Tomorrow at 7a ET/10a PT E! Entertainment, ABC, CNN, MSNBC and NBC will broadcast live from the memorial service for Michael Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Incidentally, demand to be at the memorial was high as more than 1.6 million fans registered to receive two tickets through the lottery for 8,750 pairs available. As seating is limited, some of ticket holder will sit inside the Nokia Theater where giant screen TVs will be set up. The City of Los Angeles is also bracing for a massive crowd to gather outside the Staples Center and are expecting anywhere from a quarter-million to 700,000 fans.

Coverage of the 96th Tour de France began July 4 on VERSUS, the exclusive television home in the US for the 2,000-mile bicycle race. VERSUS will present a total of more than 250 hours or an average of 13 hours of the Tour de France each of the 23 days including live coverage and an expanded primetime show. VERSUS’ coverage will include all 21 stages of the race, produced for the first time in full hi-def. Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen serve as announcers for VERSUS with Frankie Andreu and Robbie Ventura as field reporters and Craig Hummer and Bob Roll hosting the nightly primetime show. This year’s race is particularly interesting as the last four race champs will be competing including Lance Armstrong (for the first time since 2005), Oscar Pereiro (winner in 2006); Alberto Contador (2007 winner); and Carlos Sastre (2008 winner). This year also marks the first year VERSUS holds the exclusive US TV rights for Tour de France, a five-year deal the network made with Amaury Sport Organization, the organizer of the race.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, veteran reporter Steve Brennan died on Thursday at Cedars Sinai Hospital, after battling cancer for the past year.  He was 57.  Based in Los Angeles, Steve had been with THR for the past 20 years and was known as a lively, creative, jocular man who reported fairly on the entertainment industry. As a Ireland native, Steve began his career at Independent Newspapers in Dublin, receiving a National Press Award for investigative reporting. Once he joined THR, he was also that publication’s Ireland correspondent, before he moved to LA in 1989. He will be greatly missed in our marketplace.  Steve is survived by his wife Bernadette, who often joined him on various press functions. Information on the funeral service is pending and will be reported here once we learn the specifics.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Facebook upstaged Wimbledon over the July 4 weekend in the British press after the wife of the new head of England’s spy agency MI6 posted pictures of her husband, family and friends on the social networking site. (Mail Online has some of the since-removed images here.) Apparently Lady Shelly Sawers was unaware of the site’s privacy options, making details of the family’s private life available to any and all of Facebook’s 200 million+ users. (Perhaps it’s time for Facebook to launch an educational campaign to alert users about what their options are?)  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:    The weekend box office race for the number one movie comes down to a tie with Fox‘s newly released 3D animated movie Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and DreamWorks/Paramount’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, now in its second week, each taking in an estimated $42.5 million domestically for the July 4th holiday weekend.  So we’ll have to wait until the final numbers to come in to see which movie took the weekend domestically.  Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs earned a total of $215.5 million in worldwide box office receipts, $148 million of that was gleaned internationally in 101 markets, which, per Variety, makes it the biggest international open for an animated movie ever.  Full edition: CYN KIDS
