CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

07/31/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, July 31, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Hold onto your video game gadgets folks, because the word buzzing through the internet (read: unconfirmed rumors) is that the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, aka E3, will either be downsized, reconfigured, relocated and/or cease to exist entirely.  To that end many of the reports suggest that a formal announcement about the future of E3 will be made in the next day or so.  The last E3 show had upwards of 500 exhibitors and was attended by 60,000+ people.  So, why you ask would this extremely popular show be significantly changed or cancelled?  Well, again citing discussions and reports on the internet, some publishers, not any of the big 3 or 4 of course, are saying they aren’t getting the best bang for the enormous amount of bucks they were spending on the show.  Rumors being what they are, let’s leave it there until we tomorrow.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The voice cast for the Disney/Pixar animated movie Ratatouille will include Patton Oswalt, Brian Dennehy, Brad Garrett, Janeane Garofalo, Ian Holm and John Ratzenberger.  Slated to open June 29, 2007, Ratatouille is being directed by Brad Bird with Jan Pinkava serving as co-director.

Nicole Kidman will portray the sinister yet charming Mrs. Coulter in New Line Cinema’s movie adaptation of The Golden Compass, per Variety.  The Golden Compass is the first book in author Phillip Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Materials.  New Line Cinema is set to begin production on its $150 million feature film this September 2006 in the UK.  Helming the project is writer/director Chris Wietz.  Selected through open auditions across the England, Dakota Blue Richards will star as Lyra Belacqua.  The Golden Compass is being produced by Deborah Forte for Scholastic Entertainment and Weitz’s Depth of Field production company.

MORE KIDS STUFF

If you haven’t heard the news, you’d better sit down and ready yourself to explain to the kids why they can’t go and see Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) in London’s West End next year.  The New York Times reports that come February 2007, 17-year old Radcliffe will star in a revival of playwright Peter Shaffer’s Equus.  Radcliffe will play Alan Strang, a troubled stable boy who has blinded a group of horses, a role that requires Radcliffe to appear from time to time in the all-together, that is no Harry Potter invisible cloak, no nothin’.  Richard Griffiths will play opposite Radcliffe as the teen’s psychiatrist.  Equus premiered in London at the Old Vic in 1973, opening two years later on Broadway.  The revival is directed by Thea Sharrock and produced by David Pugh; a theater has not yet been announced.

The live-action movie in Marvel’s X-Men series, X-Men: The Last Stand will be released on DVD this October 3, 2006.  The Fox release will be offered as a single disc movie edition of the DVD or as a two-disc collector’s edition. Both will feature oodles of extras such as ten deleted scenes, three alternative endings, a commentary track featuring director Brett Ratner, movie trailers, two hidden “Easter Eggs” that when found unlock additional content.  The two-disc release will also come with an exclusive commemorative book written by Stan Lee, which includes a new story written by Lee.  A DVD boxed set including all three X-Men movies will also be released.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has partnered with AMC Beauty to develop both women’s and men’s fragrances inspired by the characters on The O.C. AMC Beauty will roll out The O.C. for Her and The O.C. for Him, in .5 ounce and 1.7 ounce versions, October 2006.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Joseph L. D’Amico has been named as the interim CEO, Tower Records by the company’s Board of Directors.  D’Amico will take over for Allen Rodriguez, who exits the company at the end of this month, coinciding with the end of his contract, after serving as CEO, MTS, Inc. (d/b/a Tower Records) since 2003.  Tower Records has retained the investment Bank of Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin to sell the company, with D’Amico’s primary responsibility to execute the strategy.  D’Amico joins Tower from FTI Palladium Partners where he was Senior Managing Director, serving in interim management capacities for companies.   Tower owns and operates 89 stores in the US with 144 additional stores run by licensees in nine countries; the company also has a significant online retail business.

Ali Kokmen has been named Manga Marketing Manager, Del Ray.  He will be responsible for the development and implementation of marketing strategies, online marketing, promotional materials, and advertising plans for the manga imprint and work in tandem with Del Rey Manga’s Associate Publisher of Dallas Middaugh and VP/Deputy Publisher Scott Shannon.  Kokmen will report to Ballantine/Del Rey Associate Publisher and Director/Marketing Kim Hovey.  Most recently, Kokmen was Director/Book Sales, CPM Press, the graphic novel publishing arm of Central Park Media.  Previously he worked for Collins Design, HarperCollins Publishers.

And a quick housekeeping note — Cynopsis will be on vacation (no editions) during the week of August 7th, but no worries – we’ll be back in full force on August 14th.
