07.20.09

Good morning. It’s Monday, July 20, 2009, and this is just a reminderEditorial staff on vacation all this week, returning on Monday, July 27!  Have a good week!

While we are off this week, the passing of Walter Cronkite cannot go unnoticed.  Known as the “most trusted man in America,” Cronkite passed away Friday evening at the age of 92.  He anchored the CBS Evening News from 1961 thru 1982, and from him we learned of the assassination and death of President John F. Kennedy, we saw man’s first moon landing (40 years ago today), numerous national conventions, the Watergate scandal, the Civil Rights movement, the war in Vietnam and countless other momentous and not so momentous moments and stories.  In 1973 he described himself in an interview with The Christian Science Monitor as “a news presenter, a news broadcaster, an anchorman, a managing editor – not a commentator or analyst.  I feel no compulsion to be a pundit.”  And yet his impact was tremendous – in 1968 when he described the situation in Vietnam as a stalemate and unwinnable, President Lyndon B. Johnson was quoted to have turned off the television set and declared, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost middle America.”  Washington Post reporter Ben Bradlee credits Cronkite with keep the Watergate story alive.  In a column published in the Washington Post, Bradlee said, “Somehow many other editors felt when Cronkite — the great white father of the American people — said that the Washington Post was right, the story suddenly was worth their attention and coverage.” Affectionately known as Uncle Walter, Cronkite was born in 1916 in St. Joseph, Missouri.  He moved to Houston as a teenager, and attended the University of Texas at Austin.  He dropped out of college to become a radio announcer in 1935. He later moved on to KCMO in Kansas City, and soon thereafter married Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Maxwell in 1940.  While in Kansas City,  Cronkite worked as part of the United Press and in that capacity covered the Nuremberg Trials, World War II and Soviet Russia. To quote the great man himself, “And that’s the way it is.”

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

Jon Goodman is returning to television in the sitcom pilot The Station, a single-camera comedy produced by Ben Stiller for FOX. 20th Century TV is the production company behind this project about CIA operatives in Central America on a secret mission to install a new dictator. Goodman will play a CIA veteran who mentors the lead CIA agent played by Justin Bartha. Goodman will also appear in the upcoming HBO Films’ You Don’t Know Jack with Al Pacino and Susan Sarandon.

Actress Jorja Fox is rejoining the cast of CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as Sara Sidle, cites the AP. Fox left the drama two years ago and will be a part of the CSI: CI’s tenth season premiere opening September 24 and other following episodes.

CBS tapped Sarah Carter to join the cast of CSI: NY as a regular. Carter will portray a 20-something forensic school graduate with ambition to be become a crime scene clean up technician. Carter was last seen on two seasons of CBS’ Shark.

Futurama, debuting with new episodes in mid-2010 on Comedy Central, may have a whole new cast of actors voicing the animated characters. 20th Century TV, the series’ production company, is moving forward with auditioning new actors after not reaching an agreement with the existing cast based on their increased salary demands. The original voice cast included John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tress MacNeille and Katey Sagal. 20th Century approached the original cast members following last month’s deal where Comedy Central picked up the series with 26 new episodes.

Casting Call:   FOX is conducting a worldwide open call online to cast two characters for its upcoming 2010 comedy, Sons of Tucson. The plot is about a charming con man named Ron who is hired by three brothers to act as their father while their real one is serving prison time for a white collar crime. Specifically, FOX is looking to cast two of the brothers. Kids and teens, with or without acting experience are invited to upload their audition videos online through July 24 at http://www.sonsoftucsonopencall.com . The show’s Los Angeles-based casting directors will review each audition video and contact those they are interested in. Details on the two brother characters “Robby” and “Brandon” are as follows:

  • Robby – (8 years old) is the youngest Gunderson sibling. He’s an impish and impulsive grade-schooler who needs Ron to bail him out when he accidently starts a fire at the back-to-school fair. It’s partially for this reason that the Gundersons hire Ron full-time to pose as their dad.
  • Brandon – (13-15 years old) is the oldest of the Gunderson boys. He views life and the family’s current situation through a somewhat warped lens. Energetic and upbeat, his eccentricity is charming at times, but his efforts to help his brothers often land them in hot water. He possesses terrific self confidence that is completely unearned.
