Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 28, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Imagi Studios’ has inked a deal with director David Bowers (Flushed Away) to helm it’s CG animated movie adaptation of AstroBoy.  Slated to be release by Warner Bros. and The Weinstein Co. in 2009, Bowers takes over the reins for Astro Boy from Colin Brady (Everyone’s Hero), who had originally been named as director.  Bowers has worked on feature films for Cosgrove Hall, Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation, DreamWorks and Aardman.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Anime director/writer Hayao Miyazaki’s (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle) new movie, Ponyo on a Cliff (in Japanese, Gake no ue no Ponyo) is scheduled for a July 2008 release, per Variety.  More information about the movie and its release is expected from Studio Ghibli at the Tokyo International Anime Fair, March 27-30, 2008.  The movie, which revolves around Ponyo, a goldfish princess who wants to be a human, and her relationship with a five-year-old boy, will underline the importance of the parent-child relationship according to the report.  The movie will be based on watercolors done by the director, and will not feature any CG animation.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The new Taiwanese Disney Channel@Play will be the Disney Channel‘s first broadband foray into Asia/Pacific.  The channel will stream episodes of animated and live-action series, offering them with Mandarin-language dubbing and Chinese-language subtitles.  The site, www.disney.com/tw/DisneyChannel/video/, will be refreshed on a weekly basis.

9 Story Entertainment, Canadian based producer/distributor, completes deals for its 2D animated special, If The World Were A Village with SBTV Programming Int’l (Brazil), Fire The Imagination (Canada), Visual Education Centre (Canada), Teleview (the Middle East), Innoform (Singapore,) RTP (Portugal), and Noga Communications (Israel).

DIC Entertainment will be here at NATPE this week in Las Vegas with offering kid’s programs including two new original animated series Dino Squad (26×30 or 52×11), the series is created by DIC, and Sushi Pack (26×30 or 52×11), a co-production between DIC and American Greetings Properties.  Both series currently air as part of the Saturday morning KEWLopolis on CBS programming block.

Real Life 101, the teen-targeted series produced/distributed by the Television Syndication Company (TVS), has reached a TV milestone with the production of its 100th episode.  The 8th season of Real Life 101, rated educational/informational (E/I), is slated to bow in fall 2008, with clearance in 80+% of the country.  TVS’s other weekly E/I youth series include Kid Guides, Ultimate Choice, What’s Up! Que Pasa, and its new series Jane’s Sew and So.  Jane’s Sew and So aims to teach teens how to design and sew their own creations.  TVS will showcase these and its roster of other shows this week at NATPE.

Aardman Animations has completed a deal in with iTunes in the UK.  Under the agreement consumers can download episodes Aardman’s properties for about US$3.75, including Wallace and Gromit specials A Close Shave, The Wrong Trousers and A Grand Day Out, as well as the 9 Wallace and Gromit short films Cracking Contraptions, Angry Kid (25×1), Rex the Runt (13×10), The Pearce Sisters (1×9).

MARKETING/LICENSING

MGM Consumer Products has appointed Big Tent Entertainment as the licensing agent for Argentina and Chile.  Under the deal Big Tent will oversee MGM Consumer Products’ portfolio of properties, including brands like Pink Panther, Rocky, Robocop and the third party property, Highlander, with a focus on licensing categories such as apparel, accessories, plush, stationery, as well as identifying new promotional partners in the region.   Alejandra Denda Hampton, Big Tent’s Managing Director, Latin America and Hispanic, will head up the new effort.

VIZ Media has begun offering three of its animated action series for download via Amazon Unbox, Amazon’s digital download service.  Fans can now download episodes ($1.99 each) of Naruto Uncut (episodes 1-25 dubbed), Death Note (full series dubbed) and Bleach (episodes 1-25 dubbed), all three properties are rated for teens and young adults.  One free episode of each series can be downloaded now through January 31, 2008.

Fifty years ago today (at 1:58p to be exact) the patent was filed for the LEGO brick.  To celebrate the LEGO Group will release two commemorative products, with various programs and activities slated to rollout throughout the year, including a competition for kids, with info available in the next LEGO Club Magazine or at www.lego.com/Club in March.  The company reports that there are 62 LEGO bricks for every person on the planet, and I can safely say that I have personally stepped on more than my family’s share of bricks. 

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sorpresa names Samantha Brown as Sr. Director/Western Division Affiliate Relations and Yvette Sanchez as Programming Manager.  Brown will expand Sorpresa’s affiliate base in West Coast markets, as well as strengthen distribution via existing affiliates.  Brown has held executive positions in affiliate sales and marketing for a various networks, she most recently served as a consultant for E! Entertainment Networks’ Business and Legal Department.  Based in LA, Brown will report to Tim Kelly VP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing.  Sanchez will increase original programming efforts and co-production opportunities for the network and digital community.  Sanchez joins the network from Discovery Communications Latin America. She will be based in Miami and report to Maria Badillo, VP/Programming.

Dr. Paul Folkemer has been named as SVP/Director of Education, Channel One Network.  Folkemer will develop Channel One’s educational standards-based curriculum.  In addition to serving as a teacher and administrator in several US school districts, Folkemer has also been a national spokesperson for Channel One’s new broadcast and was key in the launch of www.channelonenetwork.com. Folkemer was a co-founder of the Student Television Network, co-authored Media Mastery, and is currently National Chairman of the Board of Directors for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
