Good morning. It’s Monday, December 8, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Remember earlier this fall when a US judge found in favor of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. in their copyright case against RDR Books and author Steven Vander Ark, which planned to publish a reference book titled The Harry Potter Lexicon? Well, RDR had recently filed an appeal in the case, but as of Friday has withdrawn it and announced plans to publish a book titled The Lexicon: An Unauthorized Guide to Harry Potter Fiction and Related Materials on January 12, according to Publishers Weekly. Written by Vander Ark, the new title was created using the guidelines set out by the judge in his opinion that would avoid any copyright infringements, and will include content from Vander Ark’s website as well as new content and a mix of material.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Under a commission from CBeebies, Plug-in Media and producer Kindle Entertainment have created a new 3D website for the preschool channel’s series Big and Small. The website, developed using Papervision3D technology, invites kids into the house (featured in the series) where they can interact with animated versions of Big and Small in a real-time environment. The site features activities and games, including Band Game where users can create 105 different variations of the show’s theme music using various instruments, or paint using either Big’s paw or Small’s little hand. This month and next the site will expand to include new rooms and games. Big and Small is a co-production between Kindle Entertainment and 3J’s Entertainment for the BBC, in association with, Treehouse TV and Studio 100.
Nelvana is set to attend NATPE 2009 this January 26-29 in Las Vegas, where it will showcase a range of new shows including:
- Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5 (26×22) based on Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand, the CGI animation for the series is produced by Nelvana and Nerd Corps Entertainment and is slated to bow in fall 2009 on Cartoon Network (US) and Teletoon (Canada).
- Scaredy Squirrel (26×30, and shorts) Based on the book series by author Melanie Watt, the series is produced by Nelvana Studios. (K6-11)
- Skull Heads (26×30) – a 3D animated series co-produced with Korean studio Enemes, about five tiny creatures trying to get a grip on their size, shape and superpowers. (K6-11)
- Pearlie (52×12) a 2D animated series based on Wendy Harmer’s Pearlie books, which is produced by Nelvana and Sticky Pictures. (K6-11)
MARKETING/LICENSING
BBC Worldwide appoints Kidz Entertainment/EEMC as the licensing agent to rep the preschool property In the Night Garden in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Under the deal, Kidz Entertainment will manage the licensing program across these territories including the debut of product from master toy licensee Hasbro. Produced by Ragdoll Productions, In The Night Garden, the TV series, recently launched in Denmark and Poland and is set to debut across Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland over the next few months.
American Greetings Properties launches new product and inks new licensing deals for Care Bears including:
- Under a partnership with Spain-based retailer Oysho, a line of Care Bears apparel (e.g. t-shirts, sleepwear, undergarments, swimwear, casual wear, footwear etc) is now available at Oysho stores, with the line slated to rollout to all of the retailer’s 362 stores in 23 countries through June 2009.
- Europe: Fipo Group Aps – kid’s and adult apparel throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland; D’arpeje – toys and ride-ons in France from April 2009; Branded Clothing launches a Vintage Apparel Collection this winter in the UK, and Aykroyds launches a sleepwear collection summer/fall 2009.
- Asia: Shanghai Joint Force — branded housewares in China; Seggan Taiwan – stationary throughout Taiwan; Sterling Paper Products – branded stationary (notebooks, stickers, pencil cases, book covers etc) throughout the Philippines in spring 2009; New Urban Male.com – vintage men/women apparel (t-shirts, tank tops, boxers, flip flops) throughout Singapore in spring 2009.
- South America: Editorial Vertice activity and coloring books in spring 2009 across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile; Deomar Editora stickers and sticker albums in March 2009 in Brazil.
- Australia and New Zealand: Apparel House (New Zealand) – girls infant wear (body suits and jackets, and junior girls hats); Casco Blue’s – pajamas across New Zealand and Australia; Apparel House Design & Supply (New Zealand) – apparel and accessories; Vita New Zealand Limited – cot, mattresses, nursery items and boosters.
With 68 days until the American International Toy Fair, information about new products set to launch in 2009, and that will be featured at the annual event are rolling in. Toy Fair 2009 will take be held February 15-18, 2009 in NYC at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and showroom locations in the Toy District.
Products based on Cartoon Network‘s series Chop Socky Chooks include those from:
- Inkology Inc. school supplies (binders, theme books, composition books and writing instruments etc.), launch at mass market and other retailers nationwide in January 2009.
- Jada Toys offers a line of 6-inch articulated action figures with accessories based on four characters from the series.
- Trends International posters based on the series
Paramount Licensing toy and collectibles launching at Toy Fair 2009 include:
- Aquarius Images debuts a lenticular puzzle based on the upcoming feature film Hotel For Dogs (PG), which is set for release January 23, 2009.
- Madame Alexander bows a new series of collectible dolls based on five Paramount Pictures properties, Charlotte’s Web, Grease and three Audrey Hepburn movies, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Funny Face and Sabrina.
- For The Godfather (not for kids, I know but really who doesn’t like The Godfather): Darkhorse Sculpture will offer a lifelike 6-inch tall limited edition bust of Don Corleone; Funko Bobble Heads will release the Don Vito Corleone as a talking bobble head (an offer you can’t refuse?)
