Good morning, it’s Monday, December 14, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

This time the rumors may turn out to be true. Google is teaming with HTC Corp. to release the Nexus One – its own branded cell phone designed to run and showcase the company’s Android mobile operating system, per the WSJ. (The phone is reportedly based upon the HTC Passion model.) Rather than selling the phone through a wireless carrier, like Apple has done with AT&T in the U.S. for the iPhone, Google plans to market Nexus One as an unlocked device. Users would be required to buy cellular service for the device separately, but they could choose the carrier themselves. (The phone is GSM-based, so it should be compatible on T-Mobile or AT&T networks.)  Photos of the Nexus One, currently being testing by Google employees, are being “leaked” all over the internet, such as this one at Engadget.
                                                         

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

                                                                                           
Sundance Channel‘s fashion-themed web portal Full Frontal Fashion is adding the French fashion series “Habillees” (“Dressed”) in 6 segments, premiering Dec. 15. Hosted by fashion journalist Mademoiselle Agnes, produced by Mademoiselle Agnes and directed by Loïc Prigent, “Habillees” features coverage from around the global fashion world. The bi-annual series is shot during the fall/winter and spring/summer fashion weeks in New York, Paris and Milan.
 
NBC unveiled Mission: Chuck Me Out, a new social media game designed to reward fans who help spread the word about the network’s returning series “Chuck” via social networking. Earn points by completing daily missions and posting digital watercooler talk regarding Chuck on Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace. The Chuck Fan with the most points at the end of the competition gets to have his or her face appear in an episode during one of Chuck’s “flashes.”
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Online virtual concert enabler Planet Cazmo will host its first benefit event in partnership with Toys for Tots on Dec. 18 and 19. Major acts confirmed to perform include, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and American Idol contestants David Archuletta and Allison Iraheta, along with artists Jay Sean, Sean Kingston, Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, Parachute, The Script, and Metro Station. Planet Cazmo will donate a week’s worth of virtual goods’ revenue to support Toys for Tots in conjunction with this event.
 
Ad serving technology platform Rocket Fuel announced it has secured $3 million in venture funding led by existing investor Mohr Davidow Ventures. The company plans to use the funds to continue building its corporate infrastructure, scaling operations and expanding its engineering team.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
After declining for the first time since 2002, online advertising is expected to resume growing next year thanks to a slowly recovering economy, and basic structural changes in how marketers and the public use media, according to a new eMarketer report. Total ad spending is projected to rise from $22.4 billion in 2009 to $23.6 billion next year, $25.2 billion in 2011 and balloon to $34 billion by 2014. Video ad spending growth is once again expected to far outpace any other online format, running in the 34% to 45% range from 2009 through 2014.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
I see your lawsuit and raise you. Responding to a suit Nokia filed in federal court in Delaware alleging that Apple’s iPhone violates 10 patents covering technologies Nokia owns, Apple filed a countersuit on Friday counting 13 Apple patents that Nokia is infringing upon. The countersuit claims that Nokia sought to gain an unjust competitive advantage over Apple by “charging unwarranted fees” for its patents considered essential to building cell phones.
 
Google CEO Eric Schmidt is taking heat from privacy advocates such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation over his seemingly dismissive remarks regarding sharing users’ information, in an interview last week on CNBC. When asked about whether users should be sharing information with Google as if it were a “trusted friend,” Schmidt responded, “If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”
 
After months of stalemate, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed new legislation last week extending the reporter’s shield law to include bloggers, citizen journalists and other non-paid reporters.
 
Felony charges were dropped against the young woman who was arrested for taping footage of the New Moon trailer in a Chicago area movie theater at her sister’s birthday party, reports The Wrap. Exhibitor Muvico called the police when they saw her using the camcorder in the theater as part of a new “zero tolerance policy” on piracy.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Quality matters for viewers of online video and they’re unforgiving when they don’t receive it, according to analysis from video services/analytics firm TubeMogul. When encountering slow load times on six top video sites and platforms, 81.19% of viewers chose to click away instead of waiting for a video to rebuffer. About one out of every 25 streams experienced a rebuffer (roughly 6.8% of the time.) As online video audiences continue to grow, CDN imperfections like these will adversely affect publishers’ bottom lines, warns TubeMogul.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
The new version of iTV’s popular entertainment listings iPhone app is back on the app store after being removed due to technical difficulties. New features include support for multiple DVR remotes including the Roku box and the ability to see what other i.TV users are watching at any given time by tapping on the ‘Watching’ tab. TV shows are now ranked in order of most watched. The ‘Watching’ tab also shows which TV shows, movies and celebrities have been favorited most often by the i.TV community.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker signed a new three-year contract with G.E. to continue running the company through 2013, per THR. As the Comcast acquisition is expected to take up to 18 months to gain regulatory approval, Zucker’s new pact would allow him to run NBCU for at least another year and a half following the conclusion of the deal.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Now that Apple’s App Store has become a major media platform, it makes sense to spiff up the interface a bit. Apple has begun to introduce a redesign of the iPhone App Store within iTunes 9. The first thing you’ll notice is that the featured app’s icon and screenshots are larger – communicating the application’s features in a more visual way. (The default description section has also been shortened to make room for the visuals.) The background is now white and the purchase button is more prominent to encourage impulse buying. The “what’s new” section is also broken out right below the description to let users know what developers have most recently added to the app. Apple”s not talking but the App store redesign could very well be the first step in its reported plan to overhaul the iTunes storefront to allow users to buy songs through a web browser­a move that should open iTunes up to a wider variety of digital devices instead of only those loaded with iTunes software.
