Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/11/08
Good morning, it’s Monday, August 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
NBCOlympics.com got off to a promising start garnering 70 million page views on Friday – 10 times the usage achieved on opening day of the Athens Games in 2004. Some 4.8 million people watched 3.1 million video streams on Saturday, more than four times the peak number of daily streams during the 2006 winter Games in Torino, Italy. Features such as a 4-screen video display, the ability to schedule alerts and the capability to jump back and forth to specific periods within an event make the Olympics online a whole new ballgame. Better yet, NBC’s exhaustive online coverage of the Games (designed to complement and protect the broadcast schedule) is only helping to boost linear ratings. More viewers tuned in to watch the first two days of Olympic telecasts than any summer games in 10 years.
The WB will officially rise from the ashes as a beta online network on Aug. 27, reported Mediaweek. The site will launch with archived classics such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville. The 40-episode web mystery Sorority Fever (from Big Fantastic, the producers of Prom Queen) debuts on WB.com on Sept. 8 starring LG 15 herself Jessica Rose.
SinglePoint was selected to power NBC’s mobile alert program for the Olympics, available on phoned from all domestic carriers. Opt-in to receive daily or breaking news and multimedia alerts, including breaking news, athlete alerts, medal results, or event reminders. Other mobile Olympics initiatives include NBC’s WAP site, the NBC Olympics 2Go mobile TV Channel on AT&T Wireless and Olympics content available on Verizon Wireless, Alltel, Helio, T-Mobile and MobiTV.
The second season of DIY Network‘s interactive home building series Blog Cabin breaks ground this week on Thursday, Aug. 14 at 9 pm. Online users chose an interlocking log cabin design for this year’s project. Log on to diynetwork.com to keep track of how the project is going (or register for a chance to win the home.)
Check out Mod 3 Productions‘ Mr 10% on blip.tv, the group’s first foray into made-for-the-web episodic TV. Like when Ari Gold was between offices on Entourage, old time talent agent Jay Bloomberg (played by Billy Riback) sets up shop in his local Coffee Bean to meet with clients. Co-creator Matthew Asner has recruited his dad Ed to guest star.
Michael Eisner’s latest production Foreign Body limped to a conclusion with its 50th and final episode. The high-budget serial, bankrolled by sponsor Honda and Penguin, the publisher of the Robin Cook novel it is based on, generated fewer than 10,000 views/episode despite extensive promotion on YouTube, Veoh and Borders.com.
The iPhone App Store is already starting to shake up the industry. T-Mobile plans to forgo its protected content deck in favor of an open source platform open to apps from third party developers, reports MocoNews. Developers will submit their applications online and a revenue-sharing agreement will be set up rewarding developers based on how much the application uses the network.
Another way to keep up on the Olympics remotely is by utilizing the free Orb application, which turns any broadband-connected device (PC laptop, mobile phone, PDA) into a streaming media player. (To watch live TV you need a TV tuner card built into your PC and you need to keep the computer running to maintain the stream.) The OrbLive tool will even port live streaming to an unlocked iPhone. Orb recommends ZiPhone for this seemingly straightforward process. (Disclaimer: Apple doesn’t support such hacks, meaning your warranty in null and void if you go down this road.)
For those who prefer to wait for a sanctioned method, the next version of the iPhone operating system may allow users to stream iTunes media directly from their PC, according to a recent patent filing sourced by AppleInsider.
Samsung unveiled a new smart phone in the U.S. called the Messager geared toward heavy text message users. A slide-out Qwerty keyboard makes for a nice texting interface.
In response to a Congressional inquiry into online privacy practices Yahoo is promoting a new single click “opt out” control allowing users to avoid receiving targeted customized ads across its portal. Yahoo’s privacy center contains a single link required to turn off cookie deployments for nearly every page on the network. The company also recently launched a PSA campaign to educate consumers on how online ads are served. According to Yahoo approximately 75,000 users visited the opt-out page during the month of July. FYI, Google‘s opt out link is here.
Digital advertising firm Get Interactive is powering a new feature on an outdoor-themed website for Comcast’s Versus network allowing users to shop and click on selected items featured in the site’s video programming. Click on selected gear marked with a “Get” spot, to launch a product panel providing a link to a point-of-purchase or other brand engagement.
Online ad rep firm Gorilla Nation has been selected to exclusively represent the online ad inventory for female-skewing Hallmark.com. Hallmark has traditionally sold only cross media marketing programs – offering online components to augment offline print sales efforts.
Almost 45% of U.S. mobile video users and 31% of U.K. mobile users will turn to their phones to follow the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, according to a new report from Nielsen Mobile. The top events that U.S. mobile users want to watch on their phones include gymnastics (61.7%), swimming & diving (58.5%) and track & field (54.5%). For U.K. users, track & field (89.9%), boxing (59.1%) and gymnastics (53.7%) were the most anticipated events.

You’re never too young to take advantage of web 2.0 advances. Non-profit Sesame Workshop unveils the newly enhanced sesamestreet.org today, retooled with tools from Adobe’s latest Flash suite to improve young users’ all-important initial experiences on the web. Based on 2 years of extensive research, the site is designed to provide a safe haven in which children and their parents can learn and experiment. The intuitive interface makes it simple to access hundreds of games, videos and activities. (Some 3,000 videos, including a link to Cookie Monster‘s recent appearance on The Colbert Report, are available now with plans to archive 10,000 segments by 2009.) A Muppet spokesperson acts as MC, introducing toddlers to a newly featured “playlist” each day built around a single learning theme or concept. “My Street” allows users to personalize their homepage, saving and sharing favorite games and activities. A “PlaySafe” feature can be toggled on and off to keep kids from straying from the site. The preschool set could be used to beta test many web properties – if a 5 year old can’t figure it out, then you’re doing something wrong. The new Sesame Street.org passes with flying colors.
