Good morning, it’s Monday, December 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Jimmy Fallon will begin his dry run as the host of NBC‘s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Monday in the first of a series of 5-minute video blogs on NBC.com, reports B&C. New installments will be posted every weeknight at 12:30 a.m., to coincide with show’s official slot. Variety has Jimmy officially taking over for Conan O’Brien on March 2.
UK-based satellite TV service BSkyB relaunched its online Sky Player TV service offered for no extra charge to its DTH customers. Sky Player TV, now viewable both on PCs and Macs, provides live simulcasts of 25 channels including the Sky Sports channels, Sky News, The Disney Channel, National Geographic and British Eurosport with enhanced video quality using bitrates of up to 1.8 Mbps. The service is also available on a subscription basis for non-BSkyB subscribers. The video player is powered by Microsoft’s Silverlight platform.
The WB.com kicks off its latest original series today – the hospital drama parody Children’s Hospital – starring The Daily Show’s Rob Corddry, Megan Mullaly, Ed Helms and others. Rob himself created the show, reminiscent of Gary Marshall’s Young Doctors in Love, for Warner’s Studio 2.0 venture.

Facebook announced a series of upgrades to its video player launched last year. The new player now supports 720p resolution and upgraded audio, so the videos you shoot with that new HD version of the Flip Mino camera will appear in their native quality. Facebook also added the ability to embed videos you’ve posted to third party sites. Facebook says more than 45 million videos have been posted to the social networking service to date at a rate of approximately 100,000 new videos/day.
International video sharing site WorldTV unveils a new advertising platform this week tied to Google’s all powerful AdSense system. Beginning today producers will see ads served alongside their videos purchased through AdSense, splitting the revenue earned from the ads 50/50 with WorldTV. The distribution network will alternatively swap out its own ads with producer’s ads on a one-to-one basis to account for the split. High volume producers will also have the option to keep 95% of the revenue if they pay WorldTV a monthly subscription fee.
Detroit’s beleaguered auto makers are taking to the web to make their case for federal aid by creating a series of ambitious web sites, videos, blogs, Facebook profiles and Twitter accounts timed to the release of its business plan to Congress on Tuesday, reports the WSJ. GM is also posting a lengthy mea culpa/plea on various sites and blogs. (It’s got to be more cost effective approach than fueling up those private jets again.)
Diet Coke is footing the bill for new lifestyle-themed web series produced and distributed by New York-based Digital Broadcasting Group (DBG). Debuting on Dec. 9, Style Series has fashionista Rachel Zalis interviewing such luminaries as fashion designer Cynthia Rowley and Grammy Award winners Robin Thicke and Rihanna. Coke is spending lavishly on promotion and distribution of the series with a combination of outdoor, mobile and digital media distribution.
This week’s YouTube address from President Elect Barack Obama’s outlined a massive public works campaign that includes a commitment to provide broadband access to all Americans.
Netflix notified customers that it has fixed a glitch affecting the quality of movie downloads using the Roku set top or Xbox 360 gaming console.
America’s obsession with politics was replaced with an obsession for food during Thanksgiving week as 6 of the Top 10 adult-oriented cable TV websites hailed from The Food Network, according to Hitwise’s weekly rankings.

The next generation of laptops will be able to create HD video podcasts from their built in webcams. Samsung announced a new cheap, mass produced notebook webcam image sensor that supports 720p HD video at 30 frames per second. The S5K4AW CMOS sensor, due out toward the middle of next year, will support business video conferencing, internet video sharing and direct-to-web scanning.
Reports are circulating that Wal-Mart will begin selling a 4GB version of the 3G iPhone for just $99 before New Year’s Day. Apple has yet to comment. The huge retailer did strike a similar deal to offer Android-based G1 phones for $148.88 – about $30 cheaper than what T-Mobile charges.
Microsoft appointed Fred Humphries as Managing Director of Federal Government Affairs, replacing Jack Krumholtz who represented Microsoft’s interest on the Hill for the past 14 years. Fred served on Microsoft’s state government affairs team since 2000, overseeing the company’s relationships with governors and local officials.
The BBC’s iPlayer, which launched around this time last year, has quickly become a rousing success in UK – serving more than 35 million programmes (as the Brits spell it) or 1 million streaming video requests per day on average in November. Not bad for a public broadcaster’s online catch-up service. It’s success has had much to do with the ubiquity of the player’s availability. After being widely criticized at launch for only working on Windows XP computers, the BBC quickly added support for Mac, Linux, Vista and later for a range of portable devices including the iPod, iPhone and Nintendo Wii. Another 61 million requests were made for iPlayer programming thorough Virgin Media in Oct., which offers access to the interactive portal to its cable subscribers. Interestingly the success of the iPlayer has coincided with the rapid improvement of connection speeds in the UK – increasing from 4.1 Mbps in Jan. to 5 Mbps in Oct. 2008, according to broadband test analysis tool Speedtest.net. These two factors – ubiquitous distribution and rapid, affordable connectivity – are crucial for multiplatform programmers going forward. The iPlayer is so admired, it seems that calls for the BBC to pick up the tab for its increased bandwidth usage have even abated.
