Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07/27/09
Good morning, it’s Monday, July 27, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, complete with a summary of what happened when we were away.
Microsoft presented an olive branch to EU regulators on Friday, offering to ship Windows 7 with a piece of software that allows consumers to choose among several web browsers. Microsoft has also offered to share more information with developers seeking to create software for the platform. The company is trying to stave off new antitrust measures before the release of the operating system on Oct. 22, as past fines have totaled 1.7 million euro. The news comes on the heels of the release of Microsoft’s disappointing FY Q4 results last Thursday, when the firm reported revenues of $13.1 billion – a 17% drop from the same period a year ago. The report resulted in a sell off of Microsoft shares and a bad day for the stock market overall. The Redmond, WA. – based firm attributed the slowdown to the softening economy and a slowdown in PC sales. Online ad sales also fell by 14% during the quarter.
The BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 Television Corp. announced intentions to scrap “Project Kangaroo,” a plan to develop a commercial version of the BBC’s popular free online iPlayer catch-up service in the UK. Instead the technology will be sold to iTV vendor Arquiva Ltd., which plans to launch a VOD service in the UK later this year. The plan was effectively doomed after antitrust regulators failed to give its blessing to the project last February, per the WSJ.
Firing another salvo against the blogging community, the Associated Press unveiled a new news registry system designed to track AP content online and assure its authorized usage. The registry will initially cover all AP text content online, will be extended to AP member content in early 2010 and will eventually be expanded to cover photo and video content.
Disney is planning to launch a subscription-based online content service offering access to movies, TV shows, games and other content for a flat monthly fee, according to comments made by Disney CEO Robert Iger at a Fortune conference last week.
The American Film Institute has launched a new video portal on AFI.com featuring social networking features and hundreds of videos from the AFI Archive. The launch coincided with TV Land Prime’s broadcast of the AFI Life Achievement Award tribute to Michael Douglas last week.
ESPN is expanding upon its network of local sports sites, adding localized sites in Dallas this fall, followed by portals targeting fans in New York and Los Angeles during the first half of 2010. Like the inaugural ESPNChicago.com, each site will stream its own short-form SportsCenter, hosted by SC anchors and providing a roundup of the city’s sports news each day.
News Corp. may add casual gaming to its MySpace social networking site, according to comments made by digital chieftain Jonathan Miller at conference organized by Fortune last week.
Comcast began rolling out an HD version of the HBO On Demand service in select markets.
Not even college town newspapers are safe. Advance Publication’s 174-year old Ann Arbor News became the latest print daily to transition to an online-only edition. However AnnArbor.com will take a page from the neighboring Detroit Free Press/Detroit News, trying a print edition twice a week.
NBC.com launched a new website for The Jay Leno Show, which is slated to move to a new 10 pm time slot this fall. Leno’s new web home includes live streaming video from the set, two blogs, highlights from past shows and a weekly video posting from Jay himself.
Web production firm Generate announced a branded entertainment pact with DiVide Pictures, the multiplatform company co-founded by actor/producer Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes) and producer Russ Cundiff. The two companies will team up to produce and develop digital programming concepts sponsored by major brands. Both have produced branded entertainment for retail outfitter American Eagle.
Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment unveiled a new time travel-themed web series at ComicCon, co-produced with Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. The latest incarnation of the comic for digital platforms, the 10-episode Time Jumper launched on Friday as an iTunes exclusive, retailing for 99 cents per 5-7 minute episode, and viewable via computer, iPod, iPhone or Apple TV. Comic fans should recognize the voice of Lee Excelsior, CEO of H.U.N.T. – it’s Stan the man Lee himself.
Candace Bushnell, creator of HBO’s Sex and the City and NBC’s Lipstick Jungle, is turning to the web with a new show about women in the workplace, produced with Meredith Corp.’s More magazine. The Boardroom, sponsored by Maybelline New York, stars Jennie Garth from Beverly Hills, 90210 and Talia Balsam from Mad Men among others.
Twitter began a new educational push to teach small businesses how to use the service to market their goods and services.
Online and iPhone audio application maker Stitcher has struck a wealth of new content partnerships adding the content from CNBC, BBC World Service, National Geographic, Public Radio International, Revision3 and Dictionary.com.
Comedy star Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory) is taping a new web series scheduled to premiere on Sony’s Crackle.com in Oct., per Reuters.
Buddy Media unveiled a Twitter Management System for brands and agencies allowing marketers measure and identify Twitter trending topics around a particular brand, related topics and competitors.
Havas Digital and New York-based Traffiq have struck a deal to utilize Traffiq’s ad platform to plan and execute ad transactions for many of the agencies’ clients’ digital campaigns, per Adweek.
BBDO Worldwide New York-repped FedEx, which bowed out of advertising during the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years in Jan., launched a funny web video ad campaign complete with a dedicated YouTube channel, per the WSJ. The viral videos are directed by TV writer Bob Odenkirk and feature comedian Fred Willard in a series mock infomercials.
Following a disappointing earnings report of its own last week, Amazon announced it is acquiring online footwear retailer Zappos.com for $847 million in cash and stock – its biggest acquisition to date. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos also apologized for a literally Orwellian misstep by its Kindle division. Amazon was widely criticized for deleting electronic copies of George Orwell’s catalog from customers’ Kindle hard drives after discovering it had sold unauthorized copies of the books. (Orwell would no doubt have shuddered to think of the level of control Amazon has with the Kindle platform; the device’s terms of services agreement makes users sign off on Amazon’s power to delete, modify, suspend or discontinue service any time it sees fit.)
Apple, on the other hand, got through the latest quarter with record earnings. The company posted revenue of $8.34 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.23 billion, selling 2.6 Mac computers, 5.2 million iPhones and 10.2 million iPods during the period.
Yahoo had both good news and bad news for investors last week, announcing an 8% increase Q2 profit to $141 million but a drop in gross revenue for the third consecutive quarter, decreasing by 13% to $1.57 billion. Categories including travel, entertainment and finance saw the biggest declines.
New FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski formerly laid out the new agenda for the commission, naming affordable broadband and openness and transparency among providers as priorities. Integrating broadband access with the television and other electronic devices is also on his wish list, according to an interview published in the LA Times.
Subscription rental service Netflix is looking to add HBO, Showtime and the new Paramount/Lions Gate/MGM joint venture Epix to its list of streaming video content providers, per Reuters. Netflix signed a deal with Starz to stream last Sept. to offer up to 2,500 titles via its Watch Instantly streaming option.
Adobe took the wraps off of the Open Source Media Framework portion of its “Strobe” project, designed to popularize Flash on multiple consumer electronic devices. The framework includes open APIs to allow developers to build plug-ins and third party applications for the platform.
Clearwire introduced its 4G Clear WiMax service to the Las Vegas market and announced plans to launch a dual 4G/3G modem in retail outlets nationwide on Aug. 1. The modem will retail for $80 with a rebate.
How’s this for next gen – Sonic Solutions is teaming with Roxio’s CinemaNow service to offer 3D playback of movie downloads on PCs and devices equipped with “NVIDIA 3D” vision graphics processing chips. The solution, which won’t require viewers to wear those corny glasses, is currently being marketed to electronics manufacturers and will support existing screens such as the Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ and ViewSonic FuHzion VX2265wm, currently in the market for 3D gaming.
Even YouTube is getting into 3D, launching a new experimental feature allowing users to shoot and upload their own 3D videos.
Gannett’s USA Today announced it will begin collecting Kindle book sales data to add to its weekly best seller rankings. The paper will fold in Kindle sales with sales from other categories including paperback and hardcover results.
MLB launched the video version of the iPhone app it has been previewing on its audio app, offering live video streaming of out-of-market games. The MLB.com At Bat 2009 app costs $9.95 to view games for the rest of the season, but it works in conjunction with the MLB.tv online subscription of games (which ranges between $80-$110, depending on the package.)
Cable MSO and WiMax investor Comcast launched its first iPod app. The triple-play app gives Comcast customers remote access to TV listings, on demand movie trailers, unified Comcast.com and Comcast.net email, address book sync, voice mail and visual voice mail, among other features.
Comcast has also partnered with RealGames and marketing technology provider Bunchball to launch its own gaming portal offering classic arcade, card, strategy and puzzle titles. Community features enable players to create profiles, customize avatars, chat with friends and win virtual prizes. Comcast says it has accumulated more than 1.5 million members during its beta phase.
SyFy.com got its new ComicCon app out in time for the confab featuring coverage from the network’s many panels.
Multiplatform programmer Current Media named former Interpublic CEO and MTV Networks President and COO Mark Rosenthal as its new CEO, effective this morning. Mark replaces founding CEO Joel Hyatt, who will move over to Vice Chairman.
San Mateo, CA-based Brand.net has hired former Goldman Sachs VP Cindy Panchula as VP/Finance. She reports to Elizabeth Blair, CEO of Brand.net.
Buffalo, NY-based Synacor named former Scripps Network Interactive SVP Tim Peterman as COO.
Brand.net added former Goldman Sachs Technology banker Cindy Panchula as VP/Finance.
Clash Media hired interactive marketing specialist Jeff Pavelcsyk as Business Development Manager.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
Yahoo launched its long-awaited homepage redesign while we were away, following the open source trend allowing users to add and subtract applications from rival content producers and (soon) to sync content from both PC and mobile screens. Social networking junkies will be happy to see status updates integrated with their homepage, allowing users to track status updates on multiple sites including Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. The My Favorites tab features over 65 interactive apps from content providers including NPR and USA Today, as well as apps from the leading social networks. The App Maker engine allows users to develop their own apps tied to unique URLs. Trend Setter is cool new feature tracking popular searches, insights and blog postings utilizing data from Yahoo Buzz. A hyper-local feature offers the ability to track geo-targeted news and happenings. There are some kinks to be worked out but, all in all, Yahoo is on the right track here – giving users much more control over their browsing experience. We look forward to seeing Yahoo’s web, mobile and eventually television applications fully integrated.
