Cynopsis: DIGITAL
12/22/08
Good morning, it’s Monday, December 22, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing – an abbreviated edition to remind you Cynopsis editorial staff is off this week, returning after the New Year. Enjoy the holidays – your next edition from us will be on Friday, January 2, 2009. And so, in the meantime …
The Recording Industry Association of America shifted course and decided to finally stop suing individual file sharers, according to the WSJ. The RIAA has filed lawsuits against more than 35,000 users since 2003 in an effort to stem the flow of illegal downloads. Instead, the industry group now plans to work directly with ISPs to identify customers who are uploading music via P2P networks. The ISPs will ask them to stop and eventually threaten to cut them off if they don’t. The new policy raises questions about privacy and due process. Similar efforts to restrict or disconnect file sharing users have been rejected by the European Union. Legislation to create a nationwide “internet blacklist” is still pending in France.
Comedy Central has ordered six episodes of Secret Girlfriend, a comedy series from FremantleMedia North America based on a the online dating-themed web series featured on Atomicwedgietv.com . The show consists of various girls vying for the attention of the male viewer on the other end of the webcast – i.e. the viewer. Jay Rondot and Ross Novie, who created the web series, will executive produce and Eric Weinberg (Scrubs, Californication) will serve as showrunner. The series is expected to premiere on Comedy Central in the latter part of 2009, containing two back-to-back 11-minute scripted minisodes.
Sanyo signed off on Panasonic‘s offer to acquire the company for $9 billion after Panasonic raised its offer by 1 yen/share. The deal is expected to give Panasonic a huge advantage in the rechargeable and solar battery markets.
The NPD Group came out with an interesting report that says 15% of online users purchased music from the internet in 2008, up 2% from last year, and that legal music download volumes increased 29% during Q3 vs. the same period last year. Positive numbers were seen for all age groups except the 50-and-older segment, which represents a small portion of buyers. At the same time the percentage of users who pirate music has remained steady at 14%, which means legit music downloaders are growing at a faster rate than pirates.
The U.S. Post Office was forced to temporarily shut down the 96-year-old Operation Santa program this week in New York and several other U.S. cities after a disturbing “privacy breach” occurred. The program gives volunteers at post offices the opportunity to answer letters written by needy kids to the jolly fellow at the North Pole and send back gifts. A not-for-profit group has launched the website beanelf.org to create an online solution to the problem and build out a nationwide network of gift giving. The group is working to develop new software to allow children to securely post their letters to Santa online. When a member of the public prints out a child’s letter from the site, they would never see the child’s home address, but only a bar-coded shipping label. Google approved a grant for the site earlier this year but it is still seeking donations to help get the word out about the program via search advertising on Yahoo and MSN.
We’ll be back on January 2, 2009. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and a very happy and health New Year!
