TV Guide Network made a deal with Disney-ABC Domestic Television acquiring the exclusive basic cable off-network rights to the series Ugly Betty produced by ABC Studios. This deal represents TV Guide’s first scripted series acquisition in a programming strategy designed to increase audience. As part of the agreement, TV Guide will have access to all existing and future episodes of Ugly Betty, debuting on the network as a weekly strip starting fall 2010. Additionally, TVGuide.com will be able to stream up to five episodes at a time online. TV Guide will also have repurposing rights for the upcoming season of Ugly Betty on ABC, opening this October. TV Guide will air encore episodes two weeks after they have initially made their debut on ABC.

Comcast Corporation became the first cable service company to provide the HBO On Demand service in hi-def. The service is now available to Comcast On Demand customers who also subscribe to HBO.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

Toronto-based E1 Entertainment in production partnership with Thump Inc. began production recently on the new series Copper (wt). The one-hour, 13-episode series will shoot through this November and was commissioned by Canwest and acquired by ABC during development. Joely Richardson (FX’s Nip/Tuck) will appear in Showtime’s series The Tudors during its fourth and final season portraying Catherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth and last wife. Richardson will appear in five episodes which are currently being shot on location in Dublin. Showtime will premiere this final season of The Tudors, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry VIII, in 2010. The series is an Ireland-Canada co-production and is a collaborative effort between Octagon Films, Reveille Productions and Working Title Films and is presented in association with Peace Arch Entertainment.

Dominic Monaghan joins ABC’s new drama series FlashForward debuting September 24 and also starring Joseph Fiennes. Monaghan last appeared on ABC’s Lost.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Microsoft presented an olive branch to EU regulators on Friday, offering to ship Windows 7 with a piece of software that allows consumers to choose among several web browsers. Microsoft has also offered to share more information with developers seeking to create software for the platform. The company is trying to stave off new antitrust measures before the release of the operating system on Oct. 22, as past fines have totaled 1.7 million euro. The news comes on the heels of the release of Microsoft’s disappointing FY Q4 results last Thursday, when the firm reported revenues of  $13.1 billion – a 17% drop from the same period a year ago. The report resulted in a sell off of Microsoft shares and a bad day for the stock market overall. The Redmond, WA. – based firm attributed the slowdown to the softening economy and a slowdown in PC sales. Online ad sales also fell by 14% during the quarter.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Here in the US the new US Federal Communications Commission Chairman (FCC), Julius Genachowski, announced at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing that he has opened a new inquiry into kid programming rules, and how “the FCC can best protect children in a digital age,” while also taking into account current concerns and new opportunities in today’s world.  The effort, triggered at least in part by the ever-growing platforms where kids can access content, will also review the current FCC rules guiding kid’s programming, and may require broadcasters to air more kid-appropriate educational and informational programming than the three hours they are currently compelled to offer, while also looking to include rules for cable, satellite, mobile video content and the web as well as video games.  The current rules, under the Children’s Television Act, were mostly established in the 1990s (there has been some modification since then) and also contain rules concerning limits on advertising, including the amount of ads, during kid-aimed programming.  The Senate hearing also included discussion of the ability of parents/caregivers to identify and locate kid-targeted educational programming.   Full edition: CYN KIDS
