Cynopsis: Kids!

02/11/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Dizzywood, a K8-12 targeted virtual world and online gaming platform, secures $1 million in financing.  Shelby Bonnie led this round of financing, with additional investments by Charles River Ventures among others.  The new capital will be used to further develop and expend content on the site.  Dizzywood was co-founded by Scott Arpajian, formerly SVP/CNET Download.com, Sean Uberoi Kelly, a co-founder of Wallop, and Ken Marden, a noted game designer and kid’s book author.  Launched in November 2007, Dizzywood is a free site, with subscriptions expected to be available access premium content in the future.

Conde Nast Bridal Media officially re-launches YourProml.com, a companion website to its Your Prom magazine.  The site, which has been in Beta testing since December, includes a range of features such as a dressfinder, with 800 different dresses, a prom personality quiz, a slideshow from Bravo TV’s Project Runway Prom Design Challenge, prom videos from YouTube, user generated iMixes, a special Quinceanera area, exclusive videos including footage of the French band the Plastiscines, local information and various giveaways.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Eloise knows what every gal needs to pack for a trip to Paris, ” … you have to take EVERYTHING,” which includes her turtle, dog and Nanny.  And speaking of Nanny, Uma Thurman joins the cast of the upcoming live-action movie adaptation of Eloise in Paris, as Nanny, per Variety.  Based on the book, Eloise in Paris, penned by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hillary Knight, the movie begins production this summer.  Directed by Charles Shyer, Eloise in Paris is produced by Handmade Films, which hopes to make this the first in a series of Eloise movies.  The title role has not been cast.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Facebook launches the Spanish-language version of its online social network, which was created with the help of some 1,500 Spanish-speaking Facebook users over the course of less than four weeks.  I don’t know how you say WOW in Spanish, but WOW.  Beginning today, anyone who visits the site from a Spanish-speaking country will see the site in Spanish.  Facebook reports that it has 2.8+ million active users in Latin America and Spain, and no doubt lots of those are kids, tweens and teens.  Overall Facebook says that 60+% of its users are now outside the US.  So it won’t come as a surprise that Facebook plans to launch French and German versions of the site in the coming weeks.

The South Australian Government joins the worldwide assault on childhood obesity, as it threatens to impose a ban on junk food ads during kid’s TV programming, if the industry there does not agree to a voluntary ban on such advertising.

Aardman Animation completes a new raft of license deals for its stop-motion animated kids series Shaun the Sheep:

  • Broadcast rights pacts the property include Teletoon (Canada), RAI (Italy), RTE (Eire), RUV (Iceland), RTV (Bosnia and Herzegovina), FOX TV (Serbia), Slovak TV (Slovakia), LRT (Lithuania), TV3 (Latvia), RTV (Slovenia), MBC 3 and Emirates Cable TV 9middle East), RTP2 (Portugal) and EBS (Korea).
  • Video rights deals for the series have been completed for the US and Canada with Hit Entertainment, as well as with KBS (Korea), Media Way (Poland) and LNK (Portugal), as well as deals with Concorde (Germany), CNR/Tabtoo (the Netherlands) and Grand Entertainment (Croatia).
  • A merchandise and promotional rights agreement has been inked with Biplano Licensing (Spain and Portugal).

CYNOPSIS KIDS GOES TO KIDSCREEN SUMMIT  –  Leading into this week’s conference …

Portfolio Entertainment’s completes series renewals in Belgium and Israel for its series Carl SquaredVRT (Belgium) has picked up seasons three and four (26×30) for the animated tween-targeted series for broadcast in Dutch-speaking Belgium, while Noga (Israel) takes season (13×30) of the series.  Carl Squared is produced and distributed by Portfolio Entertainment (www.carl2.com)

Shaftesbury Films inks a license deal for its live-action series Life with Derek with Grosset & Dunlap, a unit of Penguin Young Readers Group.  Under the agreement, brokered by JTMG, Grosset & Dunlap will publish its first Life with Derek novel in North America for summer 2008.  Created by Daphne Ballon and commissioned by The Family Channel (Canada), Life with Derek (70×30) is produced by Shaftesbury Films and distributed internationally by Shaftesbury Sales Company.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Madame Alexander and ABC/ABC Studios are introducing a line of Ugly Betty dolls, based on the TV series, which is based on the Columbian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Vea.  The first dolls include an 18-inch Ugly Betty (Betty Suarez) as well as an 8-inch vinyl replica of that one.

It’s a good week for Tron fans. Disney Interactive Studios will release Discs of Tron, the second arcade game based on the movie Tron, this Wednesday, February 13 for Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360.  The new game features a 3D arena to go up against the bad guy (Sark), and features classic and enhanced modes as well as multiplayer modes.  Developed by Backbone Entertainment, Discos of Tron carries an ESRB rating of E for Everyone.  FYI, the original Tron arcade game is now available on Xbox Live Arcade.

This week marks 2K Play, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, and Nickelodeon release of the game title Go, Diego, Go!: Safari Rescue for Nintendo Wii and Playstation 2 in North America.  The game is 2K Play’s first week game designed specifically for preschoolers, with Nickelodeon’s research.

Douglas Company, a manufacturer of stuffed animals, will showcase its newest group of birds, among other products, at the upcoming International Toy Fair 2008 in New York, February 17-20, 2008.  The plush birds include, Hally the hawk, Lil’ Phantom the Snowy Owl, Wise guy the Great Horned Owl, Stripes the Humboldt Penguin, Regal the 15″ tall Egret and king the 14″ Blue Heron.  The birds all feature textured fabrics and colors to increase a realistic look.
