Last Friday marked Jay Leno’s final Tonight Show on NBC. The show tallied its best Friday numbers during Leno’s 17 years as host, posting a HH rating of 8.8 and a 20 share from Nielsen’s 56 overnight metered markets covering more than 70% of US TV households. Looking back in the show’s history, when Johnny Carson wrapped his 30-year career as host of Tonight Show in 1992, that final show scored a 31.9 rating/62 share in the metered markets. As one era ends, another begins as Conan O’Brien takes over as the new Tonight Show host tonight. GSN launches a new three-hour block of original programming and hosted live entertainment on Saturday nights called Big Saturday Night starting June 13 at 8p. ABC announced summer schedule reshuffling with its comedies:
Veteran television producer, Jack Reilly died last Wednesday in a New York City hospital. He was 84. Jack’s television career included serving as VP/Managing Editor at CNBC from 1994 to 1998 where he launched the programs Squawk Box and Power Lunch as well as is the man to put Maria Bartiromo reporting live from the New York Stock Exchange floor on CNBC. Jack also served as Executive Producer for ABC’s Good Morning America from 1986 to 1994. Additionally, Jack is credited with developing the format for the syndicated daily program Entertainment Tonight in the early 80s. And, prior to that from 1972 to 1975, Jack was president of Group W Productions and also was executive producer on The Mike Douglas Show and the David Frost Show for Group W Productions in the 70s. Jack is survived by his wife, Timmie Reilly, four children and several grandchildren. A memorial service and mass to honor Jack’s life will be this Wednesday in New York, 2p at St. Malachy’s-The Actors’ Chapel, 239 West 49th Street. Flowers may be sent to St. Malachy’s or in lieu of flowers contributions in Jack’s name to his favorite charities, the Salvation Army or Catholic Charities. Independent production company LMNO Productions entered into a three-year deal appointing Endemol’s Southern Star International as the company’s exclusive distributor of content outside the US. The agreement covers new titles and a library consisting of more than 950 hours of programming. The first product involves the series The Little Couple, a 12-episode reality series airing currently on TLC. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Golf Channel is going for a par two with its original series The Haney Project, reports Variety. The series finished its frosh season last Friday where Hank Haney, Tiger Woods’ swing coach worked to improve Charles Barkley’s game. The network approved a second season of eight episodes for next March where Haney will take on a different celebrity student. For later this summer, ABC gave a green light for the auto competition series Crash Course from A. Smith & Co., cites THR. Over seven, one-hour episodes, viewers will watch as five couples take on four rounds of extreme driving conditions with one couple eliminated from each round. The final round, dubbed the Crash Course, is a large obstacle track. The series is expected to launch this August. Casting Call: HGTV is casting for a new show called Armchair Designer. In this new show, amateur designers will get the chance to work on a design project for a real client, with the help of an HGTV design star. Thirteen amateur designers will be selected individually, based on a 3-8 minute video submission.
