FX’s Damages is popular across the pond as BBC1 bought the rights to the 13-episode season two of the legal thriller starring Glenn Close, reported THR. The series, distributed by Sony, attracted an average audience of 2 million viewers in its Monday at 1035p time period and is also available on iPlayer, BBC’s interactive seven-day catch up service.

Going into overtime, NBC Sport’s Wild Card Playoff game last Saturday night posted an 18.3/30 in the overnights from 815-1145p while peaking during overtime with a 21.6/37 at 1130p. The Colts-Chargers game also earned NBC a 17.3/28 during regular primetime hours of 8-11p.

ABC Family‘s original series Kyle XY will open the first episode of season three via the online site Fancast today airing it exclusively through January 11, according to Multichannel News. The series makes its debut on the network January 12 at 9p.  In addition, Fancast, created by Comcast Interactive Media, will offer viewers other exclusive content including an online chat with star Matt Dallas today at 4p PT/7p ET.

Actor Bernie Hamilton, 80, died last Tuesday night of cardiac arrest at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Hamilton was best known for his role as the practical Capt. Harold Dobey in the 1970s ABC police series Starsky and Hutch. During his career, Hamilton appeared in more than 20 feature films as well as guest roles on several television series before becoming a regular on Starsky and Hutch. Following his stint on Starsky and Hutch, Hamilton moved to the music industry where he produced R&B and gospel records for 20 years under the label Chocolate Snowman.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

After months of anticipation and speculation, BBC selected British actor Matt Smith as the new Time Lord on the Doctor Who series. Smith, who at 26 is the youngest actor to play this role, takes over from David Tennant when production begins this summer and a new full season opens in the U.K. on BBC in 2010. Tennant will still star in four Doctor Who specials this year.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Reports continue to trickle in speculating that CES 2009 (Jan. 8-11) will struggle to reach its usual attendance numbers this year due to severe cutbacks in travel and exhibition budgets. The Consumer Electronics Association is now estimating 130,000 attendees for the event – down from 140,000 last year – but many analysts expect an even more dramatic drop off. Accordingly, affordable gadgets such as netbooks (sub $500 laptops) are expected to be a focus, as well as futuristic technologies such as home 3-D video. This year’s all star keynote line-up of speakers includes Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer and Intel Chairman Craig Barrett. CES will also mark FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s last convention appearance. He will join CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro again in a one-on-one discussion about the upcoming digital television transition, cable compatibility and the state of the broadband industry.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Bratz dolls will be able to remain on store shelves through 2009.  A US federal judge has given MGA Entertainment a stay of sorts, asking MGA and Mattel to come up with a proposal under which the dolls can continue to be manufactured and sold through the year, per the LA Times.  Under the original ruling, MGA would have had to pull the dolls from shelves as of February 11, 2009.  The judge made this new modified ruling “to address the concerns regarding the 2009 retail buying season.”   In 2008 Mattel sued and won a copyright infringement against MGA Entertainment concerning the Bratz dolls.
