Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Monday, May 18, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In a potentially far-reaching policy change, Google updated its ad trademarks policy in the U.S. to allow some ads to utilize trademarked company names in the text of their paid search ads. “This change (effective from Friday) will bring Google’s policy on trademark use in ad text more in line with the industry standard,” writes Googler Dan Friedman in the company’s AdWords blog. Companies have long complained of competitors who use Google to piggyback off searches that use their trademarked name to capture users attention amid search results. Analysts see the change as a moneymaker for Google as advertisers will likely bid more for such placements, unless owners of the brand names are able to make the legal argument that they amount to copyright infringement.

And the answer is … D! There are oodles of opportunities for your brand to win with GSN: branded entertainment, brand integration, product placement, in-game sponsorships, partnership programming, and radio sponsorships!

Martin Scorsese-chaired World Cinema Foundation has struck a series of deals in an effort to distribute WCF’s films digitally across the globe, per THR. The non-profit group, dedicated to restoring and preserving neglected world cinema classics, has inked deals with distributor B-Side and online movie theater and digital community the Auteurs to make WCF titles available to multiple organizations and sites. The Auteurs will create a virtual screening portal that utilizes social networking to promote new releases. The group also signed a deal with Criterion to release its restorations on DVD. The WCF has restored 10 films to date.
announces a partnership with Comcast’s this morning bringing a variety of compatible original Heavy programming to multiple G4 outlets including G4 VOD, and G4’s popular Podcast platforms. Features shows will include The Burly Sports Show and Kung Fu Jimmy Chow.
Online media company AtomicOnline relaunched the GameRevolution gaming portal it acquired in Feb. 2008. One of the oldest existing online sources for gaming news, forums, strategy guides and cheats, the new site features a more visual interface and more sophisticated branding opportunities for advertisers.

Facebook has raised nearly $150 million in capital to fund a stock buyback program that will reward loyal employees with shares in the company, per VentureBeat. Start-ups like Facebook are struggling to hold onto gifted employees in the wake of a challenging IPO market.
The social networking giant is also preparing to launch a much-anticipated video chat application, according to multiple sources. (AllFacebook has spotted multiple signs in Facebook’s code suggesting as much.) Facebook has said it is only testing the feature and that it has no plans to launch it to users.

Online media verification start-up DoubleVerify announces its formal launch today following a trial run that recruited a number of blue-chip advertisers including a top bank, telecom firm and pharmaceutical advertiser. The technology helps agencies, marketers, publishers and ad networks increase accountability and transparency by tracking the actual delivery of clients’ ad campaigns and verifies that they are being delivered in compliance with the advertiser’s insertion order terms, conditions and buying guidelines. DoubleVerify is also announcing it has closed a $3.5 million Series A financing led by Blumberg Capital, with participation from First Round Capital, Genacast Ventures and private investors.

WiMax venture Clearwire announced it will utilize Cisco equipment to build out its “Clear” 4G mobile wireless internet service. Cisco has also announced plans to build new mobile WiMAX devices for the CLEAR targeting consumer, small office or home office, and small- and medium-sized business markets.

Video game sales plunged for the second straight month, according to NPD, dropping again by 17% y/y to $1 billion in the U.S. Software sales fell 23%, while sales of consoles and hand-held players dropped by 8% compared to April 2008.
Google Search again increased its search market share, accounting for 64% of all search queries in April according to ComScore. The company unveiled new features to its search engine designed to give users faster access to more precise information. Google had more than 155 million visitors to its sites, including its main search engine, followed by Yahoo sites (149 million) and Microsoft sites (126.5 million.) With a 615% increase in visitors, MSN/Windows Live Shopping Search was the fastest growing shopping search provider in April 2009, due in part to the popularity of its Cashback program that paid shoppers rebates for using the service.

This might provide some perspective as to why Google is raising its game in the paid search category (see top story.) The share of search traffic coming from paid listings is decreasing at the expense of organic traffic, according to a Hitwise analysis. In the four weeks to May 9, just 7.25% of search engine traffic to “All Categories” of websites was from paid clicks. This compares to 9.84% in the same four-week period in 2008 – 26% decline in the share of paid clicks. This trend is apparent across 16 of the 17 Hitwise parent categories (i.e. Automotive, Food and Beverage, Health and Medical, etc.) The only category that didn’t see a decline in paid traffic was Education, which received 1.45% of search visits from paid clicks compared to 1.39% last year.

Useful news podcast distribution app Stitcher launched a free version of its service on the BlackBerry App World platform. Stitcher aggregates and recommends on demand news podcasts from multiple national and international news sources; its iPhone app delivered more than 3 million shows during the past 3 months, according to Stitcher.
Nintendo introduces the $20 Wii MotionPlus add-on to the Wii Remote on June 8, a major upgrade that will allow the gizmo to track a player’s arm and wrist movements with greater precision. Compatible games include EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Bundle and Sega’s Virtual Tennis 2009.
Msnbc‘s newest personality Rachel Maddow now has her own ad-supported iPhone app, powered by Transpera. It features the full show podcast featured on as well as outtakes from her nightly newscast.

Tribune Media Services’ TV listings and news site received a (long overdue) facelift last week. New features include a cleaner look; improved navigation; more content from Tribune properties including the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, KTLA and WPIX; and of course a Twitter integration aggregating tweets from TV networks and Tribune media brands. Perhaps taking a cue from Bravo’s saucy Television Without Pity blog, the site has also slowly adopted a more irreverent attitude, which seems to be a must to attract TV fanatics on the web. Zap2it, which averages about 3 million ave. monthly users, is an interesting sidelight business for Tribune – one that has potential to become a local media powerhouse. The site already provides syndicated TV listings and reviews to 500+ local newspapers across the U.S. As newspapers are forced to cut entertainment editorial spending and morph into online properties, Zap2it could do online what its does in print, particularly if it invests more in original video content.
