15 animated features films have qualified for consideration in the Best Animated Feature category for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association‘s upcoming 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which celebrate 2009 achievements. Of the 15 eligible movies five will be selected as nominees in the category, which will be announced with all the other nominees on Tuesday, December 15 at 8a. Hosted by Ricky Gervais, The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air live on Sunday, January 17 on NBC at 8p. The 15 submitted animated feature films are:

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Taylor Lautner, best known to most of the world as Jacob in the Twilight movies, is signed on to play Max Steel in Paramount’s feature film adaptation of Mattel’s Max Steel action figure line of toys, per the LA Times and Variety. Lautner will take on the roll of Josh McGrath (AKA Max Steel), a 19-year-old extreme sports athlete that winds up working for a secret agency following an accident with Nanoprobes that transform him into a superhuman. Chad Damiani and JP Lavin have been tapped to pen the movie, the duo are also working on the movie Capeshooters. Mattel launched the Max Steel action figures, vehicles and adventure-themed toys, which were based on the Max Steel animated series that ran for three seasons, in the late 1990s/early 2000s.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Preschoolers will get another lesson on the importance of washing hands, which particularly important during flu season, in an interstitial segment featuring Handy Manny and debuting December 11 during Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney at 9:25a. The interstitial will repeat multiple times daily and will also feature la link to the Center for Disease Control‘s flu prevention micro-site.
BBC Worldwide completes new deals for Little Airplane Production‘s preschool series 3rd & Bird! In Spain, Playhouse Disney and Televisio de Catalunya acquire the broadcast rights for all 50×10 episodes and 1×20 special of 3rd & Bird, which will begin airing from first quarter 2010. In further deals, BBC Worldwide inks a deal for 3rd & Bird with free-to-air PTS Channel (Taiwan), which picks up all episodes of the series and will broadcast in Mandarin from early 2010.
TV viewers in Canada (about 8+ million households) will get a full free preview month of Nickelodeon, from Tuesday, December 15 through Monday, January 18, on all participating carriers, including Rogers Personal TV subscribers, Shaw Direct, Shaw, Cogeco and Bell TV. The month-long preview will include special programming events and exclusive premieres of new Nick live-action series such as The Troop and The Fresh Beat Band:
- 12 Days of Drake & Josh – episodes of the series will air December 14-25 at 5p, concluding with the special Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh (1×90).
- Fanboy and Chum Chum marathon December 26 4p-8p
- The Troop – series Canadian premiere with back-to-back episodes on Saturday, January 2, at 8p
- The Fresh Beat Band – Monday, January 4 at 1:30p, the live-action series will air regularly Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 1:30p.
- Nick Classic Sunday – will feature 24 hours of favorite Nickelodeon series January 10, 6a-6p – series include CatDog, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy among others.
- Nickelodeon’s regular roster of programming in Canada will of course feature its current shows such as iCarly, True Jackson, VP, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Penguins of Madagascar, Dora the Explorer, The Mighty B! and so on.
Kidtoons, which brings family-targeted movies/programming to theatres, will offer a promotional, theatrical premiere of the new movie, Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas, at some 150 movie theaters nationwide this month. The program will also feature two winter-themed episodes of the animated series Olivia. Participating theatres include Carmike, National Amusements, Abingdon Cinemall, Atlas, Emagine, Marquee, Neighborhood, Cinedigm’s Pavilion Theatre, Rave Motion Pictures, Republic Theatre Group, Showplace and UltraStar. Specifically national Amusements Theatres will offer the Curious George movie and Olivia episodes for just one weekend, December 12-13 at 12p, while all other theaters will offer showings each weekend throughout the month. Scholastic will publish the third book in author Suzanne Collins‘ young adult The Hunger Games trilogy in English on August 24, 2010. Book three of The Hunger Games, which does not yet have an official title, will be released simultaneously by Scholastic in hardcover and audio. Additionally, the trade paperback edition of The Hunger Games is scheduled for publication on July 6, 2010 in the US. Scholastic has sold 1.5 million copies of the first two books in the trilogy in 14 months. The first book, The Hunger Games was published in September 2008, followed by the second book, Catching Fire, on September 2009. Lionsgate recently optioned movie rights for The Hunger Games with Nina Jacobson’s Color Force production company to produce the film with Suzanne Collins writing the screenplay.
MARKETING/LICENSING
The Jim Henson Company and Grosset & Dunlap, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, ink a licensing deal to publish a series of books based on Henson’s science-centric preschool animated series Dinosaur Train, which airs on PBS Kids. The Dinosaur Train publishing program is slated to launch in September 2010 with a board book and a paperback picture book featuring color images from the TV series. Grosset & Dunlap will serve as the exclusive publisher for 8×8 paperback storybooks, paperback leveled readers and board books. Other previously announced Dinosaur Train licensees include, Learning Curve, which has exclusive global toy rights, Imagine Apparel for sleepwear, and Patch Products, which will create puzzles and activities. Dinosaur Train was created by Craig Bartlett (Hey Arnold!).
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) appoints Target Entertainment Group to act as the consumer products agent for the PlayStation brand across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia (EMEA). Target will work to develop a strategic licensing plan with SCEE. The primary target demographic will be Males 18-40, for which Target will license a range of items including apparel, accessories and gifts. The secondary target demo is Boys 7-14, with a range of licensed products. Target already serves as the consumer products agent for PlayStation software Intellectual Properties in EMEA, according to a deal inked with SCEE in April 2009.
