NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Turner Entertainment Network Japan and Itochu‘s Japan Entertainment Network (JEN) joint venture has signed on to create Japanese cartoons intended for the US K6-11 market. JEN will collaborate with both Japanese and US partners to develop the cartoons on a project basis with two productions expected annually according to Variety. The broadcaster has previously worked on adaptations of American fare for the Japanese market including the Dragonball Z series. JEN broadcasts Cartoon Network in Japan on cable TV and by satellite.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The 37th season of Sesame Street debuts on PBS Kids on August 14, 2006. The curriculum for the new season will return to the basics, focusing on the early stages of child development (emotional, social, academic etc) to help ready preschoolers for their first school experience. The season will also continue to support the last season’s campaign to teach young kids the building blocks of healthy habits via segments on healthy eating, physical activity and hygiene. Additionally, Sesame Street welcomes a new character, Abby Caddaby a fairy-in-training. As always, the new episodes of Sesame Street will feature some segments that while appropriate for kids also appeal to adults by creating pop culture parodies such as Law & Order: Special Letters Unit; Scramalot; The Breakfast Club; Survivor: Musical Chairs, featuring a Jeff Probst look-alike Muppet; and Outrageous Makeover: Home Edition. Underlining family meal time will be a segment called Dinner Theater, which will feature parodies such as Man of La Muncha, Veg Side Story, and Guess What We’re Having for Dinner. Celebrity appearances for the new season include Jamie Foxx, Matt Lauer, Amy Sedaris, and T.R. Knight. Sesame Street is underwritten in part by the McDonald’s Corporation, Beaches Family Resorts, Pampers and EverydayKidz.com from Astra Zeneca.
Nickelodeon returns to New Orleans 10 months after Katrina ripped through the city to see how the kids there and those who are returning are doing, in Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Children of the Storm, Sunday, July 2 at 8:30p. Segments in the show include kids talking about what it is like to return to the city where their homes once stood, a boy takes viewers on a tour of his neighborhood. One segment focuses on Ya-Ya group, that is the Young Aspirations/Young Artists group, who is working to help kids cope by telling their stories through art, music and poetry.
YTV will celebrate Canada Day, Saturday, July 1 (12n-7p), by airing original animation, created by Canada’s Studio B Productions, CCI Entertainment, 9 Story Entertainment and Breakthrough Animation in collaboration with YTV’s On-Air Promotions department, characters from YTV series introduce its own shows in all-new exclusive content. The on-air event, YTV’s Big BBQ Blowout, will be hosted by Ian Kelly, the animated star of Being Ian, with new footage created by Studio B Productions. Additionally, footage from CCI Entertainment’ new fall series Erky Perky as well as 9 Story Entertainment’s customized clips from Nelvana’s Jacob Two-Two, two special segments from Breakthrough Animation’s Captain Flamingo and Studio B’s The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers and Yvon of the Yukon will be featured during the block. The interstitial lineup also includes Marathon Animation’s Martin Mystery and Nelvana’s Jane and the Dragon who provided original recorded voice work for the Canada Day event.
Fremantle International Distribution has confirmed the sale of Falcon Beach (26 x 1 hour, plus 1 x 2 hour pilot), its new teen drama, to the BBC Daytime, along with a raft of other international broadcasters, which sets the series to be broadcast in 18 countries. In addition to BBC Daytime, Falcon Beach has been picked up by ABC (Australia); RTE (Eire); SBS (Flemish – Belgium); RTM (Malaysia); ANTV (Indonesia); ABC5 (Philippines); ETV (Sri Lanka); UBC (Thailand); Show TV (Turkey) and Hot (Israel).
Taffy Entertainment, the brand management company for MoonScoop and Mike Young Productions, has inked deals in Spain and Portugal for several properties.
- Seasons one and two of MoonScoop’s Code Lyoko has been picked up in Spain to air on regional channels ETB, Canal Sur, TeleMadrid, TV Valenciana and TV Galicia.
- Also in Spain, Nickelodeon has renewed its license for the series Titeuf; the deal includes 16 new episodes.
- Additionally, Canal+ has acquired model animation series A Town Called Panic for air in fall 2006. The show is produced by Belgian studio La Parti Productions, and also currently broadcasts on Spain’s TV Catalunya and on Nickelodeon US and UK.
- All three seasons (52 episodes) of MYP’s Jakers! The Adventures Of Piggley Winks have been picked up by Spain’s terrestrial network RTVE and digital service TDT TVE.
- In Portugal’s RTP has picked up Dr. Dog (52 x 13 min) and video distributor Prisvideo has acquired the home video rights to Fantastic Four and Titeuf. Dr. Dog is based on the popular book by author Babette Cole.
The preschool animated series Pocoyo has been picked up by Spain’s licensing, marketing and promotions agency El Ocho. The Madrid-based company will develop a full licensing campaign for the Pocoyo property in Spain. Pocoyo is co-produced by Zinkia Entertainment and Granada International, in association with Granada Kids and Cosgrove Hall.
Harlequin Enterprises Limited will re-launch its manga-format imprint, Harlequin Ginger Blossom, which will offer manga adaptations of its Harlequin romance novels, this September 2006. The Harlequin Ginger Blossom imprint was initially launched in December 2005 by Harlequin Books and Dark Horse Comics, the comic book and manga publisher, with two book lines, Harlequin Pink targeted to girls 12+ and Harlequin Violet. The first four Manga titles under the Harlequin Ginger Blossom’s Harlequin Pink line in North America are: No Competition, adapted from a novel by Debbie Macomber with art by Yukino Hara; Jinxed, adapted from Day Leclaire’s book with art by Akemi Maki; A Prince Needs a Princess, based on Barbara McMahon novel and featuring art by Reiko Kishida; and Never Kiss a Stranger, adapted from a book by Madeleine Ker with art by Mayu Kasumi. Dark Horse Comics will continue to provide expertise and support in the creation of Harlequin Ginger Blossom titles. Harlequin also publishes manga versions of 250+ of its titles in Japan under a licensing deal with Japan’s Ohzora Publishing Company, a creator of manga titles for women.
Eidos Interactive, a publisher/developer of entertainment software, is working on a special 10th Anniversary Edition of the video game franchise Tomb Raider. The game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics (Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend) and will be released for PlayStation 2, PSP and PC. The first Tomb Raider game was released in 1996 and to date the video game franchise has sold 30+ million copies.
Panasonic Corporation has signed on to serve as the title sponsor of the second annual Dew Action Sports Tour’s inaugural event, The Panasonic Open, which will be held June 22-25 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Dew Action Sports Tour is a competition tour featuring 150+ professional action sports athletes including vert skateboarder Shaun White (Men’s Half-Pipe Gold Medalist) and motorcross’ Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg. The events will be televised by NBC Sports and the USA Network. As title sponsor, Panasonic will receive tour-wide category exclusivity and event naming rights for the Panasonic Open as well as integrated marketing benefits including TV ads, print, event signage and branding, on-site activation/sampling, on-line, hospitality and inclusion in the tour’s marketing campaign. At each of the five the tour events, Panasonic will showcase a specially designed trailer, outfitted with its Hi-Def plasma TVs, digital cameras and camcorders. In addition, fans at all five stops will be able to borrow one of the company’s digital cameras during the day to take photos and given an SD card to take home their pictures. The remaining stops on the five-stop tour: Right Guard Open, Denver, CO (July 13-16); Vans Invitational, Portland, OR (August 17-20); Toyota Challenge, San Jose, CA (September 7-10); and Playstation Pro, Orlando, FL. Panasonic tapped action sports directors, Ty Evans and Aaron Meza, of the Girl and Chocolate skate teams to produce a series of short skateboard films based on the theme Share the Air, and feature Panasonic products.
Small World Toys has expanded its licensed product line with author, Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) to create four new products based on Carle’s graphics and characters. The first of Small World Toy’s Carle’s character-based products are rolling out in stores now. Commissioned by Target, Small World Toy’s new Carle products will be available for Holiday 2006 and include Brown Bear, Brown Bear Book & Puzzle Set (18 mos+); The Very Hungry Caterpillar Book & Magnetic Puzzle Set (18 mos+); Eric Carle Touch ‘N Read Blocks (6 mos+); Eric Carle Magic Sound Blocks (2 yrs+).
Ty has released its new ShaqBear the Beanie Baby, based on …? Good guess, NBA star Shaquille O’Neal. The ShaqBear is available with three different hang tags, each with its own poem, a Shaq fact and a message to kids from Shaq. ShaqBear is a 10” medium brown Beanie Baby that dons a white jersey and shorts, with red and yellow trim, the jersey says Shaq on the front and features the Dunkman logo, the back says O’Neal with his number 32.
Kamhi World, a talking action figure manufacturer, is set to release three Nacho Libre action figures. Licensed by Paramount the figures will feature the voice of Jack Black, who stars as the movie’s title character, and lines from the movie.

SEGA Europe and SEGA of America have unveiled the cast for the English language version of the popular Japanese game, Yakuza (generally meaning organized crime), which is slated for release here on September 5, 2006 for PlayStation 2. The voice cast will include Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville), Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Sin City), Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bring It On), Rachel Leigh Cook (She’s All That), and Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Batman: New Times). Featuring a script by noted Japanese novelist Hase Seishu, the game is driven by loyalty, honor, and revenge, the game delves deep into the subculture of Yakuza. The game is not for kids.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Gary Marenzi has been appointed President, Ensequence, a provider of interactive TV software and services. Marenzi will be responsible for representing Ensequence within the entertainment and advertising communities worldwide and grow the company’s international presence. Marenzi will be based in LA and will report to Enesquence’s CEO, Dalen Harrison. A former President of Paramount International Television and the Metro Goldwyn-Mayer Telecommunications Group, Marenzi was most recently Founder/President, Marenzi & Associates. Additionally, Marenzi serves on the board of The National Association of Television Program Executives and on the executive committee of the International TV Academy, and is also a member of the Executive Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Louise O’Toole has been named Managing Director/UK, Taffy Entertainment. O’Toole will report to Taffy’s Joint CEO’s Mike Young and Bill Schultz as well as Company President Liz Young. She will work in tandem with EVP/Merchandising and Distribution, Regis Brown and VP/US Licensing, Eric Stein. O’Toole joins Taffy from The Licensing Company, where she served as Acting Managing Director. Previously she was the European Brand Director for Star Wars, and at Entertainment Rights PLC where she managed kid properties including Basil Brush, Postman Pat and Little Red Tractor, also toiled for in marketing and licensing at Warner Bros. Consumer Products.
Sony Pictures Consumer Products has upped Mark Caplan to VP/Hardlines and named Sharie Van Gilder as Director/Softlines.
- In his new role, Caplan will now handle all Hardlines, which includes video games, toys and other related lines of business for SPCP properties including Open Season and Surf’s Up, TV animated series It’s a Big Big World and syndicated game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Caplan, who had been Executive Director/Interactive, overseeing video game licensing efforts for the studio, will continue to report to SVP, Juli Boylan.
- Van Gilder will oversee the domestic licensing sales for the Softlines categories including apparel and accessories, back-to-school, domestics and housewares for key theatrical properties Surf’s Up, as well as the new preschool TV series, It’s a Big Big World. She will report to Executive Director/Softlines, Ashley Maidy. Previously, Van Gilder served as Director/Retail, Warner Bros. Consumer Products where she developed and launched the first Harry Potter retail promotion at Marshall Field’s.
