Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 24, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

CBBC is set to launch its new music comedy series My Almost Famous Family (11 episodes) on September 12, on BBC Two.  Produced by CBBC production, the series revolves around the Swann family, actually two families meshed together – including five kids, who perform as the music group We’re In Perfect Harmony and are the house band on an afternoon talk show hosed by the UK’s top teen.  In addition to mom, an African American soul singer, and dad, a British musician, the Swann family is comprised of four young teens, a bad boy rocker, a musical genius, a diva and a jokester, as well as an eight-year-old marketing genius that happens to be deaf.  The series will be showcased on another new CBBC series, Backstage (30 minutes), which goes behind the scenes on new CBBC show, on Monday, August 31 on CBBC. 

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Michael Chaplin, creator of Monarch Of The Glen, is adapting author Michelle Magorian’s (Goodnight Mister Tom) new young adult novel Just Henry (Egmont UK) as a family drama special (1×90) potentially for ITV, per Broadcast Now.  While the project has not yet been given the go-ahead, it is in development at ITV Studios.  Just Henry is a post WWII thriller that follows Henry, a movie-loving and judgmental teen who lost his father in the war, as he reluctantly becomes friends with two classmates when they are put together to work on a school project.  When Henry is given a camera to help with the project he takes a photo that turns everything upside down and in the process he teaches him about friendship and not to be so judgmental.

Actress Judy Greer joins the cast of Fox‘s upcoming movie Marmaduke, per Variety.  Greer will take on the role of mom in the movie, which of course is based on the Great Dane from the comic strip of the same name created by Brad Anderson and syndicated by United Features Syndicate.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel will host the primetime premiere of its Playhouse Disney special Handy Manny Motorcycle Adventure on Sunday, October 4, 7-7:45p.  The preschooler and parent-targeted special features guest appearances by Donny Osmond and Kris Kristofferson, with new songs performed by the band Los Lobos and actor Wilmer Valderrama (who plays Manny on the series).  A full-length preview of the special will be available on SVOD on Cablevision, Time Warner and Verizon Fios TV from Monday, September 14.  Mobile service providers Sprint TV and MobiTV will simulcast the special in conjunction with the TV premiere.    The special will also be available at PlayhouseDisney.com and on mobile VOD for AT&T CV, Sprint TV and Verizon V Cast customers beginning Monday, October 5.  Additionally, PlayhouseDisney.com will launch a new game based on the special entitled Handy Manny’s Motorcycle Reunion.

More One Piece on the way for the US and Canada.  Funimation Entertainment and Japan’s One Piece producer Toei Animation Co., publisher Shueisha and broadcaster Fuji Television Network, are moving forward with previously announced plans to continue offering the US and Canadian online simulcast of the animated series an hour after the episodes air in Japan, beginning Saturday, August 29 at 9p CDT, at www.onepieceofficial.com , followed shortly thereafter by Funimation partner websites.  The new One Piece episodes will rollout weekly while the series continues to air in Japan.  You may recall that back in June the plans to stream One Piece in the US and Canada were thwarted when hackers “compromised” Funimation’s servers.

MARKETING/LICENSING

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks new license deals in the UK for The X Factor including Sistema (insulated lunch bags, lunch boxes a drink bottles) and Event Merchandising (which will run an online store with a range of branded products).  Existing The X Factor licensees Aykroyd’s and TDP Licensing are set to introduce new girl and women nightwear this year, while Kinnerton will launch new confectionery products including an advent calendar and a mug gift set.  Also introducing new products is Helix Limited with new stationery lines at Ryman’s and Tesco this fall.  The sixth season of The X Factor debuted over the weekend in the UK on ITV.

Build-A-Bear Workshop and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) further their partnership with the introduction of a new character of the WWF Collectibear series, WWF Gray Wolf, at the Build-A-Bear Workshop stores and website.  In the US and Canada $1 from each sale will be donated to the WWF to help in its efforts to protect endangered animals and their habitats.
