Good morning. It’s Monday, August 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
President Obama will address US students about the importance of education and succeeding in school in his back-to-school message on September 8, 2009, which for many kids will be the first day back at school following summer break. The speech will be carried live on www.whitehouse.gov at 1p on September 8. Additionally, to support the President’s message classroom activities will be available on the US Department of Education site www.ed.gov . By the way President Obama announced he would speak to students during an interview with 11-year-old elementary school kid and reporter Damon Weaver.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Set to premiere on BBC One later this year, the new CBBC drama Ingenious will feature a newly named all-star cast including Una Stubbs (Worzel Gummidge, Benidorm), David Calder (The Mummy, Bramwell), Ian Puleston Davies (Tess of the D’urbervilles, Vincent) and Christine Tremarco (Moving On, Waterloo Road). Produced by Lime Pictures (Hollyoaks, Apparitions) and written by Jeanette Winterson for CBBC, the special revolves around 11-year-old Sally, who lives on a farm with her grandmother (Stubbs), and her friends Spike and Patch as the discover their own genie in a bottle. Sally and her friends, and their new genie, are set to the task of finding a rumored dragon and find out what he wants and in doing so save the farm. Ingenious is directed by Brian Kelly (the original Torchwood) and produced by Rebecca Hodgson (Vincent, Wired)
MORE KIDS STUFF
Discovery Kids Channel unveils its fall 2009 schedule for K2-5 and K6-14. Discovery Kids will continue to operate as a TV network until Discovery and new partner Hasbro launch a new kid-targeted TV network (title TBA) in its place in fall 2010. Discovery Kids fall 2009 programming highlights include:
- Ready Set Learn! – programming block daily 9a-2p (K2-5):
- The block, hosted by Paz the animated Penguin, will feature developmentally appropriate preschool series including Peep and the Big Wide World, Hi-5, Hip Hop Harry, Bigfoot Presents and Wilbur.
- @DK programming block daily 2p-10p (K6-14)
- Making its network debut is The Saddle Club, based on the books by Bonnie Bryan. New episodes of The Saddle Club will bow Sundays at 6p.
- Tutenstein at 2p; The Future is Wild at 4:30p; Bindi: The Jungle Girl at 5:30p; Endurance – at 8p; and Adventure Camp at 8:30p
The Dove Foundation names Michigan-based Storytelling Pictures to produce its new movie/DVD/game review TV pilot (no title yet). Zondervan, a Christian communications company, will sponsor the pilot. The half-hour pilot is hosted by Rachael Ruiz (news anchor on NBC affiliate WOOD-TV) and Brian Burch (who works at PR firm Lambert, Edwards & Assoc.) will review theatrical and DVD releases, with college student Derek Emerson reviewing video games and technology. The pilot will run on several faith-based networks and stream on some websites in October. The foundation is not related to Unilever, which makes Dove soap.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Creative Asylum, a digital agency, launches The Fairly Godmother Academy, a new online social media campaign too support Random House’s release of Birdie’s Book, the first book in the girl 7-10 aimed Fairy Godmother Academy book series. Other elements of the campaign include giveaways, video seeding and social networking, including a Facebook page.
Start Licensing inks four new license agreements for the CBeebies series Big and Small with Fashion UK (apparel, outerwear), Zak! Ltd (lunch boxes, drinkware), publishing imprint Little Star Creations (magnetic gift height charts, headphones for little kids) and Avanquest (educational, interactive products). Products are set to begin rolling out this fall. Produced by Kindle Entertainment, Big and Small and Lenny Henry (who provides the voices for both star characters) will be showcased at Brand Licensing Europe next month in London.
Andrew Weil, MD, best known for leading the charge on integrative medicine, and manufacturer Key Baby launches the Weil Baby line of baby bottles, nipples, sippy cups, pacifiers, gift sets and accessories. The jointly designed line of products is currently available on www.weilbaby.com and will be available at selected Babies ‘R’ Us stores, select Whole Foods stores and Duane Reade stores later this month. New products will be added to the line next year.
