Good morning. It’s Monday, June 15, 2009, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

Tonight’s Premiere:
MTV: Run’s House at 10p

Following Friday’s DTV transition when 971 television stations nationwide changed from analog to digital, the FCC said the switch “caused no widespread disruption of free, over-the-air television broadcasts.” On Friday, the FCC’s help line did receive a record number of calls, tallying 317,450 total. By market, New York generated the most calls Friday totaling 10,941 followed by Chicago at 6,526; Los Angeles with 5,473; Dallas-Fort Worth at 4,329; and Philadelphia at 3,749. By Saturday, about a third of the calls focused on the converter boxes and how to operate them and another 20% of calls dealt with reception issues. Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps said this about the transition and its results thus far, “I am pleased with the way our FCC team responded to the technical challenges that arose throughout the course of the day,” he said in announcing the call-center figures and outreach results. “But our job is far from over. This transition is not a one-day affair. We have known about re-scanning and reception issues for some time and have been doing our best to get the word out. We will continue to work with every consumer who needs assistance in making this important and necessary transition.”

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Reveille bought the rights to develop a workplace comedy for the US called The Nightshift, a popular series in Iceland which has been on the air since 2007, per THR. The plot centers on three gas station employees who work nights and have to deal with a parade of strange customers. Reveille has experience with revamping international format for US audiences as it also produces NBC’s The Office and ABC’s Ugly Betty. Shine Reveille International will distribute The Nightshift globally.

Discovery Channel handed a 10-episode order for the series Garage Wars from A. Smith and Co., cites Variety. The series, described as a Project Runway for mechanics, has mechanics in three cities battling in a bracketed competition against each other to find the best garage in the country. The network and A. Smith and Co. are currently searching for two car experts to be hosts of the show. Executive producing the series will be Arthur Smith, Kent Weed and Frank Sinton of A. Smith and Co. in addition to Tod Mesirow.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Digital transition weekend came in went without a major hiccup as government officials and tech installers worked overtime to meet demand for last-minute digital tuner installations. A total of 917 full-power stations turned off their analog broadcasts for good on Friday but the FCC said it received only 317,450 calls for help and info about the renewed digital coupon program. “Yesterday was a truly historic day,” remarked acting FCC chairman Michael Copps in and address on Saturday. “For TV broadcasting, it was a final farewell to the Dinosaur Age and the dawn of the Digital Age.” Facebook‘s vanity URL launch also seemed to go smoothly as no major outtages were reported.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:     In an effort to get kids outside and interacting with nature, the US Forest Service is partnering with the Ad Council to launch Discover The Forest, a tween and parents-targeted multimedia public service ad (PSA) campaign.  Discover The Forest officially debuted over the weekend in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day.  Created pro bono by ad agency Euro RSCG, the Discover the Forest campaign (TV, radio, outdoor and online PSAs) encourages tweens to experience nature first hand with the goal of fostering an ongoing interest in nature and conservation.  Brigham Young University Ad Lab created the radio spots pro bono.  The US Forest Service and the Ad Council have been partnering on the Wildfire Prevention PSA campaign, featuring Smokey Bear, since 1944.    Full edition: CYN KIDS
