Cynopsis: DIGITAL

08/03/09

Good morning, it’s Monday, August 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In one of its first major actions under the leadership of new chairman Julius Genachowski, the FCC opened an inquiry into Apple‘s rejection of the handy Google Voice app from the iPhone store, reports the Dow Jones news service. In a letter sent to both Apple and AT&T, the commission asks for justifications of the decision as well as for a list and reasons why other applications have been rejected for the platform. The FCC began a broader inquiry into the exclusive deals carriers sign with handset manufacturers earlier this year.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Only a month and half after pulling back on its Soapbox streaming video service, MSN has struck a deal with the BBC and Channel 4 programmer All3Media to begin streaming full-length episodes of TV shows via the ad supported MSN Video Player. The player, which will feature content a full 180 days after it initially airs, will launch with 300 hours of content monetized by pre and post roll ads bought by MediaCom, MindShare and MEC Interaction, reports The Guardian. MSN is anxious to begin testing the service before Hulu and Arqiva, the company which purchased the assets of the government-rejected Project Kangaroo service, enters the UK streaming video market.

Scripps Networks Digital‘s real estate info site FrontDoor.com signed a deal with real estate platform solution provider Gabriel’s Technology of New York to syndicate expert real estate content to some 250 newspaper websites across the country.

Discovery is adding a Shark Week-themed mobile channel on Qualcomm’s Flo TV mobile service featuring snackable segments from the popular summer programming block.

The Korean Film Council introduced a new platform for distributing films online within the Korean market as a viable alternative to illegal file sharing, per Variety. The service, which will launch in beta in Nov., will provide a B-to-B platform with which to securely stream and archive independent and classic films.

The Wall Street Journal is working on a new professional-themed social networking site called “WSJ Connect” with the help of News Corp.-owned Slingshot Labs, reports TechCruch.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Online video portal MyDamnChannel is celebrated its 2nd anniversary on Friday with the launch of its latest original Knight Shift. (Two is like 90 in internet years, reckons MyDamn co-founder Rob Barnett, who promises that a new investment announcement, new shows and new revenue deals are forthcoming.) Knight Shift is an animated series that juxtaposes Arthurian Legend with the Sci Fi genre – the Knights are actually knighted contemporaries such as Sir Ben Kingsley and Sir Sean Connery who set out on a quest to launch their own TV show.

Los Angeles web developer Epsilon Concepts unveiled the Los Angeles Digital Directory, a tech and entertainment-themed online directory of jobs, job seekers, gigs, projects, vendors/agencies, freelancers/consultants, internships, recruiters/employment agencies and events.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The Net Neutrality issue has returned to center stage. Reps. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) introduced the Internet Freedom Preservation Act on Friday, a measure that would ban ISPs from blocking, throttling, interfering or discriminating against lawful use of applications or devices accessing the internet. The bill does allow for “reasonable network management” of traffic, presumably to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Several broadband related consumer groups have already out in support of the measure.

In only the second major file sharing case to go to trial, a US District Court in Boston ordered a BU grad student to pay 4 record labels a total of $675,000 in fine for illegally downloading music, per the Boston Globe.

Seattle-based Delve Networks announced a value-added partnership with market leading CDN Akamai to enable the company to offer comprehensive cloud-based video management services to the publishers it works with.

The WGA voted unanimously to accept 15 internet writers employed by local CBS stations in the Los Angeles area, reports Variety.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Despite reassurances from cable officials on several occasions, evidence is mounting that online consumers are watching so much video online that it’s beginning to replace their cable viewing, according to a new report from The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. The share of online adults who watch videos on video-sharing sites has nearly doubled to 62% – up from just 33% Dec. 2006. And the demographic is broadening rapidly to include women and older users, although 18-29 year olds continue to be the most frequent viewers (a full 90% of the demo watches videos online.)

  • TV and movie viewing are enjoyed by 1/3 of all internet users (up from 16% in ’07)
  • 23% of this subset (or 8% of all online users) say they have connected their computer to a television screen so they could view video from the internet on their TV
  • Watching video online (performed by 62% of users) outranks any other online activity including social networking (46%), podcasting (19%) and Twittering (11%)
  • Those who have cut back on their cable services are the ones most likely to have figured out how to solve the “last 10 feet” equation of routing online video to their TV screens

Twitter has expanded its reach to include 10.7% of all active internet users in June, according to Nielsen. Its growth has come despite a lack of widespread adoption by children, teens, and young adults – in June 2009, only 16% of Twitter.com users were under the age of 25.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Entertainment and sports-themed social app maker Watercooler launched a new social add on for CBSSport.com’s Fantasy Football offering, sponsored by Coors Light. FanSection opens up the game to Facebook’s entire social graph, allowing players to invite their friends or participate as a spectator, talk smack, or contribute to communal polls and trivia.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Online rep firm Gorilla Nation hired former Sympatico MSN sales executive Win Ohn as Director of Sales for Canada. He will be based in Toronto and report directly to Walder Amaya, VP of Operations.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

One way for programming entities to make money online is to take their core assets and adapt them to complement a business model that has a proven track record on the internet. Discovery unveiled a new ecommerce travel website on Friday, Discovery Adventures, enticing users to take part in exclusive adventure trips by teasing them with some of the channel’s mesmerizing photo and video content. The site launches with 16 exotic trips and its intuitive interface does a good job of walking you through the booking process. TV personalities such as Dave Salmoni of Animal Planet’s Into The Pride and Kara Cooney, Egyptologist and host of the Discovery Channel’s Out of Egypt, have taped personalized segments to help sell the voyages, which can run in the thousands of dollars. It strikes us as an intelligent extension of the brand and integrations like this one become even more intriguing when adopted as iTV apps. (Note: it may not be a bad idea to throw a disclaimer in here to remind folks that the TV personalities aren’t going with them on the trip.)
