CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

03/13/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 13, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Sony plans to release details of its PS3 launch on March 15, according to industry buzz in Tokyo. The announcement would give the company a jump on the Game Developers’ Conference set for next week in San Jose, CA, where Phil Harrison, President, Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment, is expected to give details of the PS3 in his keynote address. Sony’s new technology reportedly has plenty of “wows” when it was shown to a few gamers in LA last week.  Word on the street is the set will sell at retail in the $1,000 range – there’s another wow.

Microsoft Corporation will offer the first Free Xbox Live Gold Weekend, which will provide users with free connection to the Xbox Live online multiplayer gaming service, March 31-April 2, 2006.  The weekend is sponsored by Verizon and will include several events such as a 72-hour multiplayer schedule of Xbox 360 games, Xbox Live Arcade leaderboard tournaments, play and win contests and Xbox Live veterans serving as hosts for new gamers.  The Xbox Live community numbers 2+ million members according to Microsoft.

MORE KIDS STUFF

At its 2006 Annual Meeting on Friday John Lassiter, Chief Creative Officer/Animation for both the Disney and Pixar Animation studios, screened a trailer of Pixar’s movie Ratatouille, slated for release summer 2007 and said the project will be headed-up by director by Brad Bird (The Incredibles).  Additionally, Disney CEO, Robert Iger spoke about the DVD release of the old Disney feature Song of the South, controversial due to its portrayal of African Americans.  Iger said the company had discussed the release of Song of the South and that he had recently watched the movie, and told shareholders that the company would not release the movie on DVD.

In reporting its 4Q and yearly results DreamWorks Animation announced that it will not make the previously announced features Tortoise and the Hare and Tusker.

Skyland, an original Teletoon co-production, is slated to launch on the network on Earth Day, April 22, 2006 at 730p.  Skyland is an animated sci-fi action adventure series set in the year 2451 as the earth has been shattered into millions of blocks that now float in orbit around the earth’s core.  The series revolves around Mahad and Lena, a brother and sister team, who are battling to free their Mother from the evil tyrants who now rule the earth.  Teletoon holds the exclusive Canadian broadcast rights to the series.

Also marking Earth Day this April, public television stations will air Planet H20 a 2-part magazine-style program targeted tweens/teens and families.  From Thirteen/WNET Planet H20 focuses on the topic of water conservation and includes a series of stories from different parts of the country. The program is hosted by Sara Paxton and America Ferrera.

As of tomorrow High School Musical fans will be available to download the Disney Channel movie and two new music videos from the show at the iTunes Music Store, where several music videos from the movie have been available since the end of February.  The movie will start making its way around the world on Disney Channels from June 2006, beginning with Australia and followed by France, Spain, UK, Japan and India among others.  While a sequel to High School Musical is in the works and slated for 2007, Disney’s more immediate plans include bringing the TV movie to a range of platforms.

Agogo Corporation Hong Kong’s animated series Cocco Bill (104 x 15 min) has been sold to China’s CCTV.  The series will air across China on CCTV1 as well as on CCTV 7 and CCTV 14.  Cocco Bill is a parody of westerns based on comic books of the same name by Italian Benito Jacovitti.  Cocco Bill is produced by De Mas & Partners, S.r.l. and Agogo Media Ltd.

BBC Magazines will launch Amy, its new 32-page lifestyle magazine targeted to Girls 5-8, on April 14, 2006.  Amy will include various activities and CBBC brands including Tracey Beaker, Blue Peter, Smart and really Wild Show as well as featuring items about movies, arts and crafts, puzzles, dancing and quizzes.  Published every three weeks, Amy will cost about $3.40 per issue.

And for those of you looking forward to Nick Jr.’s preschool series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, the premiere date will be in 2006, not in 2007.

MARKETING/LICENSING

In an effort to get kids interested in trading card collecting, the Topps Company and Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine have teamed-up to launch the Topps S.I. For Kids Card Club.  The club will be supported by a website and in a special section within the magazine, both of which will feature new cards, ways to collect, sports trivia and games, and information about top players.  Beginning March 22, Topps Opening Day baseball cards will be available at retail, with each $.99 cent pack featuring an S.I. For Kids trading card that highlight regular features within the magazine (e.g. Max Action, Funny Photos) and, of course, a stick of gum.

Resilience LLC introduces The Bratz Couture apparel line this week at the ENK Children’s Club trade show in NYC.  Based on MGA Entertainment’s Bratz Dolls, the line of clothes features decorated denim, tees and sweaters; items in satin, faux fur and velveteen/denim decorated in Rhinestones; and stretch corduroy, printed georgettes, velour, and French terry with sequins.  The line was designed by Resilience’s Raphael Javaheri, Helene Stein and Jennifer Lee.
