Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 15, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

In an effort to get kids outside and interacting with nature, the US Forest Service is partnering with the Ad Council to launch Discover The Forest, a tween and parents-targeted multimedia public service ad (PSA) campaign.  Discover The Forest officially debuted over the weekend in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day.  Created pro bono by ad agency Euro RSCG, the Discover the Forest campaign (TV, radio, outdoor and online PSAs) encourages tweens to experience nature first hand with the goal of fostering an ongoing interest in nature and conservation.  Brigham Young University Ad Lab created the radio spots pro bono.  The US Forest Service and the Ad Council have been partnering on the Wildfire Prevention PSA campaign, featuring Smokey Bear, since 1944.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros.‘ long discussed remake of the mixed live-action/animated movie The Incredible Mr. Limpet appears to have found a director in Kevin Lima (Enchanted, and upcoming Thumb, Candy Land and The Spook’s Apprentice), per THR.  The original 1964 version of Limpet was directed by Arthur Lubin (live sections) and Robert McKimson (animated sequences) starred the amazingly fabulous Don Knotts as an ordinary man, Henry Limpet, who wants nothing more than to be a fish, and once he becomes one (in animated form) goes on to help the US Navy and the Allies in WWII.  No word on who will star in Limpet, though comedians that have been associated with the project include Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, and for a time Mike Judge was attached as director.  Producers on the Limpet project are Akiva Goldsman, Bill Gerber, Paula Weinstein and James Lassiter, and Chris Chase.

Amy Poehler will star in Universal’s big screen adaptation of author/illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka’s forthcoming graphic novel series Lunch Lady, per THR.  Poehler will also exec produce the movie with Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein producing.  Published by Knopf Books for Young Readers, the graphic novel series debuts this summer with two titles, Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians and Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute, with another set for release in December 2009 and more for summer 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Muppets from Sesame Street will be featured on the 29th annual A Capitol Fourth in Washington DC to celebrate America’s 233rd birthday.  PBS will broadcast the event live from the West Lawn of the United States Capitol on Saturday, July 4, 8-9:30p (check local listings) and it will be simulcast via America Forces Radio and Television Network, and can be heard on NPR Member stations.  A Capitol Fourth will be hosted by actor Jimmy Smits and feature opening and closing performances by Barry Manilow with the National Symphony Orchestra, and performances by Aretha Franklin, Natasha Bedingfield, the cast of Jersey Boys, Michael Feinstein and pianist Andrew von Oeyen.  The event is a co-production of Jerry Colbert of Capital Concerts and WETA, Washington, D.C.

Disney Channel UK re-commissions Prism Entertainment to produce a second season of the live-action short-form series Life Bites, per Broadcast Now.  The new episodes (26×5) of the tween/teen-targeted the comedy bows on the network in the UK next month.

Minds Eye International, a unit of Minds Eye Entertainment, will showcase the new live-action family-aimed feature film Pirate Camp (1×90) at DISCOP.  Pirate Camp revolves around a group of modern-day kids that are transported to a buccaneer training camp run by pirates.  The movie stars Corbin Bernsen (L.A. Law, Major League) as the head pirate Hookbeard and Seth Adkins (Funky Monkey, Bad News Bears).  Pirate Camp is produced by Family Three, a joint venture between LA-based Providence Productions and Antibody Films.

HarperCollins Children’s Books picks up the worldwide rights to a series of 13 kid’s books featuring Marley, the Labrador retriever from John Grogan‘s book Marley & Me, per Publishers Weekly.  The new series is expected to include titles in a range of formats such as picture books and I Can Read! books.  The agreement builds on HarperCollins Children’s other Marley books including the middle-grade Marley: A Dog Like No Other, which is a youth-aimed version of the original book, and picture books Bad Go, Marley! and A Very Marley Christmas.  The first book under the new pact is slated for publication this summer.

NCircle Entertainment will release the new DVD Dive Olly Dive: Ship Shape Sub on August 4, 2009.  Targeted to preschoolers, the 3D animated DVD features five episodes of Dive Olly! Dive!, which airs in the US on PBS Sprout.  Additionally, a limited supply of Dive Olly Dive: Ship Shape Sub will have a special on-pack bonus DVD of Front Row Fun, including two hours of programming from preschool shows such as Sid the Science Kid, WordWorld, Will & Dewitt etc.

Writer/illustrator Anthony Browne is named as the UK’s Children’s Laureate for 2009-11.  Browne’s books include Willy the Wimp and Little Beauty.

MARKETING/LICENSING

LeapFrog: Let’s Go To School, LeapFrog’s first DVD in four years, is set for release from Lionsgate Home Entertainment on August 18, 2009.  Targeted to K3-6 the back-to-school DVD features five sing-along songs, an interactive alphabet book, and a sneak peek at Math Adventure to the Moon.  Lionsgate will support the LeapFrog: Let’s Go To School title with a mom-aimed TV, online and print marketing campaign, including through LeapFrog’s email newsletter and on LeapFrog.com.

RIVR Media Interactive teams with Dalmatian Press to launch Moving Picture Books, a line of digital storybooks for preschoolers.  The first 38 Moving Picture Books titles are available as an app for the iPhone/iTouch, on DVD, SanDisk and as digital downloads via www.movingpicturebooks.com .  The books are available with both English and Spanish narration.  Moving forward the plan includes distribution at retail and for mobile phones later this year.  Eight new titles are in the works.

Little TikesCozy Coupe car has been inducted into Cleveland’s Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, a Collection of Western Reserve Historical Society.  Outselling every car in the US, the Cozy Coupe, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, has sold 10+ million units since its launch.  To give you a sense of how popular the kid-powered car is, a Cozy Coupe is manufactured every minute of each day, 50 weeks a year.  Jim Mariol, a former member of the Chrysler design team, designed the Cozy Coupe for Little Tikes.  MGA Entertainment acquired Little Tikes in 2006.
