Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, December 3, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

The cast of director Robert Zemeckis and Disney’s 3D animated motion-capture adaptation of Charles Dickens perennial classic A Christmas Carol, which will star Jim Carrey, continues to grow.  In a podcast interview about his movie Beowulf, per Coming Soon (the interview can be found at beowulfmovie.com), Zemeckis says (and to my knowledge this is the only “official” mention so far) that his A Christmas Carol will feature esteemed cast mates Gary Oldman, Bob Hoskins and Colin Firth.  In the movie, Carrey plays Ebenezer Scrooge as well as the three ghosts (Christmas past, present and future) who visit Scrooge. The movie is currently set for release November 6 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

If you have picked up a newspaper or a magazine recently you’ll know that a good number of Hannah Montana (AKA Miley Cyrus) fans have been unable, for one reason or another, to get tickets to attend one of her recent concerts.  Well, now fans will be able to catch a version of the concert in movie theaters, when Disney releases the digital 3D movie, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert in movie theaters in the US and Canada for one week, February 1-7, 2008.  The movie is also slated to open in several international markets, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, German-speaking Europe, Latin America and other selected Asian and European territories in spring 2008.  The filmed concert is a combination of her concerts at several venues from the 54-city tour.  Additionally, Disney Pictures is prepping for a Hannah Montana feature film, based on Disney Channel’s original series, which is expected to begin production in spring 2008.

Studio B Productions’ animated short, Clancy With The Puck, has been acquired by Canadian educational broadcasters Knowledge Network and SCN, both of which being running the short in high rotation this month.  Additionally, Canadian publisher Raincoast Books has released a Clancy With The Puck hardcover picture book, which comes packaged with a DVD of the animated short, in Canada and the US.  The Clancy With The Puck property is created by Chris Mizzoni, with legendary Canadian hockey commentator Bob Cole serving as the narrator of the animated short.

Toei Animation’s animated series Digimon Data Squad debuted in Germany on RTL2 over the weekend.  The series, which is available in 40+ countries across Europe, North and South America and Asia, is currently in its fifth season, with Toei looking to develop a licensing program to support the new installment of the series.  The Digimon brand has generated upwards of US$72 million in merchandising sales in Japan alone.

When Penguins Fly, a new holiday themed episode of Cyberchase will bow on PBS Kids Go! on Wednesday, December 12 (check local listings for times and repeats).  Leading up to the debut of the episode, Cyberchase Online offer the original theme song and mini music video to When Penguins Fly, beginning Wednesday, December 5.  Additionally, the site will feature a preview of Harry’s New Year’s Eve Countdown, the new Cyberchase For Real segment in which Harry (Matt Wilson) figures out a way to start the New Year off as a winner.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Kidz Bop, the kid-aimed audio series, is set to re-launch its website (Kidzbop.com) tomorrow, December 4, 2007.  The site offers several new sections including interactive features, behind the scenes clips of the Kidz Bop world concert tour and a lineup of new original web series, some of latter star “real” kids whose user-generated videos became popular during the site’s recent online talent search, Be a KIDZ BOP Star, such as What Up! with Nick and Jake, Work it Out! with Kendall, Rockin’ it Old School with Giulietta and Rising Starz.

Hbc, the official department store partner and general merchandise retailer in Canada for 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games merchandise, has revealed its exclusive lineup of merchandise featuring the Games’ mascots, Miga, Quatchi and Sumi, each with its own personality and all three of which are born from a local Aboriginal tale: three plushes available in two sizes; an illustrated book featuring the mascots’ story; boys’ and girls’ pullover hooded sweatshirts, full-zip hooded sweatshirts; boys’/girls’ T-shirts with four different designs; kids’ ball caps and toques; and five collectible pins. Vancouver and Whistler will host the XXI Olympic Winter Games, February 12-28, 2010 and the Paralympic Winter Games from March 12-21, 2010.

Care Media Holdings Corp.’s initial test-market of KidCARE Medical Television Network, an ad-sales supported TV effort for pediatrician’s waiting rooms, has been completed, with current plans include having an additional 900 TV installed in pediatric offices by the end of this year.  Programming on KidCARE TV features health-care education and awareness content aimed at the captive parents audience sitting in waiting rooms (estimated to be about 16 million) at pediatricians offices.  The segments, which are “continually updated,” are streamed directly to the doctor’s offices on big-screen LCD TVs.  KidCARE TV has inked a deal with Nielsen Media Research to conduct a media compliance audit and a demographic and audience study, the study, which has already begun, will continue through December.  It is a curious thing, while Mom and/or Dad are certainly a captive audience at the pediatrician’s office, whether they will be able to take in any content, let alone hear it, will be a challenge, from my experience anyhow.
