ABC 6.1m, Fox 4.55m, UPN with its regular program lineup of WWE Smackdown delivering 4.47 million viewers, and 3.96 million viewers tuning into WB from 8-9p.  ABC’s post-press conference analysis hour 9-10p had 5.6 million viewers, more than Fox, WB or UPN for the hour.
