Cynopsis: Sports
07/25/11
Good morning. It’s Monday, July 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With all the big money deals hitting the big NCAA conferences, a ripple effect is now being felt by the mid-majors. A deal the other week between the Southern Conference and public television systems in the southeast is a clear reflection of the broadcast issues, even beyond dollar figures, affecting college sports. The deal now places conference sports on nearly 11 million homes through 32 affiliates throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia in a three-year partnership and was negotiated and executed by Atlanta-based marketing firm CSE. The conference will now also be allowed to stream live games to fans.
Cynopsis Sports spoke with both Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino and Ned Simon, CSE’s Senior Vice President Programming, Media Services about the unconventional move away from a sports channel as well as the future of mid-level conferences in the NCAA.
Iamarino on moving away from a traditional broadcast model: As we looked to the 2011-12 season for both football and basketball, Fox Sports was very upfront with us that we were going to be getting squeezed in terms of broadcast windows. Fox made some big acquisitions recently when they purchased the rights to the Big 12 conference, Conference USA and the Pac 12, and what that meant to us was that we would not be able to get consistent broadcast windows for football, and we were going to be in a position where they wouldn’t know the starting times until perhaps 12 days in advance. That’s not such a bad thing when you are getting millions of dollars in rights fees, but we are not in that position, and for us the attendance and the gate is a significant revenue stream.
Simon on the value of public television: Some people believe that you have to be on a sports network to succeed and wonder how you could on public television. But when you get into it, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia are all state-wide network so it’s one call and if you get on the air, you’ve got the whole state. A few years ago, you wouldn’t have done this, but technology improved and allowed it to happen. Public television is wondering how they can get new eyeballs and a new demographic to tune in. I give them a lot of credit of understanding the value of sports on their networks as well as the immediate relationship they now have the schools that are on their home turf.
Iamarino on the broadcast challenges facing smaller schools: The gap has always been there, but the gap is becoming a wide chasm now, it’s getting bigger and bigger. It’s clearly shown that the regional sports network model is going to be more and more difficult for conferences like ours. Two years ago we had a football game in our package that was going to air that got bumped for a Big 12 game, I believe, between Kansas and Iowa St., two schools that you would think wouldn’t have a lot of interest from this part of the country. But the Big 12, when they can command those kinds of rights fees, can demand national distribution. So the only way for Fox Sports to give them that is to utilize their regional networks. But I do think the rest of us, the FCS conferences, as well as the lower FBS conferences are going to have to utilize technology and take advantage of the content to move forward.
NFL.com and multiple media outlets are reporting that the National Football League and NFL Players Association seem to be set to wrap up an offseason of turmoil, with players set to possibly vote today on a 10-year labor agreement. (Thanks guys, by the way, for waiting until I got back from vacation before wrapping it up. I owe you one!) Both sides hammered out final details of the new CBA over the weekend and if the players’ executive committee approves the deal, it will then be voted on by a representative of each team. Although the Hall of Fame game is cancelled, an agreement this week would likely save the rest of the pre-season games. With the NFL’s preseason in disarray, Sports Illustrated’s Peter King reports that the Emmy-winning series Hard Knocks has cancelled its seventh season.
ESPN is gearing up for a long weekend of golf with tournaments flanking the Atlantic, offering coverage of both the Ricoh Women’s British Open and the U.S. Senior Open Championship from July 28-31. The Ricoh Women’s British Open will have 12 scheduled hours of live coverage from Scotland, with three hours of live action from each of the four rounds of the tournament. A one-hour final round highlights show will run on ABC at 4p on Sunday and all live telecasts will be simulcast on ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV. Terry Gannon will anchor. ESPN2 and ESPN3.com will have four hours of live coverage from each of the first two rounds of the U.S. Senior Open Championship out of Toledo with Sean McDonough anchoring the coverage.
ESPN also announced its Big Monday Big 12 men’s college basketball schedule for the season, tipping off on Monday, Jan. 16 with a double header featuring: Texas A&M at Missouri at 5:30p and Baylor at Kansas at 9:30p. The weekly series will then air every Monday during conference play at 9p until February 27. Other games will include Kansas and Texas A&M on January 23, Texas at Texas A&M February 6 and Kansas at Kansas State February 13.
A Friday decision from a federal bankruptcy court judge on Friday shot down the LA Dodgers’ plans to borrow $150 million from a hedge fund, with the judge ordering the club to negotiate cooperatively with MLB for a loan of the same amount, but on better terms. The league’s loan terms are reportedly better with a lower interest rate and fees, and if the team defaults, MLB will not be able to seize Dodger assets.
With about a month left before launch, University of Texas’ Longhorn Network has been forced to suspend plans to run high school football games, pending NCAA investigation. At issue, according to reports, is a challenge from archrival Texas A&M as to whether players who appear in games on the channel will be able to play football for the school Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe confirmed that the conference won’t allow the games until the issue can be better explored.
Texas high school football fans won’t have to search far for games, however. The regional Fox Sports Network channel is locking in a six-hour block of FSN’s Football Friday that will feature a half hour pregame, a three-hour block of highlights and news from as many as 40 games from around the state, a postgame show, a regional roundup and the midnight scoreboard. Fox will incorporate camera crews at several dozen sites for highlights that will air throughout the evening, with fans encouraged to use social media to send in score updates.
The UFC is putting a championship match on cable TV, announcing that UFC Bantamweight Champ Dominick Cruz will face Demetrious Johnson at UFC Live 6 on Versus on Oct. 1. This will mark the first title match on free TV since Quinton Jackson faced Dan Henderson at UFC 75. The promotion also announced that they will once again run prelims specials for upcoming UFC 135 and 136 on Spike TV.
The 2011-12 NBA regular season cable schedule was released last week, provided the season gets underway in time, with TNT opening its schedule on Nov. 1 with a doubleheader featuring NBA champion Dallas Mavericks hosting the Chicago Bulls and the Oklahoma City Thunder versus the L.A. Lakers. All but one of last year’s playoff teams will appear on TNT with the Mavericks, Lakers and Boston Celtics drawing the most attention with 10 scheduled dates. TNT is slated to run 52 games in primetime.
ESPN will begin its NBA season on Nov. 2 with a doubleheader featuring the Heat/Knicks and the Warriors/Lakers. The Heat are scheduled to be featured the most of any NBA team, with 16 appearances over the course of the season. ESPN will showcase 75 games on its various platforms over the season, with ABC running 15 more.
NBA TV will offer up 96 live NBA games during the season, beginning with a Nov. 5 game between the Thunder/Mavericks.
HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg (who I’ve always enjoyed interviewing) is leaving the company after 33 years with the network.
Sponsorship & Promotion
ESPN The Weekend is no longer, a least at Walt Disney World. A post on Disney’s website said that the annual event, which has taken place there since 2004 will be dropped in order to create a year-round presence for the ESPN brand.
The Oklahoma City Thunder have a new home, thanks to a 12-year naming rights deal that we rename their venue as Chesapeake Energy Arena. The deal will pay $3 million next season with increases of 3% every year for the remainder of the term.
Only politics could make the “Miracle on Ice” controversial. Reports say that ABC Sports may deliver presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty with a cease-and-desist letter for improperly using its footage in a political advertisement, citing copyright and exclusive proprietary right violations. Pawlenty used the footage as part of his “The American Comeback” campaign in Iowa on Wednesday.
Digital Fields
It was a groundbreaking week for soccer in social media last week. The Women’s World Cup final between Japan and the United States set the record for tweets per second, scoring 7,196 tweets per second according to Twitter, with Paraguay’s penalty shootout win over Brazil in a Copa America quarterfinal later in the day came challenging those numbers with 7,166. That record is good enough to best even the death of Osama bin Laden in the Twitter-verse. .The Japan/US game scored as the sixth most-watched soccer match on TV ever in the States, drawing nearly 13.5 million TV viewers.
For the first time ever, an FCS conference will have its media day broadcast live on a national platform when the CAA Football Conference holds a two-hour broadcast kickoff event on ESPN3.com on Wednesday. The Media Day will air 10a until noon from Baltimore, Md. and feature each of the league’s head coaches as well as selected student-athletes from around the league. The league is asking fans to submit questions that can be incorporated into the broadcast.
The Main Event
The Atlanta Braves play host to the NL Central-leading Pittsburgh Pirates on ESPN at 7p tonight. Sean McDonough is set to be joined by analysts Rick Sutcliffe and Aaron Boone behind the microphone.
