To retweet or not to retweet? Twitter is trying to streamline the process of reposting other people’s Twitter messages by releasing a new API that will enable developer to bake in retweeting functionality into the Twitter ecosystem. The interface will allow Twitter users to view and reply to third-party tweets even if they don’t follow that person according to the Twitter blog – a potentially powerful viral tool.

AnySource Media‘s Connected HDTV IPTV platform added the video networks Graspr and Viddler as content partners.

Warner Home Video joined with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment in the battle against DVD kiosk retailer Redbox, per Video Business. Beginning in Oct., the distributor will offer titles 28 days after their initial release. Warner Home Video also said it will push mail-order DVD rental companies such as Netflix to share revenue from rentals in exchange for providing goods on the sales date.

More troubling news for cable and satellite providers: Online streaming specialist Swarmcast is breaking into the world of consumer electronics, announcing a deal with set-top maker Roku to deliver streamed MLB games to your television. MLB Advanced Media has long used Swarmcast’s streaming technology online. Dubbed “Autobahn Live for CE,” the solution is being marketed to other live content providers as well to offer last-10-feet distribution for sports, concerts, addresses and other live events.

A group of tech companies including Intel, Fujitsu, Velocity Micro, and ZT Systems are joining the non-profit Connected Nation to help boost computer ownership and broadband connectivity among low-income households. The “Every Citizen Online” venture will provide digital literacy and help unconnected consumers purchase a broadband-enabled computer by offering an instant rebate, bundled with a year of discounted broadband service. The target for the program is low-income households (3 or more members, $18.3k or less income) who do not already own home computers.

Meanwhile the deadline for applying online to the government’s $7.2 billion broadband stimulus plan was extended from Aug. 14 to Aug. 20 due to technical problems caused from a flurry of applicants. Log into the NTIA’s Easygrants System at www.broadbandusa.gov for information on applying for a grant.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

U.S. videogame spending on consoles and games dropped precipitously in July, falling by 29% from the previous year to $848 million, reports the NPD Group, the fifth straight month of double-digit declines. Console revenue fell by 37% to $280 million while software slipped 26% to $437 million.

Twitter continues to captivate the tech sector but Facebook is the one reeling in the masses, according to comScore‘s latest social networking metrics. Facebook grew at twice the clip in July, adding 10 million new visitors since June and attracting 87.7 million users for an increase of 14%. Twitter grew its traffic by about 6% points month-to-month, attracting 21.2 million users.

Despite lagging considerably in terms of overall search share, the combined “searcher” penetration of Yahoo! and Microsoft was 73.3%, according to a June ComScore study, not far behind Google with 84%. The source of the discrepancy between search share and searcher penetration is that searchers on Google conducted significantly more searches on average in a month (54.5) than did searchers on Yahoo and Microsoft (26.9). Moreover, in an analysis of search loyalty among users of the top three engines, Google searchers displayed the highest loyalty rate. Users of Yahoo!/Microsoft sites conducted 32.6% of their searches on the combined Yahoo! and Microsoft Sites, but a much higher 60.7% of their searches on Google Sites.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Popular live mobile video service Qik, already available for Nokia, BlackBerry, Samsung, Android, etc., has finally launched an iPhone app for the video-capable iPhone 3GS. The app allows you to pull videos directly from the iPhone’s Camera Roll interface then upload them to your Qik account or any third party sites you have it tied to it, including Facebook and YouTube. Cool features include auto uploading settings and the ability to geo-tag your posts. However, like Ustream’s new video app, Apple will not allow Qik to upload live video, limiting the tool to video of the pre-recorded variety. (When will iPhone users truly be able to broadcast themselves?)

PhotoScatter is a simple new iPhone app that allows you to choose still photos from your camera roll and post them instantly to top sharing sites including Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, Shutterfly, Picasa, and Twitter (via TwitPic.)

iPicolo from Moobila is another app that does this well. Moobila also just released the iPicEd app that alloys you to edit you pictures directly from the phone before you upload them, manipulating gamma correction, RGB balance or converting pics to gray scale, sepia or negative images.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Gutenberg revolution continues. Google is now enabling authors and publishers who sign off under various Creative Commons licenses to distribute their works for free using the Google Books platform. The Creative Commons organization has been busy this year launching programs like the Attribution-ShareAlike agreement with Wikipedia that enables interoperability between Wikipedia licenses. This new alliance allows independent writers, artists and publishers, both existing Google Partners and non-partners, to distribute, commercialize and protect the reuse of their works. It’s a flexible license built for the digital age, with settings that authorize creative remixes and mash-ups that give credit where credit is due. Books that have been made available under a CC license have been marked with a matching logo on the book’s left hand navigation bar, allowing users to download the books and share them freely. “If the rightsholder has chosen to allow people to modify their work, readers can even create a mashup - say, translating the book into Esperanto, donning a black beret, and performing the whole thing to music on YouTube,” writes Xian Ke, Associate Product manager, Google Books in a blog post. Google says representatives of the Book Rights Registry intend to allow rightsholders to distribute CC-licensed works for free, pending court approval of a settlement. In the meantime, Creative Commons proponents such as Lawrence Lessig have make their works available on Google Books using the CC licenses.
