Cynopsis: Kids!

07/13/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, July 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

101 Dalmatians: The Musical kicks off its nationwide tour beginning in Minneapolis this October 2009 and concluding in LA in June 2010.  Based on author Dodie (Dorothy) Smith’s 1956 novel The One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the family-targeted musical is directed by the celebrated Jerry Zaks and features a score by singer/songwriter/musician and founding STYK band-member Dennis DeYoung and a book by writer/lyricist/director BT McNicholl (resident director Billy Elliot/Broadway). The musical, which will include a three week run in NYC at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden in April 2010, will feature actors dressed as Dalmatians as well as 15 or so actual Dalmatians that will be trained by veteran animal trainer Joel Slaven (Ace Ventura Pet Detective, That Darn Cat and Rain Maker, as well as many stage shows etc).  101 Dalmatians: The Musical is produced by Magic Arts & Entertainment/Tix Productions, Troika Entertainment, and Luis Alvarez.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Hong Kong Phooey, number one super guy.  Alcon Entertainment‘s mixed live-action/CGI animated adaptation of Hanna-Barbera‘s animated series Hong Kong Phooey will be directed by Alex Zamm with David Goodman (exec. producer/writer Family Guy) joining to pen the script, per Variety.  Producing the movie version of one of my favorite cartoons is Alcon’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove with Rat Entertainment‘s Brett Ratner and Jay Stern.  Hong Kong Phooey, quicker than the human eye.

After a long search Warner Bros. seems to have found its Green Lantern in Ryan Reynolds, per THR.  With a deal in the works, Ryan Reynolds will star as the Green Lantern in the studio’s new live-action movie adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern, directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and produced by Donald De line and Greg Berlanti.  Slated to begin production at the start of 2010, the screenplay is penned by Berlanti along with Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim.  Other actors who had been considered for the role include Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto and Justin Timberlake.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate, Inez Moore Tenenbaum officially becomes the 9th Chairman of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  Her term expires in October 2013. Tenenbaum intends to focus on three primary areas during her term: accessibility and transparency: searchable database of incident reports. This is inviting consumers in; education and advocacy: inform consumers about product hazards. This is pushing info out; enforcing the law and keeping dangerous imported products off the shelves and out of the hands of consumers.  Tenenbaum was previously South Carolina’s State Superintendent of Education (1998-2007).  In this role she created a stir in 2005 for having author Chris Crutcher’s young adult novel Whale Talk removed from the South Carolina Education Department’s high school curriculum due to profanity included in the book.  This was not the only state where the inclusion of the title in schools was debated.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   Who am I?  I can talk and so let me tell you about my phobias.  I have a fear of water, fat men with whiskers, cockatoos, cats, prowlers, wooden carousel horses and heights.  Who am I?   MR. ED  Kudos to:  Alex Vassilio-MTV Networks/NY; Chip Beaman-Soundelux Design Music/Hollywood

Today’s Trivia Question:   Aunt Helen and Uncle Junior ran the family hotel -King’s Tower Hotel – along with Fancy, Braxton and the title character of what show?  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
