Cynopsis: Kids!

06/29/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 29, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

After setting records in its open on Wednesday, Paramount‘s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PG-13) joins last summer’s Warner Bros. release The Dark Knight (PG-13, July 2008) as the only two domestic movies to ever break $200 million in box office receipts in their five days, with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PG-13) earning an estimated $201.2 million in 4,234 theaters trailing just behind The Dark Knight, which earned $203.8 million in 4,366 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.  This weekend, June 26-28, accounted for 112.0 million of the receipts for the sequel, which opened with midnight showings on Wednesday, June 24.  In addition to regular theaters, the Transformers sequel also set an Imax five-day box office record.  According to Variety, opening on 169 Imax screens, the movie earned an estimated $14.4 million.  That’s twice the $7.3 million that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (PG-13, 2007) in its first five days in release in Imax theaters.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming are set to play Mary Jane Watson and the Norman Osborn/Green Goblin respectively in the Broadway musical Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, which is set to begin previews at the Hilton Theater on February 25, 2010 (a month later than initially planned), per Playbill.  Directed by Julie Taymor (The Lion King on Broadway, Across The Universe), Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark features music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge.  No news yet on who will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man.  As for the production delay, the producers say that the state and city permit process and landmark approvals to create the production as designed have taken longer than expected but all is now in place.  Based on Marvel’s Spider-Man character and comic books, the book for the musical was penned by Taymor and Glen Berger.  The show is produced by Hello Entertainment/David Garfinkle, Martin McCallum, Marvel Entertainment/David Maisel, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Jeremiah Harris in association with Omneity Entertainment/Richard Weinberg, the Mayerson/Gould/Hauser/Tysoe Group, Patricia Lambrecht and Jam Theatricals/S2BN Entertainment.

In other Broadway news, Kate DiCamillo‘s kid’s novel Because of Winn-Dixie is being adapted as a musical, per Publishers Weekly.  Published by Candlewick Press, a movie version of Because of Winn-Dixie was released by Fox in 2005.  Gerald Goehring and Michael Mitri of Patriot Productions, and Dorothy Berloni are producing the show.  While there is no creative team in place just yet, Winn-Dixie (the dog in the show) is being trained by Berloni’s husband Bill Berloni, the noted entertainment animal trainer responsible for training the original Sandy for the musical Annie and so many others.
