CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

02/27/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 27, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Behind the perpetual expression of abject fear, the nervous demeanor, the shaky voice that spoke of limited self-assurance and low self-esteem, the diminutive Don Knotts also projected as a man with a big heart and a fantastic sense of timing and humor.  The Emmy-award winning actor who died on Friday at the age of 81, seemed to have been drawn by Norman Rockwell as a representation of the man from the heartland of America and today most kids know him only as a character on Scooby Doo or for his voice work on other animated projects including last year’s Chicken Little.  Knotts is best known by the Nick at Night and TV Land generation who will forever know him as both Barney Fife of the Andy Griffith Show and as Mr. Ralph Furley on Three’s Company.  I have often told my kids and their friends that Don Knotts is truly one of the great physical comedians and before there were any the names of today there was Don Knotts.  And so, next weekend whether they like it or not, my kids and their friends will sit with me and watch two of my favorite Don Knotts movies; The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964) and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966. Okay maybe I’ll make them watch The Reluctant Astronaut” (1967) and The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968) too.

With Singapore’s iconic Merlion statue adorned in a pair of sunglasses, MTV Networks Asia and the Singapore Tourism Board revealed they have entered into a $50 million four-year agreement to bring a series of programming events to the region beginning this year.  Among the shows included are various branded events as well as specials developed specifically for the Asian-Pacific audience.  Shows included under the agreement include MTV Asia Awards 2007, MTV Asia Music Awards, Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards Asia and the MTV Centerstage, Nickelodeon Musical 2007, MTV Gig Guide and the MTV Fashionably Loud.  For the Singapore Tourism Board the goal of the joint effort is to help give Singapore an extra hip factor shine, while also boosting its image as an entertainment hub of the region.  Additionally, the Tourism Board predicts that the events will attract 150,000 tourists who will spend a predicted $100 million over the course of the deal as well as create 3,400 temporary jobs.

TAG Entertainment Corp., a producer/distributor of family-targeted movies, has terminated its negotiations to acquire Myriad Pictures, Inc.  According to TAG’s Chairman/CEO, Steve Austin, Myriad Pictures will continue to act as a sales agent for the international release of two of its movies.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The upcoming movie version of Where the Wild Things Are will feature Catherine Keener as young Max’s mother.  The actress, currently up for an Oscar for her role as Harper Lee in Capote, announced this bit of info during an interview with Charlie Rose, according to the Better Than Fudge blog.  Based on Maurice Sendak’s classic kid’s book of the same name, the movie will be directed by Spike Jonze and will feature humans and “wild things” created by the folks at The Henson Company.

Eve Myles has been cast in Torchwood, a BBC Three spin-off of the series Doctor Who.  Myles will play Gwen, a character she portrayed in an episode of Doctor Who last year.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Canada will get a taste of High School Musical when Disney Channel’s Original Movie bows on the Family Channel, March 10 at 730p.  The premiere will be followed by the Karaoke encore play of the movie on March 12 at noon.  The soundtrack will be release in Canada on March 7 in advance of the movie.

Singing their way through the show was Fonzie, Potsie, Richie, and Mr. and Mrs. C in the  Happy Days musical, which had its official opening Friday night in LA.  While there is really only one Fonz, the musical stars Joey “New Kids on the Block” McIntyre as the singing version of Arthur Fonzarelli, ayeeeeeeeee.  The Happy Days musical was staged by Garry Marshall, the creator and producer of the TV series, produced by Marshall’s daughter Kathleen Marshall, and features music/lyrics by Paul Williams.  To answer the question that was likely going to keep you up tonight, Pinky Tuscadero is indeed part of the musical!  But what about Leather Tuscadero?

With the most recent success that movies such as Hairspray, Beauty and the Beast and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels have enjoyed moving from the big screen to the musical theater stage, it isn’t a shock that other movies are venturing down the same path, while some travel from book-to-screen-to stage.  Among the new shows are:

  • Billy Elliot The Musical, book/lyrics by Lee Hall, music by Elton John, took home four awards last night at the 30th annual Laurence Olivier Awards in London, including as Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Musical awarded to all three of the young actors who created the role of Billy on stage
  • A musical adaptation of Tim Burton’s feature film, Edward Scissorhands, is currently on tour in the UK with plans to head to the US.  The show contains much of Danny Elfman’s original score from the movie as well as new original music composed and arranged based on Elfman’s themes by Terry Davies, who adapted the show for the stage.
  • Mary Poppins, a Disney and Cameron Mackintosh co-production of an Julian Fellows adaptation of P.L. Travers original book (1934), opened in London’s West End last year and premieres on Broadway October 16, 2006
  • Tarzan – The Broadway Musical, the Disney show features music/lyrics by Phil Collins and book by David Henry Hwang, and is set to premiere in NYC on May 10.
  • The much discussed $27 million musical adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings premiered earlier this month in Toronto (about 3 and a half hours long).

MARKETING/LICENSING

The first New York Comic Con was held over the weekend at the Jacob Javits center in New York City, the first big comic convention held in the city in over a decade.  The show opened on Friday for trade and press only, until about 4p that afternoon when the public was welcome.  The throngs of attendees were so huge that the show organizers, Reed Exhibitions, had to stop letting people in for periods of time and eventually put off ticket sales for some time as well.  But this sort of crowd has become a regular occurrence at comic conventions with a similar temporary shut-done of admittance at Wonder Con in San Francisco several weeks ago.  In addition to filled-to-capacity panel sessions, there was discussion of Spidey’s new look, celebrity appearances and costumed superheroes, and discussion of which characters would appear in which upcoming comic book releases.  Among what might be considered the most unlikely celebrity appearances was Gloria Steinem who was there to promote a new comic called Carrie Giver, which features a superhero with ESP powers who astral projects, and defends Moms and caregivers from the evils of the world.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Author Tamora Pierce has inked an exclusive deal with Marvel Comics.  Pierce’s first project at Marvel will be to revisit the White Tiger project and develop a way to link it to the original Tiger property including creating a new female heroine, which will feature artwork created by David Mack.   White Tiger had its initial introduction in Brian Michael Bendis’ Daredevil.  Pierce has penned 20+ sci-fi and fantasy novels targeted to young female readers,
