Good morning. It’s Monday, June 26, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have selected May 2, 2008 as the release date for the feature film Iron Man.  Iron Man picture marks a number of firsts. It is the first movie produced under the new Paramount and Marvel distribution pact; the first to be produced by Avi Arad in his new role as Creative Advisor to Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige; the first production under Arad’s new company, Avi Arad Productions; and the first to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment.  The movie is based on Marvel’s Iron Man comic book character, aka billionaire weapons-manufacturer, Anthony Edward “Tony” Stark.  After being injured by one of his own weapons Stark creates and dons a high-tech suit of armor and as Iron Man takes on evil wherever it is.

Zac Efron (High School Musical) has been cast as Link Larkin in New Line Cinema’s new movie version of John Waters’ Hairspray, which is being directed by Adam Shankman, per Newsweek.

Fox and movie producer John Davis have acquired the movie rights to young adult book author Scott Westerfeld’s adventure/fantasy book trilogy that begins with the first book titled Uglies, per Variety.  The second and third books in the series are Pretties and Specials respectively, Specials is slated to be published later this year.  Davis is currently working on the movie adaptation the adventure/fantasy YA book Eragon.

Mainframe Entertainment will use the Vicon MX40 motion capture system in its new CGI animated movie Tony Hawk in Boom Boom Sabotage.  95% of the animation for the movie features motion capture animation, which was all shot on location with Hawk in California and with skateboarders at Vicon’s stage in Canada.  Tony Hawk in Boom Boom Sabotage, distributed by Funimation Entertainment in the US, and by Alliance Atlantis in Canada, will be released on DVD this September 12, 2006 and is set to air on the Cartoon Network in November. 

UK-based Santoro Graphics’ CGI animated series Flux Deluxe is in talks with Cartoon Network US and Latin America and Nickelodeon to bring the series to each of the regions.  The Brazilian-themed 3D property was originally optioned by Fox Kids (now known as Jetix) two years ago according to C21 Media. Targeted to the K8-12 demo, the cartoon touches on educational content and street life in Brazil with the cast including a bunch of eco-warriors, DJs and skater kids at their local juice bar joint.

MORE KIDS STUFF

MTV celebrates this summer’s theatrical movie releases on TRL Movie Week, which begins today and runs through Thursday, June 29, at 3:30p.  Hosted by MTV VJs Damien Fahey, Vanessa Minnillo, Susie Castillo and co-hosted by Stephen Coletti, TRL Movie Week will include live and taped appearances by Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, Rosario Dawson, Kate Bosworth, Brandon Routh, Anne Hathaway, Hilary Duff, Haley Duff, Raven Symone among others.  Additionally, as part of the four day event, MTV News will feature behind-the-scenes set visits of movies including Fanboys, Unaccompanied Minors, and Grudge 2.  Online at MTV.com this week fans can find additional interviews with celebrities from upcoming summer movies as well as exclusive photos. MTV.com’s Overdrive will offer exclusive trailer premieres from Material Girls and The Science of Sleep, and interviews and clips from Bryan Singer (Superman Returns), Richard Linklater (A Scanner Darkly), and Michele Gondry (Science of Sleep).  Not all of these movies are for kids.

Buena Vista International Television inked a multi-year, multi-genre agreement with Turkish broadcaster TRT for a series of first run animated and live action features and Disney-produced kids and preschool series.  Some of the Disney/Pixar animated features to make their Turkish TV debut include Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life in addition to Walt Disney Pictures’ Pocahontas and Brother Bear.  Disney classics such as Mary Poppins, Dumbo and Alice in Wonderland and live action features The Love Bug, The Three Musketeers and others will make their way over.   TRT picked up Disney animated TV series including American Dragon: Jake Long, Disney’s Recess, Disney’s Aladdin, The Series and 101 Dalmatians (The Animated Series) as well as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Little Einsteins.

MARKETING/LICENSING

As part of MTV Networks’ ongoing strategy to grow its brands across Asia, Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products has inked into multi-year licensing agreement with Sanrio Far East Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sanrio.  Under the pact Sanrio F. E. will exclusively represent Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora The Explorer and Comedy Central’s South Park in Japan.  Additionally, Sanrio F.E. will manage select local partnerships including Sony Creative Products Inc. and Sega Corporation, in coordination with NVCP, as well as oversee the apparel, accessories, stationary, and publishing, toy and confectionary categories.

Too, Inc., the retail store targeted to tween girls, is planning to change its corporate name to Tween Brands, Inc. in an effort to show its commitment to tween consumers.  Too, Inc. is comprised of two brands, Limited Too and Justice, the latter which offers sportswear, accessories and lifestyle items for tween girls.  The company name change is expected to be finalized within the next 30 days, and will not affect the rights of stockholders of Too, Inc, and current stockholders will not be required to convert their Too, Inc. stock certificates for certificates in Tween Brands, Inc.

Reliance Communications has partnered with Disney to offer 16 animated video shorts, including 10 in 3D animation, designed specifically to be available via Reliance Mobile World in India.  The 3D animated content is among the first 3D mobile content to be available in India.  Additionally, consumers can download a range of content featuring Disney characters including wallpapers, ring tones, games, and comic strips from Disney Zone, which is housed at Reliance Mobile World.  All of the content is fee based, with games based on a per session fee.  Earlier this year Reliance Mobile World launched a Power Rangers game, based on the TV series which airs there on Toon Disney, became one of the highest downloaded games in India with 700,000 downloads.  A new Power Rangers game, based on Power Rangers SPD, will debut there later this month.

Correction:  Hit Entertainment is currently in discussions with a “variety” of partners for a its new kids TV channel.  Last week Cynopsis Kids reported that some time in the next two year Hit would launch a kids channel with Sparrowhawk Media.  We will keep you updated.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

WizKids CEO, Jordan Weisman announced he is stepping down from his role, “due to changing demands” of the hobby game industry, and that the company is reorganizing its Sr. management.  Weisman will continue to work with WizKids in a creative capacity, exploring new product innovations and game development.  Nicely done Jordan!  WizKids executive appointments include:

  • Lax Chandra has been appointed as WizKids’ President. Lax was most recently Topps Company’s Director/Business Development for the Entertainment Division and head of the Internet Group.
  • Joe Hauck has been named EVP/Sales, Marketing and Product Development.  He will focus his energies on growing WizKids’ market share and establishing strategic partnerships.  Hauk was most recently as VP/Brand Marketing, Wizards of the Coast, where he managed the Magic the Gathering brand.

First Look Studios has made several executive appointments at its First Look Home Entertainment arm, which come on the heels if its acquisitions of certain assets of Ventura Home EntertainmentLarry Hayes, Ventura’s founder takes on the role of Senior Advisor to FLHE.  He will work closely with the new team to grow the FLHE business.

  • Bill Bromiley has been upped to President, and will report to First Look Studios’ CEO, Henry Winterstern, CEO and COO, Bill Lischak.  He was previously President, Maple Palm Productions and EVP/Domestic Distribution, for Roger Corman’s Concorde/New Horizons Pictures.
  • Khoury has become VP/FLHE, reporting to Bromiley.  Khoury will continue to head-up the Operations Department, overseeing the duplication, replication and fulfillment of all titles.  Previously, Khoury was Director/Operations, PM Home Entertainment.
  • Vince Muscarella has been upped to Manager/New Media, overseeing Electronic Sell-Thru catalog and alternate licensing for the home video department.  He will also continue to work closely with the sales division.
  • Michael McLeod becomes SVP/Sales, FLHE, moving over from Ventura where he was SVP/General Sales Manager.  Previously, he was Director/Sales, Warner Home Video and prior to that with Universal Studios Home Video.
  • Gordon Prend will oversee FLHE’s marketing efforts, in keeping with his previous role at Ventura where he was SVP/Marketing.  Prend also held marketing positions at Universal Studios, Warner and Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
  • Marlys Clay is VP/VMI and Sales Reporting, First Look’s Vendor managed Inventory initiative.  She has previously toiled for Disney Home Video managing the Sales Planning and Reporting department.
  • Steve DeMille has become SVP/Marketing Services.  He had been VP/Marketing.  DeMille will continue to oversee creative for print, AV, online and web development as well as publicity.  Previously, he was SVP/Marketing, Unapix Films and its video unit A-Pix Entertainment.
  • Joining FLHE as Director/Publicity is Irving Der.  He will be responsible for heading the publicity efforts for the division’s home entertainment.  Most recently Der was Manager/Publicity & Communications, Radio Disney.
