Good morning. It’s Monday, January 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. Cynopsis is closed today in recognition of Martin Luther King Day, though you can probably reach any of us via email. Here is an abbreviated edition – we’ll be back with a full edition tomorrow.

Channel One will provide its own special coverage of the Presidential Inauguration to middle and high school teachers and students tomorrow, Tuesday, January 20.  Channel One will offer its special edition Inaugural Day following President-elect Barack Obama’s Inaugural address and acceptance into office.  The Inaugural program will be available to educators in Channel One Network schools beginning on Tuesday at 2:30p and will remain available through May 31, 2009.  The special is in addition to the network’s regularly scheduled morning broadcast for that morning.  Additionally, on Wednesday, January 21, Channel One News will dedicate its entire 12-minute program to the Inauguration.

Actor George Takei, best known as Sulu from the original Star Trek TV series, will be featured in an episode of Lucasfilm Animation‘s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which will debut on Cartoon Network Friday, January 23 at 9p.  Takei lends his voice to the veil Neimoidian general Lok Durd in a special episode titled Defenders of Peace.

PBS Kids will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a new episode of WordWorld, a special hour of Clifford The Big Red Dog and themed episodes other PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go shows on Friday, February 13 (check local listings).  Meanwhile, online www.pbsparents.org will feature holiday craft projects, e-cards and recipes for kid to make with adults, as well as features on poetry and expressing feelings.  A new Valentine’s Day themed video playlist will also be available on the PBS Kids Go! video player.

Girl Ambition, a new interactive social community aimed at tween girls up to 13 launches.  A sort of Facebook for the tween girl crowd, Girl Ambition is designed as a safe and positive place for tween girls to go and take part in online and offline activities (videos, contests, IM, email, webisodes) and learn about online safety and the like.  Founded by three moms, the site also offers resources for parents, which includes parental controls and advice from experts.  Girl Ambition is a subscription-based site ($4.99/month or $49.90/year), which will feature sponsored events, with advertising to be sold in the parent’s section of the site.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Mattel, Inc. grows its family game library with the acquisition of Sekkoia SAS, which owns the game Blokus and the Blokus family of games, as well as acquiring the rights to the classic Whac-A-Mole game from Bob’s Space Racers, Inc.  Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Decca Broadway will release the original cast recording of the Broadway show Shrek The Musical this March.  The DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions, Shrek The Musical opened at the Broadway Theater in NYC on December 14, 2008, and features music composed by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, and is directed by Jason Moore.  Decca Broadway is a unit of the Decca Label Group.

Columbia Records and Nickelodeon will release the soundtrack to the network’s original primetime TV movie Spectacular! on Tuesday, February 3, 2009.  The release coincides with the premiere of Spectacular! on Monday, February 16 (8-10p).

Game company, INI, LLC, introduces its new teen-targeted edition of its board game, I’ve Never … The Outrageous Game of Truth, at the 2009 Toy Fair next month in NYC.
