Cynopsis: Kids!

06/01/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 1, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

KidMangoTV, a new syndicated K3-10 aimed TV programming block premieres today, June 1, 2009, on the MyFamilyTV network.  Launched by PorchLight Entertainment and ValCom, via its subsidiary MyFamilyTV, KidMangoTV debuts with a four-hour daytime block (Monday-Friday) and plans to expand with a primetime block and an educational/informational (E/I) Saturday morning block later this year.  At launch KidMangoTV features kid-targeted programming that is created and acquired by PorchLight, including Jay Jay the Jet Plane, Four Eyes, The Secret World of Benjamin Bear and My Goldfish is Evil.  Additionally, today also marks the debut of a corresponding website www.kidmango.com, will also offer kid/family-aimed content including programs such as WordGirl, Pocoyo and Doodlez, as well as games, comics and music among other things.  Moving forward, the plan is to expand with a primetime block and an educational/informational (E/I) Saturday morning block later this year.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Doctor Who finds a new companion in actress Karen Gillan for the forthcoming new season of the BBC‘s long running series.  Gillian will join the newest actor to taken on the role of Doctor Who, Matt Smith.  With filming set to begin this summer, the series will premiere on BBC One in spring 2010.  Of course … prior to the new season with new actors, there are three further Doctor Who specials featuring the current Doctor Who, David Tennant, which are slated for broadcast on BBC One between fall 2009 and the end of the year.  Additionally, the BBC has ordered an animated Doctor Who series spin-off (episodes about 6-minutes long) that will feature Tennant’s voice and will air on BBC’s Red Button service and CBBC, and as we told you last week Tennant will be featured in characters in a multi-episode arc of the kid-targeted series The Sarah Jane Adventures.  The animated spin-off follows on the heels of a 2007 animated special.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Funimation Entertainment acquires the rights to simulcast the anime series One Piece online in the US and Canadian as part of a new deal with Japanese producer Toei Animation, publisher Shueisha and broadcaster Fuji Television Network.  Under the agreement, Funimation can stream the new English-subtitled One Piece series in the US and Canada each week, one hour after each episode airs in Japan.  Each new episode of the current season will be rolled out weekly as One Piece continues its Japanese TV run, and can be found via www.onepieceofficial.com and shortly thereafter via Funimation partner sites.  Additionally, Funimation is set to release One Piece: Second Season, First Voyage on DVD on June 30, 2009.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Licensing Shop attends Licensing International Expo 2009 this week in Las Vegas where it will begin inking licensing deals for 9 Story Entertainment‘s kid-targeted reality/adventure series Survive This (12×22 and a 1×60 finale).  Created by 9 Story and wilderness survival expert, Les Stroud, Survive This was commissioned by YTV (Canada) and is set to premiere this month on Cartoon Network in the US and YTV.

WordWorld LLC names 4Kids Entertainment as the global licensing agent for WordWorld, the 3D animated preschool series that airs on PBS Kids.  4Kids plans to build a licensing program that incorporates education and play values across a range of categories.  WordWorld is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Ready to Learn literacy initiative.

Cartoon Network and local cable affiliates are partnering with Crayola, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Subway to promoted healthy living choices for kids and families via the TV network’s fifth annual Get Animated Tour.  Designed to educate K6-14 and get them energized about getting in shape and making healthy choices and featuring Cartoon Network’s shows and characters.  The tour runs throughout the summer (more info at www.cartoonnetwork.com) and includes interactive areas focused around different series and customized to communicate each sponsor’s branded message.
