Good morning. It’s Monday, August 31, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney Channel‘s premiere of its new original movie, Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie, on Friday, August 28, 8-9:55p, becomes the top entertainment telecast of the year, according to preliminary ratings, among K6-11 (4.5 million) and Tweens 9-14 (4.0 million). The movie also becomes the top cable telecast of the year with Total Viewers 2+ (11.4). The Wizards of Waverly Place Movie, the network’s 77th TV movie, is Disney Channel’s second most watched movie among K6-11, Tweens 9-14 and Total Viewers 2+ behind High School Musical 2 (August 17, 2007). The movie was also the top telecast on both cable and broadcast for Friday with K6-11, Tweens 9-14 and Total Viewers 2+, that latter being the number one Friday night telecast of the summer (June 1 August 28). Additionally, immediately following the movie the network debuted the half-hour special Lights, Camera, Take Action! Backstage with Disney’s Friends for Change (9:55p) earning an average K6-11 (1.9 million), Tweens 9-14 (1.7 million) and Total Viewers (4.8 million).
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences handed announced winners for the 36th Annual Daytime Entertainment Creative Arts Emmy Awards in a ceremony on Saturday night. These awards are for programs broadcast from 2a-6p during the 2008 calendar year. Big winners of the night in the kid/family targeted programming categories were PBS earning 10 statues and Nickelodeon with 8, followed by Cartoon Network and NBC with two, Disney Channel and 4Kids on Fox each with one. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Aardman Animations‘ characters Wallace and Gromit will host the new BBC1 lighthearted and humorous series, Wallace and Gromit’s World of Inventions, per the Guardian from the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival. Designed to encourage a new generation of inventors, the stop-motion animated duo will introduce documentary footage focusing on scientific breakthroughs, inventors, and “mind-boggling” inventions from around the world. Aardman will produce the new series.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Another new carriage deal for JimJam. The preschool-targeted JimJam channel, from Hit Entertainment and Chello Zone, will be available in Belgium for the first time on Telenet beginning tomorrow. JimJam joins Telenet’s ‘Plus” package in the Kids & Music section.
The Jim Henson Company heads to Mipcom this October where it will distribute its library of family classics and fantasy/sci-fi titles across all broadcast and digital platforms. Henson will be directly offering its programming catalog following the completion of previous distribution agreements with Hit Entertainment and Warner Bros. Sam Ewing, Head/International Sales, will helm the programming sales effort. Henson’s family classics titles include: Fraggle Rock (96×30); Jim Henson’s Mother Goose Stories (39×8); Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas (1×60); as well as Jim Henson’s The Hoobs (250×30); Jim Henson’s Construction Site (26×30); and Jim Henson’s Mopatop’s Shop (260×8). On the fantasy side titles include: Labyrinth (1×102); The Dark Crystal (1×93), and Farscape (series 88×60, mini series 2×120).
In other Henson news … Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release versions Blue-ray HD of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal in the US on September 29, 2009. To mark the 10th anniversary of Farscape, A&E Home Entertainment and Henson will release, for the first time, the Complete Series Megaset, which will include all four seasons of the series. A series of Farscape webisodes are currently in development. Additionally, a new Fraggle Rock movie and TV series are also in development.
Also at Mipcom/MipJunior 2009, PorchLight Entertainment will debut Art with Mati and Dada (13×7), a new mixed 2D/3D animated preschool series from Achtoons and RAI Fiction. PorchLight will screen the first three episodes of the series at MipJunior. The series follows 7-year-old Mati and her magical friend Dada as they explore the world of art and art history via their first hand encounters with artists throughout history, helping artists and discovering their secrets. Created by Giovanna Bo and Augusta Eniti, the first season of Art with Mati and Dad is set to launch on RAI 3 (Italy) in 2010.

The In the Night Garden magazine makes its debut in Australia this week. Based on the preschool TV series, In the Night Garden, the monthly magazine is being published in Australia by Park Publishing, a joint venture of ACP and BBC Worldwide. In the Night Garden is produced by Ragdoll Productions and airs in Australia on ABC. The magazine is also published in the UK, with licensed editions published in China and the Middle East.
