Cynopsis: DIGITAL


Good morning, it’s Monday, March 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Google is working on a scheme to combine its on-air TV ad sales business, Google TV Ads with web video from YouTube and other Web sites to allow marketers to make cross-platform ad buys from a single interface, per the WSJ. The feature, which the company hopes will attract a higher class of brand advertisers, fits into Google’s larger vision of providing technology to make multiplatform buys easier to manage and more precisely measurable. It could also position the search giant to become an integral cog in serving ads to broadband video that migrates to living room televisions.


3D cinema continues to make strides in the marketplace. Top exhibitor AMC Entertainment committed to adding up to 1,500 RealD 3D screens across its circuit in the U.S. and Canada, bringing the company’s total footprint to nearly 8,000 committed screens worldwide. Meanwhile DreamWorks Animation‘s “Monsters vs. Aliens” proved to be the latest digital 3-D success story at the box office. The 2,080 3-D screens it was released on accounted for just 28% of its overall release, yet the 3D screens accounted for 56% of its box office revenues over the weekend.
Agnes Nixon
, the creative force behind long running soap All My Children, struck a deal with Fremantle Corp. to package the show at MIP ’09 for multiplatform audiences. Broadcasters licensing the show will gain access to additional interactive features and geo-targeted ad opportunities, delivered through an embeddable video player powered by Narrowstep.
RDF Rights
is collaborating with October Films to produce a fully-cleared international version of Rude Tube (8 x 30′) – the hit viral clip show launched by Channel 4 in the UK that organizes zany clips into series of Top 20 categories.


Flickr founder Caterina Fake revealed her latest creation, Hunch, a new ad supported social networking/decision making engine that allows users to pose questions that are answered using data culled from like-minded users. (Hunch is currently in private beta but is accepting applications from willing users.) The site asks you 10 or fewer questions about a topic such as “Should I Switch to A Mac?” to help identify priorities for individual users.

VOD vendor SeaChange International and Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) technology provider BIAP are teaming up to provide a new targeting advertising solution for cable operators deployable on legacy set-top boxes. The platform, combining SeaChange’s Spot 5.0 ad management system with BIAP’s AdAim Targeting Engine, serves ads based upon predetermined demographic, geographic and other targeting information.
El Segundo-based digital signage company Ripple TV secured an additional $4 million in funding from Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Trinity Ventures. Ripple TV, which installs ad-supported TV screens to retailers such as Borders and The Coffee Bean, reaches a cumulated audience of 10 million viewers a month measured by Nielsen Media Research. 
In what could be a boon for viral marketers, Facebook expanded SMS messaging functionality to Facebook Pages per buzzmarketing daily, enabling public profiles and business accounts to recruit members by having them send a text message.
FetchBack, an online advertising company that specializes in “retargeting,” announces the launch of a dynamic ad generation technology today that works within an ad serving platform. Its Dynamic Ad Serving solution can create an infinite number of display ads on the fly, while simultaneously serving them through its own Retargeting ad server.


There could soon be just two major premium broadcast video portals in the marketplace. Disney is in talks to take an equity stake in NBCU/News Corp. joint venture Hulu, in exchange for providing television programming to the portal, per Such consolidation would provide Hulu, which recently yanked its programming off CBS’, with programming from three of the 4 major broadcast networks.
No fooling – troubled cable company Charter Communications, the nation’s fourth largest MSO, announced it will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 1 in an effort to restructure its $21.7 billion debt. The company hopes to reduce it debt load by $8 billion after receiving $3 billion in new equity investment.
Hearst-Argyle Television announced it is forming a special committee of independent members of the Board of Directors to consider the buy out offer from Hearst Corp.


Collective Intellect announces today that MTV Networks has selected the company as a strategic partner for digital communications analytics and audience insights. MTV Networks will deploy Collective Intellect’s solutions to draw real time online audience insights regarding how consumers perceive and engage with its brands, content and marketing. The partnership encompasses all of MTV Networks’ brands including MTV, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, Nickelodeon, The N, and Nick at Nite.


Expect a number of big apps to be unveiled this week at the CTIA Wireless Convention in Las Vegas. For instance GigaOM has it from a “very reliable” tipster that an official Skype app is coming to the iPhone. The internet phone/IM/video conferencing application has over 400 million user accounts worldwide.
Here’s a cool idea: web start-up released a new Photo Finder app in private beta that allows you to use facial recognition software to search for photos of yourself and your friends on Facebook. There’s even an Auto Tag feature.
Inspired by the America’s obsession with bracketology, MSG Media’s Fuse has developed a music bracket app leading up to this week’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony to help fans compare classic artists with up and comers. The Rock Madness app, which tallied 1 million votes during its first week, combines fan voting, expert opinion and social networking functionality in an integration with Facebook Connect.
CBS Mobile introduced a free iPhone app for its whodunit murder mystery Harpers Island. View preview and summary clips from the show, check out background info on island guests and peruse an interactive island map to try and guess who will be bumped off next.


Former CEO of AOL Jonathan Miller is joining News Corp. to oversee all of the company’s digital assets as CEO of Digital Media according to reports. Jon will based in New York and report directly to Chairman Rupert Murdoch. Peter Levinsohn moves from President of Fox Interactive Media to President of New Media and Digital Distribution for Fox Filmed Entertainment under Dual chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman.


The ethereal nature of fame has never been more evident than on the microblogging platform Twitter. (Where else would you find a hundreds of thousands of people signing up to keep abreast of where Shaquille O’Neill ate breakfast?) Digg co-founder Kevin Rose seems to capture this with WeFollow, a new user-generated people directory that identifies the top-followed Twitter users by category including Celebrity, Actor, News and Politics. It works by asking users to tweet to @wefollow what category they’d like to be grouped under, limiting each personality to 3 categories. Not only does it tell us who is moving the needle on Twitter (Kevin himself is tops in the tech category), it also tells us where users’ priorities lie. Not surprisingly, the celebrity category surpasses all others by a wide margin.
