MSNBC BEATS CNN IN 2009

After months of tense negotiations and going past a December 31 deadline, News Corp. and Time Warner Cable hammered out a retransmission consent deal in principal on New Year’s Day. The agreement keeps the Fox networks on TWC’s 13 million homes and on two million additional homes served by Bright House Networks. Terms of the deal were not revealed though originally News Corp. was asking for approximately $1 per subscriber for the Fox-owned broadcast stations while TWC countered with an offer of around 35 cents per subscriber. The culmination of a New Year’s deal also allowed TWC’s customers to view the college bowl games uninterrupted.
Following the TWC-News Corp. agreement to keep Fox-owned networks on the air, Scripps Networks Interactive took its Food Network and HGTV off of Cablevision systems in New York, Long Island and the Tri-State area as of midnight on January 1. In this region, about three million viewers were affected because the two companies could not come to terms over distribution fees. Scripps Networks is seeking what the company equates to a “modest increase” over its less than 25 cents per subscriber it currently receives for both Food Network and HGTV combined.
During the holiday break, Comedy Central cancelled The Jeff Dunham Show after only one season, despite the premiere episode being the most-watched series debut in the network’s history. The Jeff Dunham Show, starring comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham, opened in October with 5.3 million viewers though viewership dropped by -55% for the second episode and later episodes in December attracted around 1.3 and 1.8 million viewers. Dunham continues to have an overall deal with Comedy Central, giving him a headlining special on the network scheduled to air fall 2010 in addition to a tour, a DVD and a consumer products release.
Tyra Banks announced this current season of her syndicated talk show The Tyra Show, produced by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution will be the last. The Tyra Show is in its fifth season. In a recent article in People magazine, Banks will concentrate on the opening of Bankable Studios, a film production company located in New York with the mission to bring “positive images of women to the big screen.”
Regis Philbin, host of the daytime talk show Live! With Regis and Kelly, returns to his post today after his successful hip replacement surgery on December 1. A variety of guest hosts has been filling in during the 78-year old host’s absence.
Golf Channel unveils today a newly revamped studio in Orlando starting with the network’s program Golf Central, per Multichannel News. Golf Channel’s new studio also coincides with the network’s full hi-def production capabilities for its studio shows. Reaching 82 million homes in the US, Golf Channel also reaches an additional 40 million worldwide.
From now on, actor Patrick Stewart can be referred to as Sir Patrick Stewart. At midnight on December 31, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth recognized Stewart, former star of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation and the X-Men movies with a knighthood for his distinguished service to his country.
