The Primetime Emmy® Awards 2010

08.09.10

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 9, 2010, and this is the fourth in a special five-part series on this year’s Primetime Emmy® Awards.  Each weekly installment will concentrate on one or two award categories with information about each of the nominees as listed ATAS and if provided, a description sent to us by the nominee and/or the nominee’s representatives.  Each installment will also open with an editorial about the category, written for Cynopsis by Daisy Whitney.  As always with any special edition, we hope you find the information relevant, interesting and informative, and encourage your feedback via our Discussion board on our Cynopsis website here.

In the category of “Outstanding Reality Program/Host

for Reality Program”
by Daisy Whitney

Here’s the reality of the reality TV award categories in the Emmys – they’re kind of in repeats.

According to RealityTVWorld.com, 22 reality TV shows garnered a total of 54 nominations for the primetime Emmys, but outstanding reality competition nominees are the same for the fourth year in a row, while the list of hosts being tapped looks much like last year’s nominees.

Does that mean the 2010 winners will be replicas of last year as well? It’s likely, experts say.

The contenders for Outstanding Reality Competition Program are seven-time winner The Amazing Race, as well as American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Project Runway and Top Chef. The nominees for best host include Survivor’s Jeff Probst, The Amazing Race’s Phil Keoghan, American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest, Dancing with the Stars’ Tom Bergeron and Project Runway’s Heidi Klum (her co-host Tim Gunn was not nominated this year).

Despite the competitive nature of the show’s themselves, the category doesn’t hold a lot of drama. With seven wins under its belt, The Amazing Race will likely land an eighth trophy. However, let’s not forget that Dancing with the Stars did snag nine nominations this year and should be taken seriously as a competitor, while Top Chef will also likely steal votes from The Amazing Race. But perhaps the biggest question, said Tim Surette, a writer with TV.com, is why wasn’t Survivor nominated?

Because the show’s host Jeff Probst is at the front of the line to win Outstanding Host for the third year in a row. “Probst is great at calling people out on Survivor without sounding like a jerk. He thinks like a fan watching the show, and that makes him the best option here,” Surette said.

In the reality program category, My Life on the D-list is hard to beat as it’s won twice before, but newcomer Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution could snag the trophy, especially because of its positive message around change and good health. Another feel-good contender that could edge out My Life on the D-List is freshman show Undercover Boss.

AND THE NOMINEES ARE …

You walk away from DIRTY JOBS with more than just a glimpse into unfamiliar occupations.  You can’t help but gain a new understanding and appreciation for all the often-unpleasant functions someone is shouldering to make your everyday life easier, safer – and often cleaner.

With food flash mobs, emotional stories, and shocking facts about the food we eat, the chef’s efforts started a chain reaction of positive change across the country. Oliver says, “The time is right for people to rediscover the sense of pride, satisfaction and fun you can get from cooking for the people you love.
There’s an incredible community in Huntington and I wanted to prove that turning around the epidemic of obesity and bad health doesn’t have to be boring or dull in the slightest. Wonderful stories unfolded in Huntington, and hopefully this will inspire the rest of the States.”
