Good morning, it’s Monday, July 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

The biggest story to come out of Allen & Co’s star-studded media conference in Sun Valley over the weekend was that News Corp. plans to remake MySpace into an entertainment portal, courtesy of Rupert’s WSJ. Once the hottest social networking portal on the planet, MySpace has struggled over the past year to retain its users and managers. MySpace Music – its attempt at creating a comprehensive, U.S.-based major label music portal – has attracted a sizeable audience but not much of a return for its investors, according to reports. Meanwhile News Corp. is “unlikely” to build its own e-reader but the company is working with other manufacturers to speed development of the devices, according to comments made by Mr. Murdoch in an interview with Fox Business Network last week.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
PBS announced an agreement with Hispanic news and information service impreMedia to live stream PBS’ NewsHour feed of Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s Senate confirmation hearings on impreMedia’s Web site expected to begin July 13, 2009 at 10 am ET., translated to Spanish. Live streaming of the hearings is also available online at newshour.pbs.org, provided in conjunction with NPR and PBS. If confirmed, Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic U.S. Supreme Court justice and the third woman to serve on the high court.
 
Hearst’s Albuquerque-based broadcaster KOAT 7 announced plans to launch LBI Media’s 24-hour Spanish language network Estrella TV as a digital multicast channel on KOAT-TV in Albuquerque, KOCT-TV in Carlsbad and KOVT-TV in Silver City, NM.
 
A&E has updated its minisite to coincide with the premiere of season 2 of The Cleaner, based on the life of interventionist Warren Boyd. New content includes a behind-the-scenes video diary from star Esteban Powell as well as the thanks-william social dedication feature, allowing users to send notes to friends via social media sites who have influenced their lives in a positive way.

Fresh on the heels of working to renegotiate its royalties agreement with the music industry, online radio site Pandora has raised $35 million in a new funding round led by Greylock Partners, per PE Hub. As part of a new monetization strategy Pandora will begin charging a small fee to users who listen to more than 40 hours of music per month.
 
Drew Massey, founder of shuttered online video portal ManiaTV, is making another go of it buying back the brand and a portion of its content for “small fraction” of the $26 million the company had raised from venture capitalists, per the NYTimes. He plans to run a much leaner operation this time around and has attracted a couple of big names to join the ManiaTV board including Canoe Venture CEO David Verklin and former NBC Entertainment Chief Warren Littlefield.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Microsoft launched the third version of its online video/rich media software platform Silverlight, promising smoother operation on multiple browsers and operating systems. The new version is designed to support higher quality audio and video for Intel-based Macs, including native H.264/Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) Audio, live and on-demand “Smooth Streaming” – as demonstrated by NBC Sports during its coverage of Wimbledon – and full HD 1080p playback over standard Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Silverlight’s improved architecture also promises to reduce the number of severs needed to stream live events.
 
Envivio is also ready with an encoding and DRM-protected distribution solution optimized for Microsoft Silverlight 3. Envivio introduced its iLiveTV encoding and distribution platform the iPhone 3.0 OS in June.
 
Seattle-based online video streaming and services company Delve Networks is launching a self-service video platform sporting a simple drag-and-drop interface. The idea is to offer a basic suite of services including content management, ingestion, encoding, analytics and content delivery that small publishers can access and pay for online with a credit card. Pricing begins at $299/month.

Fans of HBO‘s Entourage can enter their friends in the Make A Friend Famous contest on Facebook, powered by Deep Focus. You play an Ari in training as the app encourages you to hit up your friends as potential clients and have them fill out a short profile with video, pics and info about what makes them special. Facebook users can vote up to 5 times a day to see who gets their mug on a custom made billboard in LA as well as an all-expenses-paid trip out to see it.

Twitter has hired Alexander Macgillivray, Deputy General Counsel for Products and Intellectual Property at Google, to serve as the company’s General Counsel, reports the NYTimes.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Still not over the death of Michael Jackson? Leave a cathartic video of yourself, your child, dog, avatar or significant other Eternally Moonwalking from right to left across the frame. Videos submitted from around the world are selected randomly and streamed in a continuous, endless loop. Each video is numbered and labeled by name and locale. No matter how long you watch, no one comes close to Michael in the Moonwalking department but that’s not really the point. (Note – you may want to turn down the volume on your PC as the looping snippet from Billy Jean gets a bit monotonous.) The collaborative site is the work of the radio station Studio Brussels in Belgium.
