Good morning, it’s Monday, June 8, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

New media outlets are finding themselves at the center of all sorts of controversies these days. Craigslist is back in the hot seat after a North Carolina man used the site to recruit someone to attack his wife with him in the room. Meanwhile St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa filed a lawsuit against Twitter for publishing a fake account bearing his name. (Someone purporting to be La Russa tweeted sardonically about sore subjects including a drunk driving charge, according the AP.) Twitter co-founder Biz Stone defended the company’s Terms of Service policy and responded to the growing problem of unauthorized profiles by announcing plans to launch a “Verified Accounts” option later this summer. Verified Accounts will guarantee authenticity for “public officials, public agencies, famous artists, athletes, and other well known individuals at risk of impersonation.” Now we’ll know whether or not it’s the real Shaq and the actual Dwight Howard using the platform to place a digital smack down on one another …

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Microsoft’s colorful new Bing search engine got off to a promising start last week, conducting 16.28% share of U.S. searches and a 5.62% share of worldwide searches, according to StatCounter. (Yahoo, by comparison, ended the week with 10.22% U.S. and 5.13% market share.) Microsoft began to unleash an expensive ad campaign for Bing, per the NYTimes, including TV commercials and a branded entertainment “Bing-a-thon” show on Hulu. The hour-long pitch, streaming live tonight at 8 pm ET, will star SNL’s Jason Sudeikis, Second City alum Fred Willard and Olivia Munn of G4. Those who watch the infomercial are rewarded with commercial free viewing on Hulu.
 
WEtv.com is introducing a pair of online programming initiatives today to promote its wedding-themed programming. The “Bridezillas on the Loose” viral campaign allows participants to send mock news releases to their friends to show what happens when a Bridezilla gets loose on the public. The site is also giving visitors a daily chance to win $5000 in cash.

The creators of San Francisco-based comedy show Exit Stage Left will stage a performance of the season finale of its 13-episode series live on June 25 at the main theater stage at San Jose State Univ. Seats are limited but don’t worry – KoldCastTV will stream the show live on the net.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Online ad spending dropped by 5% during Q1 despite projections for growth, according to a joint release from the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC). U.S. ad revenues totaled $5.5 billion for the quarter compared to $5.8 billion for Q1 2008, when ad spending spiked by 11% over the previous year. 
 
Lifetime announced a multi-faceted marketing program with Mary Kay, tied to the season 3 premiere of its hit original drama Army Wives. The partnership includes the vignettes produced by Nashville-based branded entertainment specialist Rink Entertainment in which celebrity make-up artist Ashunta Sheriff uses Mary Kay products to show viewers how to mimic the look of the series’ characters. The segments will be featured during commercial breaks of Army Wives, as well as online at myLifetime.com and MaryKay.com.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, survivor of pancreatic Cancer, is nearly ready to return to work after taking a 6-month medical leave to treat a hormone imbalance, per the WSJ. The fact that Apple’s stock has risen 68% since Mr. Jobs announced his leave is being seen as evidence that investors are confident that the company can survive without him.
 
Fox Interactive Media is abandoning plans to move into its plush new 420,000 square foot offices in Marina del Rey amid layoffs and financial difficulties, per the LA Times.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
The Palm Pre sold out within hours upon launch at several stores on Saturday, but critics complained that the company is trying to simulate demand by severely limiting the supply to Sprint stores and electronics outlets like Best Buy. New shipments are expected later this week.
 
Mobile social networking service Cellufun is reaching out to buyers of the new Palm Pre who may be frustrated with the lack of apps available at launch by reminding them that its browser-based games work on the phone.

Digital marketing agency Fanscape has hired former MySpace staffer Clea Shearer as Senior Manager of Social Media Marketing. Clea is based out of Fanscape’s Los Angeles office and reports to Fanscape CEO Larry Weintraub and President Terry Dry.

, Managing Editor of WashingtonPost.com, will be joining Fox Digital Media and Fox Entertainment Group subsidiary Beliefnet as Executive Editor.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Comedic video portal My Damn Channel, the contractual home for Harry Shearer’s internet stylings, has been promoting the return of the legendary mock-metal band Spinal Tap. The band, the fictional subject of Rob Reiner’s classic 1984 comedy This Is Spinal Tap, has its own new web home as well, relaunched in March. (They’re there all the time, 24 hours a day.) Spinal Tap will release a new album digitally on Amazon, iTunes and Play.com on June 16 and return for a 25th anniversary “One Night Only World Tour” at Wembley Arena on June 30 with The Folksmen, (the comedians’ folk counterpart from Christopher Guest’s A Mighty Wind.) It’s interesting how fictional creations can be made into cottage industries with the help of a little viral marketing muscle. Spinal Tap has been amazingly digitally savvy for a trio of crusty old rockers. The band launched it’s first mock web site – “Tapster” – back in 2000 where their song “Back from the Dead” was made available for download. Then there’s all those Stonehenge videos Nigel Tufnel appeared in for (all due respect) National Geographic.
