~ MORE STUFF ~

On Friday, Discovery Communications put forth a major shift within its organization to streamline content development, programming and operations by grouping networks together for a more efficient structure. The announcement included these several management and network changes:

  • Discovery Channel and Science Channel will be grouped together under the oversight of 24-year Discovery veteran Clark Bunting as acting President/GM who continues to report to David Zaslav, President/CEO, Discovery Communications. Prior to this position Clark was President/GM of Emerging Networks and was formerly the GM of Discovery Channel. Debbie Myers will continue as GM/Science Channel, reporting to Clark Bunting. John Ford as President/GM of Discovery Channel is departing the company.
  • The male-focused networks, Military Channel and HD Theater along with Investigation Discovery (ID) will be managed by Henry Schleiff as GM, reporting to David Zaslav. Henry joined the company in August 2009 where he has since developed new content for ID.
  • Planet Green will be grouped with other more female-targeted networks, Discovery Health and FitTV with Laura Michalchyshyn presiding as GM, reporting to David Zaslav. Laura was hired in February 2009 to lead Planet Green and in her new position will take on the added responsibility of supervising the transition of Discovery Health to becoming OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.
  • Carole Tomko, the present GM of Discovery Health and FitTV will now assume the role as President of Discovery Studios, reporting to Peter Liguori, COO. Carole is charged with spearheading new growth opportunities for Discovery Studios’ business as well as managing the studio’s production of the series Curiosity: The Questions of Life.
  • Eileen O’Neill will continue in her present role as President/GM of TLC and similarly, Marjorie Kaplan will continue to serve the company as President/GM of Animal Planet. Both report to David Zaslav.
  • Other organizational changes include the company’s Government Relations/Public Policy and Standards and Practices unit, headed by Alexa Verveer as SVP will now report to David Leavy, EVP/Corporate Affairs and Global Communications. Furthermore, the Enterprise Operational Services group, led by David Kline as EVP will now fall under the oversight of Brad Singer, CFO.

A&E Network is set to launch the new original real-life series Paranormal Cops on January 19 at 1030p. The series, opening with an hour-long premiere episode followed by six half-hour episodes, follows a group of regular Chicago cops by day and at night they become paranormal investigators. Paranormal Cops is produced for A&E by North South Productions.

VH1 will debut a new edition of VH1 Storytellers: John Mayer on January 28 at 8p. The show highlights a taped live concert by Mayer earlier this month at Brooklyn’s Steiner Studios where he performed songs from his new album “Battle Studies” and gave fans a chance to hear what inspires his music. VH1 is also launching a new companion website at Storytellers.VH1.com, a destination for fans and artists to connect and where fans can relate what music inspires them through uploaded videos of themselves.

Actress Brittany Murphy, 32, died suddenly on Sunday from cardiac arrest after suffering a heart attack.  Murphy’s many films included notables Clueless, 8 Mile, Girl Interrupted and Don’t Say a Word.  She is survived by her husband, screenwriter Simon Monjack, to whom she was married in May 2007.
