Good morning. It’s Monday, March 19, 2007 and this is your first early morning kids briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Will she or won’t she return for the final two Harry Potter movies?  Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint have both signed on again to play Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, respectively in the Warner Bros. movies.  As for Emma Watson, the actress who plays Hermione Granger, following months of rumors as to the answer to this question, over the weekend the to-do over her plans spiraled as News of the World, a weekly British Tabloid, published a story claiming that the actress has “refused” to re-up her contract for the last two HP movies, despite the producers offer “doubling her” fee to $3.9 million.  The report also quotes Grint saying, “Emma doesn’t want to do it any more.  She’s tired of being known as ‘that girl from Harry Potter’.”  Warner Bros. apparently confirmed for the tabloid that Watson has not signed as of yet.  At the same time BBC’s Newsround reports that a Warner Bros. spokesperson told it, “We’re extremely confident that Emma will be back for films six and seven.”  News of the World is published by News International Ltd., which is a subsidiary of News Corporation.

MORE KIDS STUFF

World Call Group is set to launch Wikkid, Pakistan’s first a kid-targeted satellite TV channel, this May 2007, per the Daily Times, which is owned by World Call Group.  The programming line-up on the new channel will include:

  • Cricket Crazy (50 minutes) focusing on cricket (the game) skills;
  • Natty’s Style School (30 min) offering tips for image conscious kids;
  • Chooti Duniya  a puppet show;
  • Meet Sangeet (30 min) a music series featuring kids;
  • Quiz Show;
  • Kitchen Clash  a cooking series;
  • Quran Stories  a half hour scripted program hosted by Sami Muzaffar;
  •  Street Smart (30 min) follows the story of two tweens;
  • Snake Pit (50 min) based on the novel of the same name;
  • Travel Bug (30 min) a entertainment/information series;
  • Sinbad Adventures on the Seven Seas;
  • Haaye School  a comedic look at school;
  • Aflatoon follows the misadventures of a character named Sunny;
  • Gup Shup with Laila (30 min) talk show;
  • Bachon ki Adaalat is a court show featuring trials of pop celebrities;
  • Morning Show  will offer the best in music, movies, video game reviews and so on.

German kids will find it quite convenient to watch An Inconvenient Truth following a collaborative effort between Paramount Pictures and Germany’s environmental bureau, per Hollywood Reporter.  In addition to 6000 German schools receiving a free DVD of the Al Gore movie this week, Germany’s CinemaxX will have matinee theater screenings for school classes in 27 cities.  The DVD will be released across Germany at the end of March.

Golden Spirit Enterprises Ltd. has signed a deal with Amazing Super Buddies Productions Inc. to serve as the Producer/Distributor for ABS: Power Force, a kid-targeted 3D TV series.  Currently in pre-production, the first season of ABS: Power Force will include 25×22′ episodes.  Under the agreement, Golden Spirit will receive a guaranteed 15% interest of gross receipts earned worldwide, which will include all character licensing and merchandise based on the series.  Additionally, Golden Spirit holds the distribution rights for the ABS: Power Force series and its characters under a joint pact with Industry Works Distribution, Inc.

BabyUniverse, Inc. and eToys Direct, Inc. have entered into a definitive agreement for an all-stock merger.  The merger, which has been approved by the boards of directors of both company’s, and assuming approval of shareholders, the deal is expected to close by second or third quarter 2007.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Anyone notice R2-D2 hanging out on the corner where your regular blue US Postal Service mailbox usually sits?  The Star Wars themed collection boxes are part of a new relationship between the US Postal Service and Lucasfilm Ltd and of course the Star Wars 30th anniversary.  Designed to look like the R2-D2, the little Star Wars droid, the Star Wars collection boxes also feature a website (uspsjedimaster .com), that when you get there offers clues to what the promotion is all about.  The mailboxes are for regular use, though I’m thinking I’ll look for a regular old blue box  you never know what a Star Wars fan might do to own their own piece of history.  More information about the promotion will come on March 28, 2007  but is anyone else thinking maybe Star Wars stamps?

In Sweden, the 2007 5th Annual Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for literature has been awarded to Venezuela’s Banco del Libro (Book Bank).  Founded in 1960, Banco del Libro is a non-profit organization that was initially set-up in 1960 as place to exchange textbooks.  Since that time Banco de Libro has developed and expended to become an organization that promotes reading and distributes books, across all genre of kid’s literature, throughout Venezuela including, “shanty towns, mountain villages, universities or out in cyberspace.”

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Rockstar Games has appointed Alex Moulee-Berteaux as its new Head of Marketing.  Moulle-Berteaux joins Rockstar from TBWA/Media Arts Lab, where he was most recently Worldwide Group Account Director for the Apple account.  Rockstar Games is a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.

Tripp H. Thornton has joined Good News Holdings, LLC as VP/Sales.  Most recently, Tripp was EVP, The Brainy Baby Company.  Previously he toiled for companies including M&M Mars, Rubbermaid, Keebler and Wal-Mart.
