Cynopsis: Kids!

12/15/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, December 15, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Summit Entertainment confirms that writer/director/producer Chris Weitz will direct the next two Twilight movies, which are of course, based on author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series.  Production on the second movie, New Moon, is scheduled to begin in the next few months, with Summit planning to release the film towards the end of 2009 or early 2010.  Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production will oversee New Moon for the studio, along with the studio’s Director of Production Gillian Bohrer.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Two new episodes of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee will debut on Nickelodeon this month:

  • America’s Forgotten Children: Rural Poor (December 21 at 9p) – looks at families with kids in rural America who have been struggling to make it for several years.
  • Boys and Girls – In a Class of Their Own? (December 28 at 9p) – the episode explores the pros and cons of single gender education and what kids at different types of schools have to say on the topic.

Paramount Pictures and Imax Corporation join to release Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams, simultaneously in Imax and conventional movie theaters on May 8, 2009.  The movie, which will be digitally re-mastered for Imax, follows the early days of James T. Kirk and the members of the crew of the USS Enterprise.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Aardman‘s Wallace & Gromit, Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release three animated DVDs featuring the eccentric duo this February 10, 2009: Wallace  & Gromit: A Grand Day Out (1989); Wallace  & Gromit: The Wrong (1993); Wallace  & Gromit: A Close Shave (1995).  Each release also includes a range of extras, including audio commentary with creator Nick Park, featurettes, and contraptions.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is set to release the new DVD Strawberry Shortcake: Happily Ever After, on February 3, 2009.  The all-new title includes offers Valentine’s Day cards and bonus extras including free downloadable coloring pages and a character memory game.

Beyond inks a number of program sales for content launched at Mipcom earlier this fall, including kid-targeted series:  Nickelodeon Australia picks up the third season The Amazing Extraordinary Friends; Disney Australia & New Zealand acquires season two of Numberjacks; additionally, new deals Mythbusters (not specifically for kids, but kids/teens love it too) are completed with Discovery Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan, China, East Asia, Mongolia and Pacific Rim, SBS TV Denmark, Silverbox Ukraine, Sky Networks New Zealand, SBS Australia, Dmax Germany and Cuatro in Spain.

MARKETING/LICENSING

UK Broadcaster Five‘s launches a new online store offering products from the shows featured during its preschool-targeted Milkshake! programming block.  Designed and operated by Digital Stores, the new Milkshake! shop also offers cross-promotional opportunities for related events, including a ticketing facility for Milkshake! Live: My First Concert, the touring stage show.
