Good morning. It’s Monday, January 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. Today may be a “snow day” for those of us in Connecticut, so while the office may be closed, everyone at Cynopsis is always reachable via email.  And the email is always the same – [email protected].

CondeNet is making changes to its teen girl targeted website, Flip.com, in an effort to increase its audience.  Initially launched in winter 2007 as a stand-alone social networking website, CondeNet plans to shift Flip.com to be an ad-supported web application that will live on other social networking platforms.  Flip.com will make its first foray as a distributed application on Facebook.  CondeNet, the web division of Conde Nast, was one of the early partners for Facebook’s application program.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon is set to premiere its new Nick Jr. animated Mandarin-language preschool series Ni Hao, Kai-lan (20 episodes), on Thursday, February 7, at 11a, the first day of the Chinese New Year.  Nick Jr. will also roll out six new episodes weekdays from February 8-15, with the series airing regularly weekdays at 11a.  Sneak peeks of Ni Hao, Kai-lan will be available from Monday, January 28, across Nick’s preschool platforms including a full episode, music video and clips on: VOD on Comcast, Charter, Cablevision, Verizon FiOS and Cox; iTunes; Nick Jr. Video on Nickjr.com; and various wireless carriers.  Designed to introduce the Chinese (Mandarin) language and culture to preschoolers, Ni Hao, Kai-lan is told through Kai-lan, a 5-year-old Chinese-American girl.  Created by Karen Chau and Executive Produced by Mary Harrington, animation production for Ni Hao, Kai-lan is being produced in conjunction with Wang Films and Wang Studio in Greater China.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing and Ball State University have entered into a three-year exclusive partnership to provide students in schools nationwide with the opportunity to interact with S&S authors and illustrators via live, interactive web broadcasts called “Electronic Author Visits” (EAV).  The EAVs employ BSU’s MyVisit virtual classroom’s Electronic Field Trips program, which allow for live video, discussion forums, and downloadable teacher information and in-class activities.  Under the deal, S&S plans to host three EAVs per year, with author Andrew Clements (Frindle and No Talking) kicking off the program on March 18.  Also signing on to participate in EAV are D.J. MacHale (the Pendragon series) and Margaret Peterson Haddix (Shadow Children).  Booksource has signed on as the sponsoring book supplier.

Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) has been appointed as licensing agents for the UK and Europe for the new animated series Horrid Henry.  Produced by Novel Entertainment, Horrid Henry is based on the Orion Books K5-8 targeted book series (25+ book and audio titles) of the same name created by Francesca Simon and illustrated by Ton Ross.  Copyright Promotions will manage all aspects of merchandise & promotional licensing in the UK and Europe, with the exception of publishing, which will continue to be managed by Orion.

American Greetings Corporation enters into a licensing deal with Muhammad Ali Enterprises LLC to create a new greeting card line featuring images and quotes of the boxer.  Slated to debut January 21, just ahead of Black History Month (February), the new line will launch with eight cards (birthday, thinking of you and anytime designs).  Products featuring sound bytes of Ali’s famous quotes, including cards and holiday ornaments, are scheduled to be available at retail in 2008 and 2009.
