Good morning, it’s Monday, August 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

To support the release of two portable media players Dell is working on launching its own online media outlet to rival iTunes, reports BusinessWeek. Utilizing the technology it acquired when it purchased wireless content delivery platform Zing, the idea is to allow content to be purchased and played on multiple devices without a computer. Dell is now in the process of attempting to strike deals with many of the same content providers that supply iTunes. To add insult to injury, Tim Bucher, a former engineering executive for Apple who sued the company in 2005 for wrongful termination, is spearheading the effort.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Here are some more details about the original shows launching on The WB.com on Aug. 27, the day the site comes out of private beta:

  • Blue Water High is set in an ultra competitive surf academy Down Under
  • A Boy Wearing Makeup is the personal video diary of a boy who dispenses makeup advice and fashion tips (No, he’s not Abigail)
  • Whatever Hollywood follows three kids who launch their own online reality show
  • Sorority Fever (premiering Sept. 8) is an ambitious mystery series crossing conspiracy with sorority, from Big Fantastic (Prom Queen) and Wonderland Sound and Vision
  • One of the site’s most promising features should be WBlender, allowing users to create mash-ups by utilizing clips from WB shows including Buffy, Friends, and The O.C.

 
Turner formed a partnership with Taiwan mobile service provider iScreen Corporation to distribute, market and promote Turner’s Cartoon Network-branded mobile services to operators in Taiwan.  This partnership has already resulted in a major collaboration with Taiwan Mobile, introducing the first Chinese language Cartoon Network mobile site to the territory.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
A new site called SportsFanLive from LA-based Sports Media Ventures takes some of the most infectious social networking components – polls, messaging, betting, and mapping – and uses them to create a hang out for die hard sports fans. The interface is entirely customizable based on what teams you like (and hate.) When you log on you are directed to news, chatter and even local watering holes where other fans of your team are gathering.
 
IFC.com
unveiled all 7 episodes of Pushing Twilight, the first scripted web series to come out of its Media Lab Studios division created to identify and incubate budding filmmaking talent. The show is based on a trailer submitted by Creator Steven Sprinkles and writer Stu Chait in the Red Bull After Hours contest.
 
Online Social aggregator/lifestreamer Social Thing was acquired by AOL for an undisclosed sum. The site allows AIM users to keep track of what their friends are doing on multiple platforms including YouTube, Flickr, Twitter and Digg.
 
Exactly 6 months before the Feb. 17, 2009 switchover, B&C has launched a new consumer-targeted video web portal on the expert driven how-to video site MonkeySee to educate folks on the digital transition. It’s very comprehensive, covering everything from antennas and converter boxes to government coupons.
 
Call for Content: There’s only a few more days left to submit odds and ends to the Disposable Film Festival, a short film festival designed to celebrate works made possible by the proliferation of cheap portable devices and online distribution outlets. Restrictions are minimal: submissions must be under 10 minutes and the medium itself must be part of the message. Note: If you tag your submission with “DFF” it will be added to the Disposable Film Festival Channel on Vimeo, one of the chief sponsors of the event.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Nextflix told Reuters it is up and running again after last week’s distribution snafus and is promising to issue a 15% refund to the customers who were effected by the problems (estimated to be about 1/3 of its 8.4 million subscribers.)
 
The whitespace debate should be closer to being settled in September when the FCC reports its findings on the trial runs of “smart radios” built to pinpoint local broadcast spectrum currently in use, per the WSJ. Broadcasters have lobbied tirelessly against using the spectrum for cheap wireless internet or other services, arguing such devices would interfere with TV signals.

IPTV services provider Kit Digital reported narrowed losses during Q2 on revenues of $5.5 million, up from $3.5 million a year ago. The company (formerly known as ROO Group) competed its acquisitions of Kamera and Sputnik during the quarter and closed on a round of $15 million in financing.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Facebook launched a new ad unit combining multimedia with user commenting, notes Inside Facebook. An ad for the new Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder (the weekend’s top movie) was the first to take advantage of the new format, offering users the option to launch a video trailer, view a review blurb of the movie from Rolling Stone or add and forward comments to friends.


~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The video game industry remained strong in July totaling close to $9.5 billion in sales of games, consoles and peripherals, according to NPD Group, up from $7 billion in July 2007. Nintendo continued its dominance in the console space selling 555,000 Wiis during the month, more than double Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
 
Here’s a fun little factoid making the rounds: Barack Obama surpassed Digg.com founder (and Diggnation host) Kevin Rose as the most followed man on Twitter, according to Twitter stat tracker Twitterholic.com. He’s up to 59,426 followers. (In case you’re wondering, John McCain has 1,540 followers.) Both of course pale in comparison to the following Michael Phelps has on Facebook (629,223 fans.)
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
In a sign of how much new media distribution experience is now valued, former DirecTV CEO Eddy Hartenstein has been hired as the new Publisher of The Los Angeles Times replacing David Hiller, who resigned on July 14.


 

Kit Digital announced three new executive hires:

  • Steve O’Farrell, former co-MD of Australian online agencies The Furnace, joins as GM of Asia/Pacific Group
  • Barak Bar-Cohen, former President of Narrowstep, takes the role of SVP, Business Development
  • Charlie Deane, most recently CEO of MediaInternet.com, will serve as GM of Latin America

 
Andy Reif
has ended his initial two-season contract with Championship Gaming Series and is leaving the league to pursue other opportunities. Former COO for G4 Network Dale Hopkins will take over Andy’s duties as head of the league.


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
If you’re looking for some non-athletic escapism online, check out the web portal It’s All in Your Hands.tv, the home of the Emmy award winning web thriller Satacracy ’88, which completed its 24th and final episode last month. The show, originally launched back in 2006, follows along the lines of other interactive web dramas like LG15 allowing the audience to determine which path the character’s life will take. The story’s chief creators Brad Winderbaum and Diahnna Nicole Baxter have a real feel for the medium, knowing how to compress the action and hit the right beats in each short webisode. Two newer shows, Moonshine (created by Rick Darge) and Blankslate (by Marc Gittadino), have also been added. They follow the same interactive format and are beginning to pick up steam story wise. Satacracy is also available in its entirety on Hulu.
